View Full Version : Muddy Waters & Miles Davis... Opinions on These Discs?
I've been eyeing the Muddy Waters 'Folk Singer' HDAD disc (I have the CD), but I haven't heard much about it here on this forum... Does anyone around here own it and what do you think of the sound quality? It's my understanding that it's a 192KHz disc, so that can't hurt at all.
Also, pretty much everyone owns a Miles Davis 'Kind of Blue' CD... I have a love/hate relationship with mine, as I love the music, but hate the quality of the disc. Is the SACD a whole other story?

www.sa-cd.net is probably more responsive to your question than this forum.
sivadselim 08-18-07, 09:56 PM I know nothing about the Muddy Waters disc. Being a HDAD, it is, of course, stereo only, if that bothers you.
Which "Kind of Blue" version do you have on CD? Remastered? To me, the remastered discs are a considerable imrovement over the older CD. The remastered versions were also mastered at the correct speeds; the first CD was mastered at a slightly incorrect speed. I think my KoB SACD sounds great. It's not a hybrd CD; SACD only. It does have a multichannel track that is very tastefully done, adding only a little bit of ambiance.
I really like the Miles Davis multi channel, don't know about the Muddy Waters (the Mo Fi sounds fantastic to me).
sivadselim, I'm completely okay with 2-channel, as my main goal is to get a quality recording. You hit the nail on the head, when you mentioned multichannel that's tastefully done.
As far as KoB, I don't have the remastered CD and I feel like it's quite apparent, which is why I'm looking to get the SACD. Since it seems like anything would be better than what I have now, it sounds like a no-brainer for Miles Davis. Thanks for the input, btw, Bill. I'm certainly not against multichannel for this kind of music, but I like to know that they do it justice and it sounds like you and sivadselim are happy with it.
Hopefully I get someone that actually owns the Muddy Waters disc, to come out of the woodwork and let me know what they think.

It can usually be had for $10 or less.
Process53 08-19-07, 01:18 PM I got the sacd of KoB about a month ago. This is a 5.0 with the rears acting as strictly ambient channels. The front left, center, and front right are used to reproduce the original 3-track recording. The sense of surround is not present but the fidelity is so good that it's easy to sit back and enjoy this masterpiece.

You can hear Adderly's and Coltrane's embouchures perfectly. The piano and rhythm sections are equally clear.
WestCoastD 08-19-07, 05:40 PM The "Kind Of Blue" SACD is definitely one of the best re-masters, especially for it's age of original recording.
jeffrey r 08-19-07, 08:47 PM Guste, the KOB SACD is great. Certainly a must-own. Good sonics, nice mix, and obviously great music.
The Muddy Waters Folk Singer HDAD is stunning. Truly one of the best hi-rez titles out there. There's also an SACD of Folk Singer, but the HDAD is pretty much universally preferred from what I have read. I only own the HDAD, but if you have DVD-A capabilities, do try to track this one down. It is literally like Muddy is playing in the room with you.
The_Nephilim1 08-19-07, 09:02 PM Hi Jeffrey R, Is that DVD-A of Muddy in Multichannel??
Just wanted to add my .02 Cents that the Kind of Blue SACD is Not bad considering the year it was made!!
Hi all, thanks for the comments. I did end up picking up KoB in SACD. I actually found it for $10, at an out of the way record shop here in Toronto. I'm pretty sure that the Muddy Waters disc doesn't exist for sale anywhere up here, so I'll have to pick it up from Amazon, or eBay. In the meantime, I'll just enjoy the CD (thanks for the helpful opinion, Jeffrey).
Slightly off-topic, I did also happen to pick up the Beck 'Sea Change' DVD-A and I'm excited about that one, as I already liked that album in stereo.
Anyway, thanks again for all the feedback and happy listening!

Not multichannel, just 2-channel. All of the Classic Records HDAD and DAD titles are 2-channel, but do not let that deter you at all. Their collection is outstanding. I have many of the HDAD and DAD titles, ranging from Muddy Waters, to Alan Parsons, to Cannonball Adderley, to Glory soundtrack...They're all good. The Coltrane 'Blue Train' HDAD and Adderley 'Somethin Else' HDAD are great.
Here are the various titles, some being hard to find at this point:

Feirstein 08-20-07, 11:53 AM Kind of Blue was recorded was recorded in three channels and Sony gives you back those three channels on the SACD with a touch of add on ambient type sound in the rear. I love this recording.

I got to listen to the KoB SACD early this morning and it was so wonderful. I was grinning from ear to ear :)
Jeffrey, I just made that purchase of Muddy's disc, off of eBay and I made a blind buy of the 'Somethin Else' HDAD as well. If this thread is still going, I'll let you know how I like that one, when it gets here.

jayna_95 08-20-07, 12:43 PM I've got both Folk Singer and Somethin' Else and agree that they are stunning. Especially the spacing of the instruments (and voice in Muddy's case). Even though both are 2-channel, they almost feel like multi-channel because the soundstage is so wide.
jeffrey r 08-20-07, 01:14 PM Great to hear guste. With your recent purchases, you've picked up two of the best jazz albums of all time, and a sweet blues recording, all in glorious hi-rez. You did good. For anyone else interested, the HDAD's are available at cduniverse.

Mind sharing the name of the shop?
Jeffrey, :D
udp, the name of the place was Vortex Records, at Yonge and Eglinton. You'll need to be local though, as I don't think they do e-commerce. Also, even going in in person, you'll have to have an hour or two on your hands, as the guy who owns it seems to be a bit dazed and confused. He told me that they have "a few hi-res discs around", but they're unmarked. Translation: good luck finding them, if I don't know what you're looking for. Luckily, I found KoB immidiately (it was the only one) and I just couldn't bear to stay any longer, as the name 'Vortex' seems to be no accident.
I think if I head back there, it will be armed with a list, so I can just do a quick search and hopefully find something.
Also, if you're in the Toronto area, the HMV at 333 Yonge has a decent selection of classical titles, and a very very sad collection of jazz and blues titles.
doubleroll 08-20-07, 05:11 PM Miles KoB is one of my favorite sacd's.
drziggles 08-21-07, 09:25 AM I'll second whoever said that the remastered KoB CD sounds quite impressive. I haven't heard the SACD, but the CD sounds as good as any modern recording, with a lot of warmth...
aggieheels 08-21-07, 01:27 PM Muddy Waters' Folk Singer is one of the best sounding discs I have ever heard anywhere. I own over 150 high resolution recordings and would put this one in the top 10%.
The other HDAD's are variable with selections from Alan Parsons sounding good, but not blowing me away. I agree Somethin' Else is also a greeat sounding disc on that label. I would recommend getting af few of these. I believe they are out of print.
The jazz discs sound quite good. I have discs also from Hank Mobley and Kenny Drew.
