View Full Version : New HD Calibration Disc From Joe Kane Productions Announced GeorgeAB 08-16-07, 11:44 PM http://www.cepro.com/article/hd_guru_joe_kane_releases_digital_video_essentials_hd_basics _the_ultimate_h/K3 Frank D 08-17-07, 12:50 AM Cool  From article: "For a limited time, registered owners of the HD DVD of DVE will be offered a special upgrade price on DVE HD Basics" Does anyone have a link to where current HD DVD DVE owners would register for this? GeorgeAB 08-17-07, 11:00 AM I checked both DVD International and Joe Kane Production's sites for any announcements pertaining to the new title. There's no trace of this topic. I'll be calling DVD Internatiional as a long time dealer of their products. As soon as I have more specifics, I'll post what I learn. Best regards and beautiful pictures, G. Alan Brown, President CinemaQuest, Inc. "Advancing the art and science of electronic imaging" Frank D 08-17-07, 11:21 AM The only thing that I found on his site is the same press release that can be accessed through a link near the top of his web page. http://www.jkpi.net/ docrings 08-20-07, 02:18 PM I don't know Joe Kane personally, but he owes me $25 for the pretty much useless calibration disc "DVE HD-DVD" which I just bought and attempted unsuccessfully to use for a sensor based calibration... The only reason I'm not returning it is that I should have done a little more research on what is NOT on the disc. That is my punishment for my un-researched enthusiasm which led to the disc's purchase. Things his current HD-DVD DVE lacks: IRE windows from 0, 10, 30, 50, 70, 90IRE (only 20, 40, 60, 80, 100IRE) Colored full-screen and/or windows for 75% and 100%: Red, Blue, Green, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow Flashing color and tint calibration boxes: easier to see and manage than some static bars. Dedicated BTB and WTW bars for setting contrast/brightness. But hey, if you want to compare about 30 different geometry and widescreen resolution options and old-fashioned CRT needle/voltage crap which require an oscilloscope... this disc is for you! But if you want practical calibration... hold on to your hard-earned money. If this is the stuff on their "Home" calibration disc... I will really hold my breath on this new HD BASICS disc. I'll hold off for something else in HD format...while this one collects dust. I have no hope for their "Basic" HD format... if the first HD-DVE is any indication. The press release could have at least discussed what the calibration screens are in a little more detail. I'm *not* willing to upgrade for any price if they don't say EXACTLY what is on the disc... you can fool me once, but NOT twice!! M2CW, Doc  PS: Who is David Goodman and how many people agree with this statement???: "Joe Kane is the foremost high definition calibration expert in the world, and his Digital Video Essentials (DVE) is the best home theater calibration tool available." Put me in the *NOT* category on this one. Frank D 08-20-07, 06:46 PM Things his current HD-DVD DVE lacks: IRE windows from 0, 10, 30, 50, 70, 90IRE (only 20, 40, 60, 80, 100IRE) Colored full-screen and/or windows for 75% and 100%: Red, Blue, Green, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow Flashing color and tint calibration boxes: easier to see and manage than some static bars. Dedicated BTB and WTW bars for setting contrast/brightness. Although it is not 1080p you can still get most (maybe all?) of what you ask for on the same side as the 1080p. Just choose the 720p option (near the bottom after the 1920x1080p choice) instead and go back into the SAME menus. The player will upconvert the patterns to 1080p. I would have preferred all thouse pattersn in 1080p but I guess Joe figured that most people had projectors at 720p. David Abrams 08-20-07, 07:04 PM Frank D, You are correct, Joe had put a lot of the patterns that did not to need to be native 1920x1080 on the disc at 720p so that he could conserve space. These patterns are legitimate and can be upconverted by the player without fault. Best, Dave Michael TLV 08-20-07, 07:27 PM Greetings I find the disc just fine. Used the DVE HD in many HD DVD set ups. Gives me all the patterns I need ... and plenty that I don't need. Now looking forward to the Blu versions ... Regards GeorgeAB 08-20-07, 10:24 PM Some people see the glass 10% empty:mad:, while others see it 90% full:). I'm grateful for a low cost tool that allows me to calibrate a system to the HD DVD player in use. It's particularly noteworthy that the DVE HD DVD combo disc is still the only commercially available test pattern suite offered in either HD disc format. Unless of course, docrings, you have one you have produced and are willing to sell it to us. I'm sure it would have every test pattern every calibrator could wish to have on it, and for an even lower price maybe. |
