How often do DVR's overheat? What about some of the newer models? We have a VCR/DVD combo player sitting below a non-DVR box for the past 3 years enclosed in an entertainment cabinet with no problems because of space limitations. How much juice does a DVR draw compared to lets say a VCR/DVD combo player? We will be getting a DVR soon.

Keep your spacing (so there is plenty of ventilation) and you shouldn't have any issues.
You might consider a small UPS to plug your DVR into - after all - it is a PC (just a specialized one)
I only know about Motorola DVRs, they have many vents on top and sides for a reason; (I imagine SA DVRs are similar). So, one shouldn't stack a component on a DVR. The instructions say to give the DVR 2" of clearance on all sides. Now matter how much air the sides and back get, I don't think that could make up for blocking the top, as heat does rise. I think it is a sure way for the DVR to fail early, and in the meantime have spotty performance.
