I purchased my 360 in Jan 07 and I just received 1 Red Ring of Death and the E68 error message indicating a Hard Drive failure. I verified this because the 360 will boot up fine with my extra hard drive or without a hard drive installed at all.

My main question is will Microsoft require me to send the whole 360 in for warranty service or can I just send in the hard drive itself?

Anybody run into this issue? I really don't want to be without my 360 while it's being repaired, God knows how long that will take:confused: Especially considering I can use the 360 with my other hard drive. BTW, the working hard drive is no longer covered under warranty.

Thanks for your help.

yeah, here is a bump.. that is an interesting question, surely they'd allow you to send in the HD... they'll just make you go through a few hours of mindless tech support like....are you sure you have it plugged in? and ect..and ect.. if you're lucky and get a decent tech support guy, he'll process your hd replacement immediate.

It sounds like this is a HDD that you bought separately, and not one that came packaged with an xbox, is that right? If so, then the drive should have its own warranty, separate from the xbox warranty, so you should be able to get it serviced under warranty without sending in an xbox.

If that's the case, make it clear to them that it's the HDD that has failed, and it's not the HDD that came with the xbox... I don't think they should make you send the xbox back.

Actually, the one that failed is the one that came with the 360.

I had a similar problem, and they shipped me a new hard drive. I did not have to send in the old hard drive. Just give them a call and see if they can help.

This was for a launch day Xbox Nov 05 and I made the call in Aug 07. It took about 3 days for me to receive the package in the mail.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. Hopefully they'll take care of me like they did you.
