They also have alot of crap amongst the good stuff just like all the studios.
Seriously, this is bad for both sides of the fence. All this is going to do is prolong a format war that just plain sucks. Just think if there was just one format out there.....the HD-DVD guys and the Blu-Ray guys might actually get to know each other and be friends! :p

I got the XBox 360 HD DVD add-on last November for $174.99 at Future Shop. Hooked it up to my HTPC (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=8861101&postcount=1), installed PowerDVD Ultra and haven't looked back. If you have a relatively powerful PC with the appropriate video card this could be a possible solution for you.

Those are the same 3 I wanted from that annoucement. While I'll grieve for the PCM tracks I won't get from HDDVD, I'll probably still get them.

Great post.

I'll be happy if they will just release some of those movies. Come on Braveheart and Gladiator!

Paramount makes awesome movies but with 99% of them, you don't need to watch them in HD. Like all the classics, you can get for 5 bucks on dvd, no point getting any of them in HD if they even make old movies in HD, I'm not even sure they do. Even some action flicks from the 90s look kinda grainy in HD and are not worth the price difference over dvd to me.

Yea I hear you but the Paramount list that the OP posted dates back to the 1920s. You don't really need anything in HD from 1920s-1970s so the majority of the list is mostly irrelevant. I mean, are there even any b&w movies out in HD?

"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS" is a Paramount Picture from 1981 I believe?

Now maybe the OP can make a list of announced HD-DVD releases. Only a fraction of a fraction of these catalog titles will be released before the 18 months is up.

You do realize that even today, most movies are shot on film and not HD, right? Just like todays movies, older movies will benefit from HD because of film's higher resolution. And yes, that includes black and white as well as 1.33 movies.

So this list is very relevant.

Nice list. Should stick to the ones that are actually out, though, or due out. It wasn't a very big list that High Def Digest shows... did Paramount/Dreamworks make any new title annoucements in the recent hooplah?

Are you kidding me? Statements like this are outlandish. For months I've read the exact same comments about Universal on this forum.

Let me be sure I got this straight... 2 out of 8 studios, a 1/4 of the movie industry, is crap?

I'm curious what the comments would have been if they had raised a blue flag instead.

The comment that this list is full of crap is way off base IMO. That said, get back to me when you have a list of confirmed titles coming to HD-DVD. Of the titles I've heard that are announced to be coming soon Transformers was the only thing on my list to buy.

If they pump out 20+ titles that I'd like to own I'm willing to rethink my decision to stay blu, until then news announcements aren't going to induce me into buying into red.

That list is huge. I don't think I would buy many PRE 1990 movies. I don't know how much of an improvement it would be over SD DVD and the quality of the transfer.
Like this "White Christmas (1954)" Go neutral it's your best bet.

There are some great films on that list but most are not recent. Look how long it has taken Sony to get Lawrence of Arabia up to snuff. Paramount will be no different.

Instead of going neutral, I will wait my (what is it now?) 14-15 months when the Paramount hush money deal from Toshiba expires. With any luck, the continued trouncing by Blu-Ray sales will cause hddvd to fold-up shop before then. In the mean time I'll be content with the sdvd versions of these films (many of which I own already anyway).

Sorry, but movies from any era will look great in HD, compared to SD due to HD having more information and more resolution.

Film "resolution" is actually higher than HD, so you are definately losing quality in SD.

I know that Casablanca (1942) has been released in HD, so there are B&W films being released in HD.

Paramount makes awesome movies but with 99% of them, you don't need to watch them in HD. Again, as I just stated above, EVERY movie will benefit from being in HD over SD, as the film "resolution" is actually higher than HD. You can see more information and detail than SD.

Unfortunately grain is seen in even new movies....take "300" for instance! A little grainy for my taste, but it was a great movie! Grain can either be just because of the film, or possibly the way the director wanted!

how many of those will actually be released within the next 18 months? if sales remain lopsided in favor of blu-ray, and after 18 months profiles should be set and replication costs should be reduced, we may very well see those films on blu-ray.

Is what you posted a list of titles to be released on HD DVD?

geocab

No, they won't be releasing any more HD DVDs. This post was made last year when HD DVD and Blu-ray were battling it out as a showing of the movies Paramount and Dreamworks has the rights to and could potentially be released one day.
