View Full Version : XBOX Elite Lockup
teddyc23 08-20-07, 09:45 AM Has anyone else had problems with there Elite locking up? I was on Live this weekend and I had to power the xbox on and off 3 different times. Once was starting a Demo and the other times were while exiting arcade games. I have a BB warranty and tempted to swap it out. Although I am thinking of waiting for the 65nm chips. Does anyone know when we will start to see the 65nm Elites? BTW my Elite is one of the first without the Heatsink. Thanks
SuperGrafx 08-20-07, 01:21 PM Nope. No issues whatsoever with mine. And I've had my Elite since they launched in April.
Category 5 08-20-07, 01:46 PM It's happened to me twice. once was during the Bioshock demo, the other was when exiting out of a wmv VC1 playback. I don't think it's a heat issue, because the system hadn't been on that long either time. I have played Forza for hours with no problems.
Just to be sure I ran the Bioshock demo and just walked around looking through the environments for about a half hour (WOW!) and no problems. Everything seems fine since.
I imagine it'll rear it's head again eventually, but that's what the warranty is for.
slyderulz 08-20-07, 02:28 PM I've had this happen to me as well, oddly enough it was also in the Bioshock demo during the cutscene with the introduction of the little sister and the Big Daddy. I have been downloading alot more recently than I normally do (including 300 in HD) so I figured it's probably just the hard drive getting a little fragmented. I'd clear the cache but I've seen nothing to indicate that it also performs a defrag so I'm not going to bother. It only happened the one time, next time I played no issues. I also had the same thing happen a few times on my orignal launch console which is still going strong. I figure as long as it's hard drive content and the old Microsoft reboot rule works I'm fine with it - as long as it's only a few times a year ;-)
chadly25 08-20-07, 03:55 PM I wouldn't wait for the 65nm chips if I were you. I was holding out for them as well but heard that Microsoft was probably not going to come out with them at all now.

Where did you hear that little gem? Why wouldn't they? It's not an upgrade, it's a cost saving tool for Microsoft. Seems like they'd do anything possible to cut their costs at this point.
formulanerd 08-20-07, 04:04 PM i feel sorry for everyone tip-toeing around the problems. screw the warranty, remove the x-clamps and get it all over with already.
chadly25 08-20-07, 07:53 PM From what is being posted by someone seemingly close to microsoft in the xbox forums it was said that there were problems with the 65nm chips and they have been delayed. It also stated that since the new heatsink resolved all of the problems there wasn't pressure to make the switch as quickly as they originally had thought. It also says that Microsoft has signed a deal with Taiwan Semiconductor for 90nm DRAM for future 360 consoles. As of now nobody knows for sure but this guy seems somewhat credible from his previous posts. I went ahead and bought a new elite last week and decided not to wait. Just make sure if you do buy one it has a june date on it and will have the new heatsink. Anyone know more than this?
chadly25 08-20-07, 07:54 PM btw. If you want to have a read youself just go here.

I didn't copy the whole quote from the guy, here it is.
I've been following this thread for awhile, and I found some news which may be interesting. Apparently Microsoft has signed a deal with Taiwan Semiconductor for 90nm DRAM for future 360 consoles. Taiwan Semiconductor is probably the most well known and successful chip manufacturer in the world, and this should definitely be an improvement to help with the overheating issues. The interesting part of this article is that they will be utilizing the 90nm process vs the 65nm process. I wonder if they are rethinking the whole 65nm strategy. At the very least, I doubt we will see any of the Falcon chipsets in the near future. Here's the link and article:

Mine locked up once - during a Gears Live session (after 4 hours of play) - it's been on longer with no lockup.
20Geezy 08-21-07, 03:24 PM My Elite (with the extra heatsink) has locked up on me 3 times while playing Shadowrun. Twice while in a lobby and another during loading. Besides that I have had no other problems.

Just out of curiosity, is you unit verticle or horizontal? My original xbox had some issues when it was verticle but was pretty reliable when I had it down.
