View Full Version : Late to the party?
mpkelley20 08-17-07, 08:02 AM I am a new member of the DVD-A and SACD fan club and have recently discovered that it is very difficult to find the discs I want at a reasonable price. I've been reading a lot on this forum about how these formats are really not supported by the record companies anymore as they are switching to other formats such as MVI.
But is my comparisons of DVD-A and SACD compared to MVI surround sound and other formats such as DTS, I noticed that nothing compares to the sound of the DVD-A and SACD.
I currently have Dark Side of the Moon on SACD and the Beatles Love on DVD-A. I also have a couple of DTS recordings (Wish you were Here, Animals and The Wall) as well as Rush's new release, Snakes and Arrows, in MVI format.
I've been looking for some specific discs:
Yes - Fragile
and
Yes - Magnification
It appears that these are now out of print and can only be found for about $40 a piece. Is this standard for DVD-A and SACD's to be priced so high compare to standard Cd's?
If not, where is a good place to find older DVD-A's at a decent price? Did I completely miss the boat by just doscovering these formats recently?
tlqualman 08-17-07, 09:49 AM Hi, your not the only one to complain about the cost of the HiRez discs. I buy almost all of mine online. Here is a list of several places I get mine from.
www.amazon.com ( you run a search for sacd or dvd audio discs)
www.acousticsounds.com
www.aixrecords.com (if you order be sure to ask for their free sampler, great disc)
good luck in your hunt, there are some fantastic sounding discs out there.
sivadselim 08-18-07, 05:08 PM Unfortunately, yes, you are a bit late to the party; a party that never really got too rowdy.
I'm so glad a scarfed up as many hirez discs as I could when I first bought my universal player.
vitaminc 08-18-07, 05:39 PM ArkivMusic.com for classical CD selections. That is if you are interested at all.
impetigo 08-18-07, 05:50 PM Circuitcity.com also is a great place to buy SACDs. They have >800 SACDs and most single discds are $14, and currently with free shipping (albeit, with tax as well for most ppl). No classical ones though unfortunately.
hotguy8289 08-18-07, 10:36 PM My choice for hard to find stuff is http://gemm.com/
Welcome to the club! Better late than never. :) Good luck with the search.
I've purchased a few Depeche Mode Sacd's at Cdwow.com for some great price...
Grab a beer, and have some cake! The party is still going.....

sivadselim 08-19-07, 01:29 AM Acoustic Sounds (http://store.acousticsounds.com/) was already mentioned.
Elusive Disc (http://www.elusivedisc.com/)
CD Universe (http://www.cduniverse.com/)
mpkelley20 08-20-07, 08:42 AM Thanks for the websites! There are a lot more discs out there than I thought so I should be kept busy for a while!
onejake 08-30-07, 02:10 PM I'm late to the party! Or, at least this thread.
Circuit City was a good suggestion. Best Buy, believe it or not, still has many SACD/DTD/DVD-A discs mixed within the music at their stores. While they used to have a entirely separate section, hunting for the music now is frustrating and rewarding at the same time.
You also might want to consider Djangos (dot com), it used to be mobydisc. It has many obscure titles and a decent selection of 5.1 titles.
Terminator840 09-10-07, 10:57 PM I am late to the party too, just recently bought a BD player that supports DVD-A. I picked up my first title at Best Buy over the weekend, The Beatles Love, and do I love it, sounds awesome. The bad part is now all my CDs that I love listening to will never be the same.
Question: Are there any soundtracks available in the DVD-A format. I know of the special Lord of the Rings set, but any others?
