View Full Version : But will Paramount actually REALLY start pumping out content or what?
Amiable-Akuma 08-20-07, 11:26 PM Great news for HD DVD, obviously. But, I'm sure it is also obvious that for this announcement to have its "intended effect" - Paramount needs to seriously increase their rate of production and release volumes.
I'm sure I'm not the only one on either side of the war who has been seriously frustrated by Paramount's herky-jerky-ass release schedule thus far.
So does this mean their pussy-footing is over or what? What do you realistically expect?
Because, I mean, if they continue to act as they have - only putting out a few mostly minor catalogs to go with a new release randomly every three months or so - then the BD studio content will still be able to swallow HD DVD whole...
Your opinion?
eapleitez 08-20-07, 11:29 PM According to Harry Knowles conversation with some Paramount honcho, one benefit revealed was that they intend to publish more, now that they only have to concentrate on one format. I suspect that this will be true.
Jay Mammoth 08-20-07, 11:30 PM I hear ya, but hopefully now that they don't have to worry about releasing movies in 3 formats they will release all of their new releases date and day with the SD version. 5 catalog titles a month would be awesome as well.
MichaelHDDVD 08-20-07, 11:32 PM As long as I can buy Gladiator and Braveheart :):p:D
Chris Rein 08-20-07, 11:39 PM Yes!
Blades of Glory
Face/Off
Top Gun
Jack Ryan Collection
Shrek the Third
Transformers
There's six right there on annoucement day! :p
I'm sure they can't sit on this golden opportunity!
e_professor 08-20-07, 11:44 PM I do hope and believe that there will be a reasonable number of releases...
There's no point in churning 5 releases every week and compromise overall quality.
MichaelHDDVD 08-20-07, 11:46 PM The way I see it is that Paramount and Dreamworks both usually gave HD DVD and Blu-Ray versions of the same movie separate encodes
MI:III
Blu-Ray - MPEG-II
HD DVD - VC-1
Flags of our Fathers
Blu-Ray - AVC/MPEG-IV
HD DVD - VC-1
If Paramount does the same number of encodes but for different movies they end up releasing twice as many movies.
So instead of having to do an encode for Transformers on both formats they only have to do one. So instead of doing a encode for Blu-Ray they can choose a catalog title for HD DVD like Gladiator. Now repeat this scenario over and over again. No encode for the Blu-Ray version of Shrek 3, so they choose a catalog title for HD DVD like Forest Gump. No encode for the Blu-Ray version of Stardust, so they choose a catalog title for HD DVD like a Star Trek movie
That seems like a win-win situation because Paramount doesn't actually spend any more money on encodes. They just shift the BD funds to the HD DVD side and end up releasing twice as many HD DVD movies for the same amount of $$$, excluding production costs which end up breaking even more in Paramount's favor because they don't have to order two different types of discs.
evolver 08-20-07, 11:47 PM No, I expect they'll announce a whole bunch of discs soon and then delay them indefinitely like they did before.
Oh wait....
NM. :D
Digital Man5 08-21-07, 12:27 AM In order for them to really beef up their line up, they're going to have to start going crazy with new and catalog releases like Universal has. I am hoping they do, there is so much good stuff in their library!
danieledmunds 08-21-07, 04:30 AM I expect we will see a few big titles around christmas and the rest will be crap

LiquidX 08-21-07, 05:49 AM Amiable-Akuma, what is with all your threads tonight? Each one carries the same agenda, the obvious one is you trying to cast doubt onto the revelations in every possible way.
The wounds are still fresh, but man, get a grip.
MSmith83 08-21-07, 05:52 AM Not too long ago, a Paramount insider stated in another forum that the studio is working on The Godfather trilogy as we speak. I hope we see that series soon.
