And both formats may be destined to become small niches like Laserdisc. What a damn shame for those of us that love movies and have large HDTVs or projectors.

I love my PS3 but don't really care which side wins as long as we can have successful mainstream replacement to the SD DVD.

I wonder if the studios (besides Sony) really want optical disks anyway. It would be much more lucrative for them to charge us for every downloading and viewing and that way there's no pesky used market.

In any event, today's news was a bummer. Sony needs to get the price of its stand alone players down to $300 and the sooner the better.

exactly what i was thinking today. the longer this war drags on, the more likely consumers will be stuck with HD movies only available via download at a fraction of the quality we're getting on HDDVD/BluRay, and with far more draconian/restrictive DRM.
I mean, i'm format neutral- I've had a tosh a1 for almost 6 months now, as well as a PS3. I *REALLY* don't care who wins, but i DO want the level of quality to continue to go up. This announcement makes me very pessimistic about the prospects of that happening long term.
