View Full Version : Do I need anything special for calibrating my Sanyo PLV-Z5 front-projector?

I just rented the Digital Video Essentials HD-DVD from Blockbuster and because there are _zero_ instructions on the DVD I am completely lost.

The Calibration FAQ in this forum seems to talk about using the AVIA disc and doesn't seem to mention anything about DVE or front-projectors.

Should I still follow the calibration FAQ with my front-projector?

What about the black bars test? Is that only for CRT televisions?

Here is link to a tutorial: http://www.avical.com/articles/avicals_dve_user-level_video_calibration_tutorial.html

I would say read as much as you can - there is a lot to learn

sofakng,

The projector that you own has both a user menu and a factory menu, it may even work with the uniformity software that Sanyo makes for their projectors. That said, it can get quite intense in achieving the best possible image.

A good starting point would be as angryht suggested, read through our tutorial, and also look through the user manual as it will help describe which adjustments affect with particular signal characteristic.

If you are referring to the PLUGE pattern when you describe "black bar tests", these are relevant in all types of display technology.

Good Pictures!

Thanks for all of this information!

Is there anything in the tutorial that is not applicable to LCD projectors? (eg. my Sanyo PLV-Z5)

...or should I just follow everything exactly as it says?

Just remember that yours is a fixed pixel device and that there is a difference in the approach between fixed pixel displays and CRT devices. David's tutorial looks like it does a great job explaining the different approaches. Like this:
Those with CRT displays should adjust the brightness control and set it to where the 4% below black strip has disappeared while the 4% above strips are still viewable using T.12/CH2 & CH3.

On an LCD, D-ILA, and DLP display, this process is slightly different in that many of these do not have gamma curves similar to a CRT which cause the below/above black strips to appear/disappear. For these displays, it is necessary to look for where black is being "crushed" or lost. If one stands close to the screen and raises the brightness, they will notice that there is some "noise" in the black background. Conversely, as the brightness is brought back down, the noise eventually goes away.

Those with digital displays should adjust the brightness control until they can clearly see the noise in the background, and then lower it gradually until the noise disappears but where the 2 and 4% above black strips are still visible.

Thanks for all of the help!

Since my Sanyo PLV-Z5 is an LCD projector, do I want to follow the instructions exactly the same as if I had a regular LCD television?

This stuff is extremely complicated. I can see why ISF calibration is so expensive...
