View Full Version : KOTOR still worth playing? lynesjc 08-17-07, 03:48 PM Never got around to it and I like SW and RPG's. Or should I just wait for Mass Effect? jrogacki 08-17-07, 03:53 PM Yes Some pretty good plot twists, bc with xbox 360, and pretty damned fun having force powers. Union0015 08-17-07, 04:10 PM Never got around to it and I like SW and RPG's. Or should I just wait for Mass Effect? It's an awesome game and well worth playing on 360. There are quite a bit of framerate hiccups on the 360 version, mostly battles, but it doesn't detract from the game too much. It battles with a lot of enemies, the game will slow down to 3-5 frames per second. Ugh. modiGTI 08-17-07, 04:11 PM Yes, play it. It's one of those games you shouldn't miss out on. I'd go with the Dark Side just cus it's more entertaining. I think after playing this game, you'll see why everyone is so hyped about Mass Effect also. jrogacki 08-17-07, 04:14 PM modiGTI is right...the dark side is fanastic. You can team up with a foul mouthed Futurama Bender kinda robot! Thrillhouse17 08-17-07, 04:16 PM Hell yes. Totally worth playing. One of the best Star Wars games, and RPGs ever. Shao 08-17-07, 04:17 PM Very much worth it. PatrickB101 08-17-07, 04:25 PM original is one of the best games ever. fjtorres 08-17-07, 04:39 PM Abso-positively. Ditto for Jade Empire. Think of it as Mass Effect training... Me, I'd recommend the light side. Just be careful with those thermal detonators... marms1 08-17-07, 05:01 PM modiGTI is right...the dark side is fanastic. You can team up with a foul mouthed Futurama Bender kinda robot! Indeed, HK-47 owns the meatbags. TonyDP 08-17-07, 05:59 PM The original KOTOR garnered numerous accolades including its fair share of Game of the Year awards. It's a very deep game with multiple endings and a ton of different ways to play and customize your jedi/sith characters (costumes, weapons, force abilities, etc). It does not run in widescreen and its graphics do look dated by today's standards but it's a lot of fun and definitely a worthy edition to any Xbox / 360 collection. elvisizer 08-17-07, 06:01 PM damn, beaten to the meatbag comment. damn! kotor rules. i've played it on xbox, pc, and even os x, though aspyr's mac port is seriously buggy on intelmacs. the pc version is my favorite- better framerate than xbox, higher res, too. lynesjc 08-17-07, 06:11 PM It does not run in widescreen According to this link: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/s/starwarsknightsofoldrepublic/default.htm it's HDTV 480p, I took that to imply it did run WS, is this not the case? LiamSevier 08-17-07, 06:19 PM Absolutely worth while. However, if you're playing on a 360, you're quite likely to encounter glitches. For example, many people find that as they are playing the Tatooine portion of the game, once you leave a certain building, the game will halt. Background noise is still audible, but you cannot move your character. You cannot even call for the shut down screen, and you are forced into a hard reboot. This is a known issue and has not been resolved as of yet (documented quite a few times on Bioware's forums). Both it and it's sequel are great games with rather long play. 257Tony 08-17-07, 06:31 PM Statement: Kill all meatbags!! lol This is one of my all time favorite games, my jaw is still on the floor from the plot twist :) Dioneo 08-17-07, 06:51 PM I played it for the first time not that long ago on my 360 - the emulation isn't perfect. As someone else mentioned there are framerate problems during battles and audio glitches throughout the game. That being said, it is one of the best RPGs I have played on any system. Bioware did a far better job of capturing the spirit of the SW mythos than Lucas did in episodes 1-3. It does not run in widescreen. TonyDP 08-17-07, 08:46 PM According to this link: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/s/starwarsknightsofoldrepublic/default.htm it's HDTV 480p, I took that to imply it did run WS, is this not the case? Unfortunately, a lot of original Xbox games supported 480p but were only 4:3; KOTOR falls into this category. I discovered as much when I bought a widescreen plasma a few years ago and re-tried all my games to see how they looked. If your TV allows it, you can stretch the image to 16:9, but I found that made the characters look oddly proportioned. vancouver 08-17-07, 09:35 PM original is one of the best games ever. +1 sbarrier 08-18-07, 10:06 PM Fantastic game. One of the best ever in my opinion. I was replaying it on my 360 recently. Unfortunately, the 360 just bit the dust. Hedonist 08-21-07, 05:47 PM Best thing about going dark side...Force Lightening. Don't really even need a lightsaber... KOTOR and KOTOR II were both good games. The Force Crush is an awesome dark side power! Edit: actually the best part was recruiting my own sith apprentice!! formulanerd 08-21-07, 07:44 PM never really cared for star wars, but i LOVED KOTOR uzziah 08-21-07, 08:17 PM my fav game ever i actually rented it first, played for 10 minutes, thought it was terrible and overly complicated, and returned it but since it got such great scores i thought i'd give it another shot; after i got over the initial shock of all the strange stats and what-not, i realized it was rather simple, and to this day it's still my #1 game as far as star wars is concerned it keeps the good and let's the bad go: no crappy acting, no HORRIBLE script and dialogue, just lightsabers, the force, good VS evil, and a great story uzziah 08-21-07, 08:18 PM Yes Some pretty good plot twists, bc with xbox 360, and pretty damned fun having force powers. darkside consular FTW HangEmHi 08-21-07, 08:19 PM KOTOR is hawt! woot! ;) uzziah 08-21-07, 08:21 PM damn, beaten to the meatbag comment. damn! kotor rules. i've played it on xbox, pc, and even os x, though aspyr's mac port is seriously buggy on intelmacs. the pc version is my favorite- better framerate than xbox, higher res, too. yes, truly the PC rules; my modest rig runs it perfectly on sxga+, and lots of excellent mods including turning your buddies into jedi and too many others; i guess you don't get any 720p rendering on the 360, that's too bad; also on the pc load times were 100x faster than the ybox uzziah 08-21-07, 08:22 PM Statement: Kill all meatbags!! lol This is one of my all time favorite games, my jaw is still on the floor from the plot twist :) oh yes and the last statement: DON'T READ ANY MORE REVIEWS! YOU DON'T WANT TO HAVE THE PLOT GIVEN AWAY!!! NO NO NO NO uzziah 08-21-07, 08:26 PM sith lords is difficult to rate; on the one hand they fixed all the quirks with kotor; now you can switch weapons faster, more force powers, run faster in spacesuits, see if boxes are empty or not, some very good improvements, but it missed the mark when it comes to the engrossment of the game overall; the story is interesting but very convoluted and jumpy, the ending is terribly dissapointing, and something is just "off". i still have yet to find anyone who can really explain why The Sith Lords is "off" but it is. still worth your time, but the original is THE ONE TonyDP 08-22-07, 08:21 AM sith lords is difficult to rate; on the one hand they fixed all the quirks with kotor; now you can switch weapons faster, more force powers, run faster in spacesuits, see if boxes are empty or not, some very good improvements, but it missed the mark when it comes to the engrossment of the game overall; the story is interesting but very convoluted and jumpy, the ending is terribly dissapointing, and something is just "off". i still have yet to find anyone who can really explain why The Sith Lords is "off" but it is. still worth your time, but the original is THE ONE I'm pretty sure Sith Lords was rushed so that it could be released for the holidays, thus the feeling that it is "off" or somehow incomplete. It was a fun game but the ending was beyond poor - there was no real payoff and most of the characters situations were just left hanging. The developers clearly ran out of time. It also left things open for a sequel which, despite strong sales, never materialized. I wonder if they'll ever announce a KOTOR III for the 360 or some other console. HeadRusch 08-22-07, 11:55 AM KOTOR is the only RPG I've played in 20 years that I actually stayed with.....although I dont think I ever finished the game................but I still have my xbox and my KOTOR disc...maybe if I break my leg, or when my 360 goes belly up for the next time :D memnoch2 08-22-07, 02:59 PM to the KOTOR players here, i'm curious to know if you battle in real-time or turn-based? i totally dig turn-based games even going back to the D&D RPG in PC's from the early 90's... my response time is not too good and i hate it when i throw a grenade blowing myself up as well but really meaning to press another button -- a heat-of-the-moment kinda thing... with turn-based, i get to think and strategize which is more rewarding than running-and-gunning. although i admit that after reaching the higher levels (at least in KOTOR2), i can easily kill enemies in as little as 1-2 turns, which gets boring. i'm hoping that all RPG games at least follow KOTOR in providing real-time or turn-based as options. i've demoed Eternal Sonata and they have a pretty interesting turn-based system. i'm looking to try Blue Dragon as well... nabwong 08-22-07, 03:43 PM Kotor's story is probably the best of any RPG i've played. Sith Lords' ending is lame although everything before that is awesome. Jade Empire is also very good. I hope Mass Effect is at least as good as Kotor. mpalmieri1203 08-22-07, 03:57 PM This game is fantastic. It was a little frustrating at the end if I can remember. The difficulty went from challenging to 500 storm troopers in yo face sucka. I wasn't a fan of the 2nd one and didn't play the whole way through. Jade Empire was also an awesome game but I beat that one really really really fast. And it usually takes me awhile even to beat the shortest games. HeadRusch 08-22-07, 07:05 PM Its turn based with a timer I believe....but the cool thing is you can queue up moves so you aren't always scrambling among your players to figure out what to do. You can queue up force-pull, saber heavy attack, force-push....and then each successive turn your character will let loose without your interaction (unless you want to). vertigo235 08-22-07, 07:26 PM I loved the first one and enjoyed the second one. Dont' know if I ever finished the second one though, but that's only because it is so long and thats not a bad thing. SMac770 08-22-07, 10:31 PM HK-47 and that robot in Timesplitters FP after the personality change are most highly entertaining. KOTOR II didn't have that same "holy crap, no way" plot twist, and I never even got around to finishing it; just dragged on and on. KOTOR is definitely one of those games you have to have played through at least once in your gaming career. WilliamR 08-23-07, 10:13 AM Some of the best games ever. I recommend playing 1 first, even though it has some issues, because part 2 fixes about everything you wish where fixed while playing 1 so if you play 2 without doing 1 first you will probably be more dissapointed. HK-47, best freaking NPC in the history of games. Unbelievably funny. alucard_x 08-23-07, 11:47 AM Never got around to it and I like SW and RPG's. Or should I just wait for Mass Effect? absolutely, great game, and that much better if you like the starwars universe. |
