View Full Version : Best DVD Recorder for that is affordable?
Captain Crunch28 08-19-07, 02:55 AM I'm looking into buying a dvd recorder at my local walmart sometime this week and I was wondering what is the best brand to get that is not too expensive?
I was looking their yesterday and I seen a pretty nice Phillips DVD Recorder.. For those who own, or have owned a Phillips DVD Recorder, what is your opinion on it?
Thanks

If you're talking about the Philips DVDR3575, I love both of mine. I also have a Pioneer DVR-640. (There's also a Philips DVDR3455 at Wal-Mart...don't know anything about that one.)
The 3575 is a good, basic recorder with all the features most people need to record from TV, make high-quality DVDs, transfer home videos to DVD, etc. The Philips customer service is excellent, and you can get a 2-yr extended warranty from Wal-Mart for less than $18 (3 yrs total), and if you don't like it, it's easy to return to Wal-Mart. (You don't have to buy the extended warranty at time of purchase...we bought ours about a week after.)
I highly recommend the 3575.
Hi.
Would you say that the recording quality of the Philips at SP mode matches up to that of the Pioneer? Or, is one of these better than the other at XP and SP?
Thanks for your help!!:)

I can't see any difference between my Philips 3575 and Pio 640 at XP/HQ and SP rec. modes.
I tested my Philips at ALL rec. modes using an excellent source, "Heartland" on TNT digital HD, and dubbing to DVDs at High speed (HS). At the longest-mode, 6-hr SLP, I could only see some diff. in a small operating room display panel that had a small "POWER" button and text... had to search many times to find that item and notice any diff. Faces and movement all excellent!
On my wife's 8mm cruise tape, which we had copied to VHS then to the Philips HDD and finally to a HS-dubbed DVD, I noticed some edge degradation in the DVD at the 3-hr LP mode...but this source was very bad, shaky, etc. My wife said the LP DVD was good enough for her. Saw no diff. at XP/HQ or SP modes... in fact, slightly enhanced quality.

He may have seen the 3505. That's more readily available and about $120 cheaper without the hard drive. At the local Wally, they mix those two units together. In fact, the 3575 is displayed above the the 3505 tag and vice versa.
I have the 3575 as well, and while it has a couple of bugs, I would still endorse it.

I have read elsewhere that the Philips range produce grain in their recordings, so it's nice to hear from someone who can compare it favourably to the Pioneer, as I have the 440HX and am very happy with the recording PQ. Now I'm thinking about the Philips.................:D
What do you think of Panasonic DVD recorders? The video "experts" in my family say
it has the best picture?
westgate 08-20-07, 02:20 PM go with the pan es15. excellent for $.
kentuck1163 08-24-07, 04:20 PM I just got a Samsung DVD-R155 and I think its a super value. Got it off Ebay for $50.00. Can't beat that - and includes dual-layer recording capability. Of course, it does not have a built-in tuner, though. I have gotten about a year of service from a Samsung DVD-R135 and it performed well.
