Out of curiousity, what's goinng to happen to all those Blades of Glory BD discs that have been pressed, printed, and pre-ordered?

Maybe they were never pressed, and Paramount have just been holding on to release the news at the last moment.....

They are going to join E.T. for the Atari 2600 in the desert somewhere.

Edit: Doh! Beat by a nanosecond!

And wasn't the BD version superior? As in more HD extras, better sound options?

^Yep, the HD-DVD didn't have room for a TrueHD track, so it looks like Paramount will be hard pressed to get lossless on those 30GB discs.

Microsoft bought them all and they're going to burn them in a big pile in Redmond. ;)

It sucks, we were 8 days from the release, and it is still in my Netflix queue.

Regular DVD it is I guess. :(

I don't know. Was it going to have PCM? The HD DVD has TrueHD which generally can't be beat by anything else, except maybe PCM.

How exactly does PCM beat TrueHD? BTW I dont think TrueHD beats PCM either. They are both lossless.

Now I remember they dropped TrueHD from the HD DVD version, so looks like some sort of dolby digital.

And the blu-ray was going to be PCM. Maybe they'll still show up in the stores?

Is the movie any good?

You do know that there is no 18 month period for Paramount's HD DVD support. The CTO said it was an indefinite choice.

How early do stores recieve DVD's? Some stores must have boxes of BofG on BR. Maybe they were forced to mail them back. Too bad a couple couldn't fall out of the box.

JUST A JOKE GUYS (sort of) but:

Nope Paramount will ship the BD discs to the UK like Warner's did (with the HD DVD discs) with the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire US discs. You should be able to import them through Amazon.UK.

You will know if you are getting the real thing if you see the FBI warning.

They will be destroyed. The SKUs have been pulled and their UPCs can't find their way into retail. Plus it would be a PR mess.

Its an open question on what will happen to any inventory of the released titles still not distributed to retailers. They may be stored or still shipped out or even destroyed. One scenario is that they are parked in the back of a warehouse somewhere and shrink wrapped like a mummy and stuffed in a corner.

Another is they are just sent to retailers just to get rid of them and get some residual cash. Its also possible the production lot were so small that there isn't much inventory left. The strength of the announcement makes it clear that losing some BD sales, doesn't matter at all, so I think they are probably going to be embargoed from shipment to retailers.

The production run was probably much larger than what has been sold or shipped so I think its likely there was inventory left of the released titles and it will be destroyed or safely stored and will not be shipped out.

Kosty:

I was joking in the post above yours, but can they find their way to the UK like HPGOF? I don't have the effort to see what the distribution rights are for this particular title in the UK.

It's indefinite "for now" which allows them to switch back and forth hundreds of times in case it doesn't work out as planned. There's always a way out, not even Paramount is stupid enough to close a deal that lasts forever for only $150 mill. if it's true that is.

MitchR
08-23-07, 06:16 AM
it's pretty stupid of them though just to dump those disks if they had already pressed them. They could have waited till after the release and sell those copies to us. In that case they made some money off it after all and we could have enjoyed our nice lossless disk instead of listening to a DD+ track.

Well, suit yourself Paramount

They will suffer the same fate of the printed merchandise of the team losing the world series, super bowl, nba finals.
They will be sent to third world countries.
Probably to be used as coasters and frisbees.

The release specs for blu-ray only showed Dolby Digital 5.1. It didn't show anything about PCM. So blu-ray DD and hd-dvd DD+.

But since this was a comedy, I doubt the soundtrack is terribly complex anyways.

Also, since I imagine that Paramount had some advanced knowledge of their decision, I doubt that anything more than samples were pressed for this movie on blu-ray.

Can't tell if you were being serious or not, but anyway... (from wikipedia)

Dolby TrueHD, from Dolby Laboratories, is an advanced lossless multi-channel audio codec, intended primarily for high-end home-entertainment equipment, such as Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD. In this application, Dolby TrueHD competes with DTS-HD Master Audio, another lossless codec from Digital Theater System.

I can see it now. Commercials showing kids in third world countries running around with Blu-Ray disks asking for donations so they can buy a PS3 to watch them on.

Actually, what Paramount does with is will be a real clue as to what their long-term intentions are. If they stick them in a warehouse someone, someone's thinking that at some point they will be selling them.

Alternately, everyone at Microsoft may be getting a little gift at Christmas time.
