Hi folks. Many companies now advertises 1080p. I'm having a hard time deciding which projector to get. How much will I be missing if I buy a crt projector that does not support 1080p, only 1080i? And also, my htpc is connected to my RPTV CRT HDTV. Resolution is 1080i. I have downloaded some few 1080p trailers from apple.com. When I play them on my htpc, it is gorgeous. Since I don't have a 1080p set, I don't know if the picture quality will change.

Since I'm happy playing 1080p content even on a 1080i capable HDTV set on my htpc, I'm thinking that if I buy a CRT projector that is 1080i capable, the picture quality would be the same.

My target is 10 ft wide screen. Can a max 1080i CRT projector be able to produce an oustanding picture quality?

If you are happy with 1080i on the RPTV then you will be beside yourself watching a CRT projector displaying 1080i.

Using a projector that can display 1080p (ones with 9' CRT's) you will turn to yourself and say  !

Right now i use a Marqee 8000 with some newer boards and run my LG BH 100 multi player to a lumagen scaler at 1080p48 and it looks awsome . * inch PJ's are very affordable right now and you'll love this hobby once you get one. I just got into crt FP in october last year and now have 3 Marquee's one is for parts and all 3 were less than 3,000 combined. And i run this onto a 12 foot dalite 1.2 gain screen. Soon a stack or blend is in the works.

Marqueue 8000 on 1080p? Are my eyes correct? I remember that even Marqueue 8500 cannot do 1080p. However, I saw a thread last week where someone had his 8500 at 1080p. I think it due to MP's modification.

I'm so interested how you were able to do 1080p on your 8000. You said, newer boards. If I go with 8000 or 8500, how can I be sure that it will have a newer board? Or do we purchase these newer boards from someone? How much do they cost?

That means, I should save more.

Thanks! :)

If you are primarily referring to viewing scope movie content you don't have to run 1080P to get the same picture. 1920*800 48 or 72 should run on any 8 " PJ in good shape. There are a handful of resolutions and timings that would give you the same effect as 1080P you just will not have to resolve the 16:9 black bars. Others in the forum can explain it better than I or you can search other threads already present.

I think, that's where I am confused. It's because on my linux htpc, I manually modify the xorg.conf so that the GUI part of it will display at 1920x1080. Then I just hook my machine directly to my RPTV and start watching. I don't know if in a CRT projector, we also have to make or configure resolutions. Do we have to set up a mode in the crt projector to match what we have configured on our device? Let say, I configured my linux box to output 1920x1080 at 72hz, do we also set up the crt with the same values?

Also, are 5,000 hours tubes bad? How many hours of viewing left if it already have 5000 hours? What is the ideal or acceptable price for Marqueue 8000 or 8500 this days?

EDIT: He is using Marqueue 8000 and he is using 12 ft screen. Wouldn't the brightness suffer and picture quality? From what I remember, 8 inchers are not ideal when projecting a movie that is greater than 10 ft wide(not diagonal).

10' wide is too wide even for 9" such as G90 if you ask me.
1080i at 72hz should be a good alternative to 1080p.
But if you want 1080p in full rez, you should get a nice 9" with nice tubes and have it dialed in by someone who knows what he is doing. It is all about the hardware.
I run 1080i on my XG1352 and looks very nice. 1080i is what you get off the air and cable/sat and no need for processor.

Well it doesnt fully resolve 1080p where you will see clear defined lines under the lumagen test pattern but they are definatly decernable as individual lines just not crisp and clear but in the displayed image it still looks great to me, better than when i tried 1080i but evry one has there own idea of what looks good to them. the first things i changed were the vnb;s and the Vim with ones that have the the higher bandwith cl449 chips on them. I was using this with my LG player component outs to the lumagen scaler with it outputting 1080p the pics was a bit soft but i liked it compared to my old LCD sony i had. Then i had it professionally calibrated by Craig Rounds and the colors and overall image improved alot. then for the biggest improvmnet with out spending alot on the MP mods was the moome hdmi card . This card really really is a great product. the scan lines on the lumagen test patterns got tighter and the colors also seem to improve, even though now i should redo grey scale. And remeber all this on a 12 foot screen. I'll try to take some pics tonight and post for you. i was playing around with different refresh rates and went from 48 to 72 but this is too much for the unmodded vim in the marquee. so i'll reconverg it to 48hz where it is more cris but has slight judder with film sources. But for tru 1080p fully resolved on and 8 inch pj you will deffinatly need the Mike Parker modded boards.
If i were you try to find an 8500 and get the moome card. Then maybe save for the mp mods or go with HD144/145 lenses with the joust adapter plates for a sharper image. Then see if this is enough if not go all out for the MP mods! if you get into crt i'm sure before long you will find out like alot of us here it becomes an addiction, you just want to keep going. I have only been into crt for 9 months now and cant see myself going back to digital any time soon.

I am aware about the addiction :D. I like it too but am afraid of the costs like those mods you've just mentioned. Maybe, I will do it slowly. This way, I don't waste all my money. :D

About Marqueue 8500, this was recommended to me last year. However, I didn't have a chance to buy one because I bought a new house. So going back in my earlier post, how much should I be paying if getting an 8500 without modifications? How much are those moome cards? MP mods? and the lenses? This way, I have an idea and I will reference in the future.

Thanks again!
