View Full Version : The best part about HD DVD... news is actually news
MichaelHDDVD 08-20-07, 10:56 PM Today showed one thing. News from the HD DVD side is actually NEWS. None of the bs that Sony or the BDA put out there. The Target story showed that Sony is desperate a story about an end cap exploded into Target dropping HD DVD, going BD exclusive... what nonsense. The HD DVD side has it where they counts. They won't ruin their reputation over false stories like Blu-Ray and the Target story. Even if news on the HD DVD front is few and far I'd rather it have actual meaning like today then the blu-side and their stores every other day about how HD DVD is dead.
HD DVD is here to stay whether the Blu-Side likes it or not.
HomerJay 08-20-07, 11:07 PM Kinda like Fox BD news at CES 2007...:)...or should I say all of 2007...;)
You're right about substance and each side's press releases. HD DVD news is never anything as trite as ordering up a few endcaps (or Fox cancellations or Fox re-announcements). A studio switching sides?...now that's press worthy...:D
alfbinet 08-20-07, 11:11 PM A breath of fresh air. I don't think they are even posting in their own forum.:D
e_professor 08-20-07, 11:12 PM ^ They will once BDA and company gives them something official that can be spinned to HD DVD's "disadvantage".

Time to fall back and regroup, eh? :)
Snickering Hound 08-20-07, 11:18 PM They'll be back.
It takes time to compose a response to put on the dry erase boards at those viral marketing firms you know.
Their initial response was picking a $150 million figure out of thin air that Paramount was bribed by Microsoft.
There will be others.
thewretched22 08-20-07, 11:21 PM Sony, and the BDA like to play dirty and prey on the general publics lack of knowledge in these formats.
rexdigital 08-21-07, 12:27 AM I always enjoy the press releases quoting Andy Parsons, chairman of the BDA.
evolver 08-21-07, 12:32 AM It's nice when news actualy contains information, which was once defined by some really smart guy as, "any difference that makes a difference." "Fox is BD exclusive," is only news the first time you say it. ;)

It is called integrity. Doing buisness the right way. All of that BDA FUD ans spinning will eventually be the cause of their demise. Already they are spinning that the only reason for Paramount's support is some money that they were paid. I guess it sound a lot better than the reasons that Paramount gave.
Have you noticed that whenever Amir maintains military silence, something big always happens in the HD DVD camp? ;)
5thDanMaster 08-21-07, 12:43 AM Paramount drops Blu, what is Sony going to do?
Dreamworks says "no more" to Blu-Ray, time to watch Sony spin away!
Universal > Sony
Paramount > Fox
Dreamworks > MGM
Weinstein > Lionsgate .
I just noticed your new signature. You sir, are a hoot.:D
G-force 08-21-07, 01:05 AM Todays news looks like it made some people very happy. Unfortunately it also looks like it has turned the HD DVD forum back to the kindergarten it was before christmas '06.
I had a Toshiba XA1 last year but gave it to my parents because it was a troublesome machine with all kinds of glitches, and my PS3 operated silky smooth, well I'm glad I kept my HD DVD's cause it looks like I'll prolly be picking up a new player once some of the promises of new titles comes true.
So, who makes the best sub-$500 HD player these days???
Let's take this news like grown ups. I've spent equal time in both format forums, and this forum seems to get tainted by a superiority complex more than the BD forum when news like this drops.
flame on...
fritzilla 08-21-07, 01:07 AM Yeah, I am tired of reading press releases from the BDA every other week about how, "Blu-ray has a clear victory, Blu-ray is the clear choice, Blu-ray is the winner..."
If you have to publish that every other week, it only looks like you don't believe it yourself.
They are trying to win the war with the notion that "everyone already knows Blu-ray won because they read it somewhere."

I'm sure the folks are thankful you dumped that troublesome tank of a player on their lap!
You can't spell HD without HD-DVD :)
^ Actually, you can spell HD without HD DVD. I think you meant it the other way around. Or maybe you're just being facetious?

Yes but this forum generally just says "Paramount goes exclusive, good news", whereas the BluRay boys go "... goes exclusive, the war is over, Blu wins, death to HD-D..."
We are happy, but we are NOT proclaiming this the end of the war like they do every time.
cnickersonjr 08-21-07, 07:44 AM So, who makes the best sub-$500 HD player these days???
A question better asked in the HD-DVD players thread! (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=151)

The only folks they are trying to convince are themselves.
I can picture them in the blue slippers, clicking them together, eyes closed.....
"HD DVD is dead, HD DVD is dead".

HDTVFAN0001 08-21-07, 07:53 AM So what is Sony's response - the hire their PR firm to run interference by accusing Paramount of caving in to financial incentives.
How lame. Sony must think that since they bribed several studios for BD exclusivity (its under formal investigation by the European Union by the way, not my claim), they think their practices are followed by the rest of the world.
Here's the response from Paramount (NEWS):
Price A Factor In HD DVD Support, Studios Say
And the format war rages on. Monday Paramount and DreamWorks Animation both declared exclusive support for the HD DVD disc format, announcing that titles distributed by the companies' various subsidiaries (including Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films) will be released exclusively on HD DVD going forward.
"We decided to release ... DreamWorks Animation titles exclusively on HD DVD because we believe it is the best format to bring high quality home entertainment to a key segment of our audience -- families," said DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg. "We believe the combination of this year's low-priced HD DVD players and the commitment to release a significant number of hit titles in the fall makes HD DVD the best way to view movies at home."
The exclusive program is set to begin with the release of "Blades of Glory," "Transformers" and "Shrek the Third" later this month.
According to studio execs, HD DVD's lower manufacturing costs and add-on technologies -- like interactivity and community features -- led to the decision.
"The combination of Paramount and DreamWorks Animation brings a critical mass of current box office hits to consumers with a line-up of live action and animated films that are perfect for HD DVD," said Paramount Pictures CEO Brad Grey. "Part of our vision is to aggressively extend our movies beyond the theater, and deliver the quality and features that appeal to our audience. I believe HD DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount."
Does this mean the HD DVD vs. Blu-ray debate is finally over? Hardly, but things are certainly heating up.
Brad1963 08-21-07, 12:14 PM I'm a supporter of both formats but am glad this happened. Things needed to be shaken up a bit. HD DVD has alot to offer and I get tired of BD fanboys and Bill Hunt constantly trashing the format. In reality Blu Ray took the lead from PS3 while HD DVD has done quite well with stand alone players. It will be interesting to see how the year plays out, but I am glad the smug BD supporters got a dose of reality.
the war it's stupid.. All studios will be go neutral and the people decide witch technology is better such as XBOX 360, Playstation, Wii, etc.
In my opinion Blue Ray is the best for Games, and Hd DVD for home theater.
Sincerely regards
AustinSTI 08-21-07, 02:26 PM This thread is ridiculous....news is news? Umm ok; when the story broke it was paramount was exclusive and people were talking about speilberg titles, then it became exclusive except for spielberg titles, then we found out they got paid $150M (which is CONFIRMED by various news outlets) and then we find out its only an 18 month deal...
Much like the target deal not all details were available when the news broken so it started off general and became specific because news agencies have to be first to get the story out when it breaks. More details become available as time goes on and the story changes. You want to call that spin? Cmon now...don't go making up some stuff about the paramount deal being 'real news'...that's ridiculous. The EXACT same thing happened with this announcement as did with the target deal. The news changed because more details were made public. That's not spin....
diggumsmax 08-21-07, 02:34 PM I just like the fact that everyone was shocked by this announcement. Everyone who knew about this deal didn't let it leak. I read about the Blockbuster on Target news on here because it leaked from an insider before it made its way public. As George Bush would say "Shock and Awe".
