I then asked when the INDIANA JONES set would hit and if it would be exclusive to HD. Rob responded that on the films that Steven directs, he wants the titles to be available in both formats - so those will be cross-platform titles. However, the rest of Dreamworks, Viacom/Paramount's world... those will be HD DVD exclusive for the next few years at least. Can you imagine BLOCKBUSTER not letting people rent TRANSFORMERS, SHREK THE THIRD, etc? Me Either. This format war is a fascinating chess game, isn't it?
Rob Moore President Worldwide Marketing, Distribution and Home Entertainment for Paramount Pictures, is the person being quoted! This is a direct contradiction of Bill Owen's educated guess that Speilberg favored the Blu-ray format due to his approval of the "Close Encounters" BD disk.
Can this day get any more crazy??!! :D
beatboy77 08-20-07, 06:39 PM So this means Blu-ray will still get:
ET
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Jurassic Park Trilogy
NICE!

kowhite 08-20-07, 06:41 PM Given that JP is Universal, I think that instead means neither format will get it at all for the time being.
So this means Blu-ray will still get:
ET
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Jurassic Park Trilogy
NICE!
~JoshET and jurassic park are both universal so i don't know if it will come to blu ray. but i don't think they will be released either on hd-dvd unless they make them available for both formats.
mixtapem 08-20-07, 06:42 PM Won't we also get Saving Private Ryan?
the blow might not be so bad.
If DVD was ANY indication of Speilberg and Lucas,
no one will see any of thier titles on either Bluray or HDDVD for quite some time.

Indiana Jones Trilogy
Jurassic Park Trilogy

No, just Indiana Jones. If we were going by your assumption, then HD DVD would be getting Close Encounters of the Third Kind...which they are not.

You know this? Are you sure?
freebird2003 08-20-07, 07:33 PM will now its no longer in blu.
You know this? Are you sure?
yes we know that.
Spielberg and Lucas have not released any of thier films to HDDVD or Bluray.
In other words Eric D was being funny with that statement as neither are getting any of the aforementioned movies. Not for quite some time.

How intresting considering that Steven has not ok'd any of his flicks for release on the next gen format.
Curious to see how Columbia/Tristar got the ok from him to do this as again "creative control" rest squarely on Steven Speilberg for that movie. Perhaps he did the ok but as what happened with DVD. I will hold judgement until it actually hits the shelves (incase you are wondering, Indiana Jones was also announced but did not come to fruition until almost 4 years after the date).
Chris Rein 08-20-07, 10:01 PM Good to know.
I'm still confused though how Paramount/Dreamworks can go HD-DVD only, when Blockbuster just went all Blu. Aren't they part of the same company? Interesting.
Julian Lalor 08-20-07, 10:06 PM No, just Indiana Jones. If we were going by your assumption, then HD DVD would be getting Close Encounters of the Third Kind...which they are not.
Unless, of course, Spielberg is a BD fan and not a HD DVD fan, in which case the non-appearance of Close Encounters on HD DVD makes sense.
Ergoguy34 08-20-07, 10:07 PM How fn stupid is it reading all this we will get this and you will get that crap, this format war sucks and I just want movies in HD....
kowhite 08-20-07, 10:09 PM You know this? Are you sure?
What, you think Sony is going to release CE3K on HD-DVD? I'd imagine if the choice was between releasing it on both formats, or neither...they'd pick neither.
AaronSCH 08-20-07, 10:09 PM Both formats are officially dead

No they trade under independent stock symbols and have their own management....Paramount spun off Blockbuster because it was not considered a viable investment....AFAIK. So, BB probably went exclusive BD to piss off Paramount who were going HD exclusive.....
Julian Lalor 08-20-07, 10:14 PM CBS is also an independent arm of Viacom. The Press Release omitted any reference to CBS titles.
Good to know.

$150 million dollars has a funny way of changing companies minds. Only losers here are consumers.
Eric D. 08-20-07, 10:19 PM Wow, I can't believe some of you guys are having such a hard time with this. First of all, Harry Knowles talked to the President of Worldwide Marketing, Distribution and Home Entertainment for Paramount Pictures. So his statements on Speilberg wanting his films to be on both formats applies only to his studio...Paramount. Why would he be announcing another studios's forthcoming plans for films that he has no control over? He was only talking about how Paramount/Dreamworks would handle Speilberg's films. So that means that BD will undoubtably be getting all four Indiana Jones films, Saving Private Ryan and all other Speilberg directed Paramount/Dreamworks films.
So BD's chances of getting Jaws and Jurassic Park is just as good as HD DVD getting Close Encounters. It will only happen if Universal or Sony go completely format neutral. Now if that was not the case, there would already be an HD DVD announcenment of Close Encounters...which there is not.
Edit: I'm not an insider or anything, this is just common sense imo.
What I can't understand, both Blockbuster and Paramount belong to Viacom. Maybe they have autonomy picking business strategies, but having it's subsidiaries fighting each other can't be good for Viacom profits.
Iggster 08-20-07, 10:50 PM So this means Blu-ray will still get:
ET
Jurassic Park Trilogy

Both of those are universal and universal has NO plans whatsoever to go even neutral. They plan on staying HD DVD exclusive...
Theirs more chance of seeing all diehards on HD DVD then any of these movies on blu ray.
My source said he heard that JPT might be coming to HD DVD for the holidays but said they might hold out for next years holiday if JP4 is out by then, but filming wont even start till next year so we Might not see jpt on any format till 2009..

You sure about that?
Viacom sold all of its holdings of Blockbuster some time ago.
Sumner Redstone thought it would eventually tank when downloads become the norm.
Category 5 08-21-07, 12:26 AM Spielberg and Lucas could decide which format wins in a second. Their movies are the quintessential movie experiences. The type that HD is supposed to bring into the home.
Star Wars Trilogy, Indiana Jones Trilogy, Jurrassic, Back to the Future Trilogy, ET, Private Ryan, Schindler, etc. If these titles were to pick a side and stick to it that would be the end of the other. These are the movies HD is made for...not the 40 year old Virgin!
@rexdigital
You're right, 3 years ago.
Google failed me.
TheCuze 08-21-07, 12:54 AM Honestly, I foresee a lot of filmakers will be very upset by Paramount's decision. This is the future of home video we're talking about, and its obvious that Speilberg was really pissed off at this decision. I also know Ridley Scott and Jerry Bruckheimer have also spoken up in support of Blu-ray in the past. Filmakers rake in most of their money from home video sales these days, and this being the case, I would be livid if my distributor was dumping my movie solely onto a losing format. I would certainly not be suprised to here if Speilberg also gets them to release Transformers on both formats as well. He produced it, and stands to not make as much money with this deal.
On a side note: F Microsoft, I will NEVER download my movies...unless they paid ME $150 Million and made a ton of false promises
