View Full Version : At what point is it overkill?

So I thought I was set on getting the ED A5-350, but I will have a small Paradigm Monitor v.5 speaker setup consisting of Atom Monitors, the CC-190, and ADP-190's. I think the speakers sound great, but they aren't exactly made to fill a huge room.

Would I do just as well going with an A3-300 (or something like the PB10 or VTF-1) to match with these speakers.

Basically is there a point where I would be driving the sub so lightly, because of the limitations of the speakers, that it wouldn't make sense to spend money on extra capability for the sub?

Of course there is such a point. However - until your room looks like this guys it is unlikely you have reached such a point. http://aamserver.dnsalias.com/basspig/

Just properly calibrate the levels and enjoy the additional headroom.

Bass pig is a good name for him, he needs to put a little bit more money into his TV.

How do you enjoy headroom? This may be a newbie type though, but I thought headroom was simply unused capacity. How can you enjoy something that you don't use. That was sort of my original thought in creating this thread. If I can never turn the A5-350 up past 1/4 gain without blowing the Atom Monitors out of the water, then wouldn't the A3-300 work just as well at 1/2 gain?

lol that room was hilarious. I love the no smoking sign.. I wonder how the walls stay up in that room... Damn that is an ugly system..

As far as the subwoofer, it really depends on what kind of person you are. If you are the kind of person who always wants something better than what you have, go for the a5-350.
I'm guessing you'd be perfectly happy with a smaller woofer/box though as none of the eD subs are weak.
It also really depends on how big is your room is.

Room isn't too big, but it opens up into other rooms because my condo is a loft layout. Living room is about 12x14, but that opens into a 20x10 kitchen and a 14x12 bedroom. Does extra space affect subs moreso than regular speakers?

Headroom is unused capacity...most of the time. The problem is that when you don't have sufficient headroom and you exceed what you have, bad things can happen. At best, the sub's limiters will kick in and cut dynamic range, or there will be distortion, or port noise. In those cases, the fidelity of the sound suffers during dynamic movie scenes or music passages. At worst, damage can occur to the sub. Basically, if you never exceed your headroom, your sound will be clean and powerful.

Think of it like having a very powerful car with lots of horsepower which most of the time you use very little of. Then you find yourself on a two lane road wanting to get around an 18-wheeler as quickly as possible. For those few seconds, you want all the power you can get. That's headroom.

It's kinda like a Corvette Z6. You don't use all its horsepower most of the time, but it is there when you need it (or want it) . Be aware the ¼ on the volume control does not mean you have 3 times more power. It all depends on the gain structure of the receiver or processor/amp combination. In other words you might find that going to ½ on your volume control will cause your amp to go into severe clipping.

Keep in mind, also, that headroom does not mean you don't use it, it means you don't use it MOST of the time.

Well I guess you convinced me that my initial thought was a good one. A5-350 here I come. I am sure that it will be absolutely monstrous once I receive it, both physically and in terms of output.

Basspig already got a new TV.
I'll have a similar subwoofer array in my 800cu ft room soon..

The definition of over kill is, when you have piss poor alignment that was lazily calibrated or rushed.
