R6 Vegas, Crackdown, Lost Planet... All fun games. I'm an old skool FPS/PC gamer and find R6 Vegas to be great.

I'm a FPS guy, If you like cover-based shooters like Gears, pick up either Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare or GRAW 2.

If you like realistic shooters (one hit and you're worm food) look at Rainbow 6: Vegas.

If you like run-and-gun shooters, pick up Halo and Halo 2. Play the bejeezus out of them before 9/25 and then run - don't walk - to pick up Halo 3.

If you like smacking zombies with park benches, knocking them silly with potted plants or making a zombified mess with a chainsaw, look at Dead Rising.

If you're on Live, start downloading some demos to see what you'll like. I was psyched about Bioshock but the demo bored me. Looked AWESOME at 110", but I guess I'm bored with the "walk down the hallway and wait for something to jump out at me" games. But MAN did it look pretty!!!

Tons of sweet stuff coming out to spend your hard-earned pennies on in the next few months too. I'm anxious for (besides Halo3) Mercenaries 2, Ace Combat 6 and Call of Duty 4. Too Human and Mass Effect are a couple of other hot names coming down the pipe.

Nose around over at (IGN's 360 site (http://xbox360.ign.com) to get a feel for what's come out so far and what's coming down the pipe.

Check out this site : http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/simpleratings.asp
and buy the top 15 games, all are AAA titles.

Plus the upcomming games in the next 2-3 months are Halo3, Mass Effect and Bioshock. Some people may add Assassins Creed, and CoD4 to that list as well.

I loved Halo2 although wouldn't recommend it since Halo3 is out in a month. I would recommend Lost Planet though. A great game--to me, better looking than gears and a lot better online multiplayer as well.

It all depends on what you like. BTW, LP is $40 at wally world now. It has sold well over a million copies and for good reason.

definately bioshock.

imo, other must have games for an action FPS fan is:

all 3 COD's!! including COD4, that's going to be insane. some people didn't liek COD3, but imo, it was fantastic. frenetic, cinematic, large scale battles.

Rainbow 6 imo, is a must own. Absolutely brilliant gameplay, wicked firefights. I liked R6 more than GEARS

also, definately pick up Forza. brilliant game, and it's not just a sim. I always thought i'm the PGR3 and PGR4 type, but imo, Forza did casual arcade racing better than PGR! that said, PGR3 is a great game and it's budget priced

the only other game i would definately check out is Dead Rising. I was put off by this game untill i played it. As it turns out, it's a hilarious, engrossing, original game. The story actually sucks you in, and it has lots of good satire.

also, Assasin's Creed is going to be great as well. as will Half Life ORange Box.

I guess i would recommend R6 highest of the "classic" x360 games.

oh yeah, Oblivion. That's one of the best games i've ever played actually. someone mentioned Lost Planet, i'm a huge FPS fan, but imo, Lost Planet is only average. worth a play, but not worth $60

I'ld recommend Rainbow 6:LV, GRAW, GRAW2, CoD2, CoD3. It's hard to narrow down. There have been so many good releases and more to come in the next few months, I hope you have plenty of time.

I'ld even recommend a nice marathon of Halo-Halo2-Halo3 to coincide with the release of 3. Excellent series, one you should definitely check out!

Too many good games to list all. But some of my favorites are Gears Of War, Rainbow 6 Vegas, Lost Planet, Oblivion, Shadowrun, GRAW2, Command and Concquer 3, Saints Row, NBA 2k7....and many more. Plus Bioshock should be a great game, not to mention Two Worlds (although I'll wait for reviews on Two Worlds before buying it).

COD2
Oblivion
Rainbow six
Both GRAWs
Lost Planet

Condemned for and to hand and some suvivor horror (plus you can get it cheap)
The Darkness is good and creepy too

Kameo if you like platformers.
Overlord is just a fun game much like pikmen if you liked that one on nintendo.

Forza is good
PGR3 (graphics not the best but its a good game and cheap)

Crackdown is a fun sandbox game.

Try the demo for all these games before deciding as not every game is for every person.

If I had to rank the best values of all the games I've played I think they would have to be:

1. Oblivion
2. Rainbow Six: Vegas
3. Call of Duty 2
4. Dead Rising
5. PGR3
6. Lumines Live
7. Marvel Ultimate Alliance
8. DiRT
9. Amped 3

Although you might as well go ahead and get Oblivion for PS3, since it has a few improvements over the 360 version.

Thank you, someone else who feels the same way I do. Sure, I'll probably sucker myself into picking it up at some point for the eye candy (it looks awesome at 100" as well ;)), but it really didn't feel any better than a crappy interactive horror flick.

Forza 2 is a joke unless you want to pretend like you're driving a car. I'm assuming you're old enough to get behind the wheel of a car and use it, so why buy a racing game when you can drive anyway?

Don't listen to anyone recommending Ghost Recon or Call of Duty (2 or 3). The time for those games has come and gone. And anyone that recommends Kameo has no credibility.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance is fun. Make sure you pick up a copy that includes the new hero and villain packs (it will have Venom, Hulk, Dr. Doom and others).

Bioshock is getting great reviews, but that doesn't mean anything. I can tell you I checked out the demo and it seems fun. Hopefully, it doesn't fall under the Doom 3 trap. Doom 3 looked VERY good and got everyone excited, but once you played it, it was crap. Extremely boring. Walk around in the dark and run into an enemy, kill it, find a keycard to open a door and repeat the process. Bioshock better not fall into that trap or they will be pressured into recalling the game.

I am in the same boat as you, I just got my Elite a few weeks ago and am having a great time playing all of the "first gen" games.
Don't listen to anyone who says all the "old games" for 360 suck, because they don't. You dont need to spend $60 a game and get it brand new to have fun.
Kameo - $10 (Fun, but not replayable)
PGR 3 - $10 9 (Very fun and addictive racing game)
Cod3 - $15 (Great game)
Gears - $30 (Must buy)
Spiderman 3 - $20 (Not that good, don't bother)
Obilvion - Must have for RPG fans
Raindow Six 3 - Wicked awesome FPS

Don't get me wrong, I have Halo 3 pre-ordered and plan on getting Two Towers when it comes out, but the olides can be had a steal prices on ebay.

They are worth taking a look at.

Also, go to GameSpot.com and click on Xbox 360, Top Games, of All Time.

This will give a good idea of what the great games have been so far. You can't wrong with a game that was rated 9.0 or higher IMO.

I see a lot of folks recommending Oblivion.
I've put maybe 10 hours into the game and feel like I'm running in circles now.
Do you need a certain personality to get drawn into games like this, or am I doing something wrong? Most times I feel like I'm on the outside looking in, since so many seem to find the game enjoyable.

For my recommendation, I'd say Tetris. For 10 bucks, you cant go wrong, especially if your gf/bf enjoys playing as well

Besides Gears of War, I wouldn't buy any of the older games simply because we have too many great ones coming out withen the next month.

SO Play Gears. Day after tomorrow get Bioshock. By the time you're done with that, maybe PGR4, or Two Worlds. Then Halo 3 and/or America's Army. It won't be long after that until COD4 comes out.

Seriously, there are more great games coming out within the next month then you will have time to play. Don't load up on catalogue titels right now, because you won't have time for them.

Forza 2 is a joke unless you want to pretend like you're driving a car. I'm assuming you're old enough to get behind the wheel of a car and use it, so why buy a racing game when you can drive anyway?Yeah. Seriously, how hard is it to pick up a Maserati, a few models of Carrera, and a couple of R-class cars and high tail it to Nürburgring, anyhow? Plus, I'm sure most of us have our own personal workshop and access to an unlimited number of auto parts plus our own test track. I can't believe anyone would want to play a video game with all this at their disposal.

Don't listen to anyone recommending Ghost Recon or Call of Duty (2 or 3). The time for those games has come and gone. And anyone that recommends Kameo has no credibility.Yes, certainly don't get Call of Duty 2, one of the best-reviewed and most entertaining titles -- launch or otherwise. Nor Kameo, one of the most unique and charming platformers to come along in a while -- pretty graphics be damned. Stay far away!

Marvel Ultimate Alliance is fun.Yes.

Bioshock is getting great reviews, but that doesn't mean anything.Exactly. What if you're one of those people who likes games which really suck? Or you don't like a moody, cerebral, well-crafted experience? Then the reviews will be absolutely worthless.

COD2 was a great game. But if you just got your 360, wouldn't you rather play Gears of War and Bioshock? And by the time you get through with those, would you prefer Halo3 and/or America's Army, (or even Medal of Honor Airborne), all of which come out within the next month? And then COD4 will be out, (and in fact, we might should be recommending the beta to him right now.)

As much as I liked COD2, this is not the time to get it. Maybe late spring or early summer, when things start to die down he should get it, but not when we are about to get an unprecedented flood of great games.

Are you implying that only wives have common sense? :D

I agree that buying older games at low prices is better than paying $60 for the latest greatest games. I may never be allowed to hang out with the cool kids (especially when the cool kids my age are busy talking about their kids) but I've got plenty of excellent games to keep me busy for $15-30 apiece.

I'm making a couple of exceptions this year ($50 at CC for Bioshock and $42 at liongames for Halo 3), but I'll probably be buying Metroid, Mass Effect, and others this winter when the new releases are scarce and the older games are on the used market.

I've decided to finish up some of the games that I've been had for awhile instead of jumping on the latest and greatest. Of course, that could change once I get a chance to play the Bioshock demo and I suspect I'll pick up Halo 3 to play online coop with a co-worker that I know has preordered it.

For the few single player only games, that would make sense... (although I would still get Bioshock today... errr actually I did get Bioshock today).

But most of those I listed are multiplayer games, and it isn't much fun if you're way behind the curve in online shooters.

Hello,

I have never played any of the COD games until last night when I rented & played COD 2 and enjoyed it. I only really like FPS games and have both the PS3 & 360. My fiance and I loved Gears and found out you cannot play COD2 split screen in campaign mode? Can COD3 be played split screen offline like gears and why does everyone seem to not reccomend the 3rd one?

I may buy one of them(cheap now) now that I have beat gears several times.

Thoughts?

If you like online multiplayer games, I think Lost Planet is one of the most under rated games out there. It's my personal favorite. The single player campaign is average, but the multiplayer is awesome! The best part, is that you can now get it for $39 or less and better yet, all of the extra maps that you download from Live are now free!!

There really are too many good games to choose from. Since you've got the 120gb HDD, I suggest you download all of the demos from XboxLive and try everything. Depending on how much free time you have, that could keep you busy for quite a while.

Many, many good games to choose from. I think I own over 20 myself, but I've had a 360 since Dec 2005.

If you prefer single player games, COD2 is much better than COD3.

Games I'd recommend:

Lost Planet
Bioshock (wow!)
RB6:Vegas
Gears
COD2
Burnout Revenge
Ghost Recon 1&2
Crackdown
Dead Rising
Forza 2
PGR 3
Fight Night 3
Oblivion

My favorites are Bioshock, Gears of War, Crackdown, Burnout Revenge, Forza 2, DiRT.

I've played the Rainbow 6: Vegas demo and thought it was great. Also it runs better on the 360 than the PS3 port.

I just got into the Call of Duty 4 beta last night and played a few rounds. Wow. That's gonna be a great game. Very responsive feel, amazing graphics, and all running at a consistent 60fps.

Also, you owe it to yourself to pick up Ninja Gaiden Sigma for your PS3.

To the OP: Since you are just getting into the 360, I agree with previous posters that for past games you should do two things: 1) look at game rankings on review sites like IGN, Gamespot, etc. Anything with a 9.0+ is pretty much a sure bet in any genre. and 2) download demos from the Marketplace. You can queue downloads so just download a crapload of them. Set aside a weekend and check em all out. Then go out and grab your favorite few games to play.

Now, the real interesting thing is actually the upcoming games. This fall is arguably the BEST releases of new games for the 360 yet. Here's what I'm personally looking forward very much to this fall/winter: Halo 3, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Half-Life: Orange Box, Stranglehold, Beautiful Katamari, Tomb Raider Anniversary, Mass Effect, and Assassin's Creed. But hey, that's just me : )

Oh yeah, and one more thing. Since the older games are new to you, eBay is your friend. You can get all the totally awesome games from a couple of months ago or longer for like $20-$30 each used from 360 players like us who've finished the game already!

2 questions for the experts here:)

I have yet to test the online gaming from xbox live. When you all mention dowloading the free maps for Gears & Lost planet, I assume thats for online play only and not offline right? Also, I rented COD 2 and the multiplayer (offline) cant be played through the single player storyline like gears. My fiance and I like to play together fighting with each other not against. Can one play COD 3 this way or is it the same as COD 2?

Sorry for the questions, I do not play video games very often. Until I got the 360 & ps3 this year, the last unti I owned was the original Nintendo.

Thanks,
Brandon

yeah, unfortunately, not many games do the co-op story mode. its becoming more and more prevalent in games as of late but alot of FPS still have the campaign as a single player affair

NickG,

Do you know which FPS shooters have the co-op multiplayer in campaign mode?
I thought I had heard COD 3, GRAW, and R6V does.....but I have not tried them yet.

Thanks,
Brandon

Perfect dark, Gow, and the outfit have story mode co op. Doom3 is bc and has co op story mode, is cheap, and is a blast. Halo 3 will have 4 person co op story mode. Area 51 will also have story mode co op. Co op has been gaining in popularity. Halo and halo2 have split screen story mode co op.

Graw 2 has co op missions, but not the campain.

Thanks for the help. I am surprised the campaign co op idea is not more popular. I imagine its gaining momentum. Out of Perfect dark, and outfit, which one is most similar to Gears(which we like alot)?
Also, I had bought Halo 2 and the fiance and I dont really like it. We like Gears alot more for the more realistic gameplay and not alien type setting.

Thanks again.

The outfit doesn't allow saves during the co op campain. It is ww2. It is ok cheap fun. But you keep starting at the beginning.

Perfect dark is again ok cheap fun. Nothing special or as incredible as GOW. Maybe try as a rent or buy it cheap.

Doom3 is a bc xbox game and is fun to co op. Copies should be very cheap.

I think area 51 when it is released will be more up your alley. Or maybe halo 3. Gow is aliens vs humans, but you don't like halo2? Halo 2 is good split screen co op game but a little repetitive. Good cut scenes though.

Crackdown
Bioshock
GRAW1 (cheaper and better SP campaign)
RBS:V

I'd rent Lost Planet and Dead Rising, both are flawed games IMO.

I guess I should not have mentioned not liking killing aliens & etc, I just do not reallly like Halo2 for some reason. I dont know if Gears spoiled me with the neat gameplay in co op or what. Area 51 does intrigue me. Also, In Halo, the enemies are tougher to kill and it seems far less realistic to me, and you can't save your spot as often in co-op mode, just an opionion though:)

I appreciate all the feedback.

list of games i have now
Madden 08
Bioshock
Lost Planet collector's edition
Gears of war
Saints Row
Hitman
Dead Rising

hahaha nice. king kong was pretty bad anyways, i just beat it when i worked at blockbuster last year to get the 1k gamer points.

you could always pick up some xbox games too. ninja gaiden black, psychonauts and/or max payne 2 ($3!!!!) would be good to hold you off until halo 3.

Halo is way overrated. Fun, but nothing special.

Keep an eye on Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, Half-Life 2 Orange Box and a ton of other great games.
