View Full Version : Die Hard quadrilogy in high-def on BD! I mean, C'MON!!!

I don't know about you but, for me, the announcement of the Die Hard quadrilogy coming to high-def/BD - in less than like, what?, 3 MONTHS! - is the single biggest "title announcement" the war has seen thus far.

The only thing comparable that could be announced would be the Aliens quadrilogy. The only thing better? I guess, Lord of the Rings or whatever.

But, I mean, for old-school action fans - no trilogy is better.

This is crazy, I know it was rumored but now we have CONFIRMATION!!!!!!!!! Woo-hoo!

I actually prefer the trilogy itself, - to me, "Live Free" suffered from needing a bit of tighter editing between action scenes (for a better pace to the movie as a whole) and a greater/truer sense of menacing jeopardy for the 3 main "hero" characters - but still...ALL IS WELL. And, hey, if Fox has some R-rated "uncut" special-edition version of "Live Free" up their sleeve...then all is VERY well...

Your thoughts!?

As great as this day has been for HD-DVD, this is a good announcement. Die Hard is a killer title and the third film is amazing as well. Fox should release Aliens and REALLY move some units.

I will be buying the set, and will thus finally be able to retire my SD DVDs of the first three movies. I love them all. I think Die Harder is the weakest of the four, but it's still great nonetheless.

And Bruce Willis already said that Live Free will either be R or Unrated when it hits. He filmed different sequences specifically for the DVD release. It was on an interview with both the main stars. It came up when all the rating questions came flying in about it being PG-13. I guess we'll find out soon!

I loved Die Hard, but it seemed like the sequels got more and more ridiculous (felt the same way about Lethal Weapon), but haven't seen "Live Free" yet. Still, I'm happy about the announcement as well. I'm curious if this announcement means that they've gotten BD+ working, and on these titles; as many seemed to think that's what FOX was waiting on. Hopefully it will be tested adequately so as not to cause any issues with my PS3 :).

Not a Sam L Jackson fan?

Personally I thought 3 and 4 were the best of the bunch.

2 sucked something hard, and 1 I could never watch repeatedly because it felt like a Christmas movie. :D

The first Die Hard is a classic, and a movie I can watch over and over. The rest were just ok, worth watching once. I hope they look better than what I saw on HBO HD the other night. If I buy a PS3 between now and then, then I know these will be must buys for me (or at least the first movie will).

Ok, thanks for the clarification. Yeah, I thought I was the only one who saw that when I watched it. Overall the movie was disappointing not just because they made McClane superman but rather the watering down of his character to a pg-13 level.

Just as long as I get Die Hard before Christmas. Die Hard is my favourite action movie of all time, and I watch it every Christmas Eve... I've been watching it every Christmas for the past decade now. I remember getting the DVD as an early Christmas present, just so the family could watch it in widescreen with surround sound...

...Can't wait for the HD version.

Well, if you have never seen the Die Hard movies then you probably won't think much of Die Hard, as you might not be much of an action movie fan, or be really young.

But Die Hard pretty much ushered in an entire sub-genre of action movie. The entire "one man versus the genius bad guy" plot came from die Hard. Up to that point action flicks usually had the hero as an unstoppable killing machine mowing down tons of inept bad guys (Commando is a good example). Die Hard made the hero a blue collar guy and made the bad guys smart, with a detailed plan, personalities, and agendas. This formula was copied endlessly.

So you may not be that impressed, as most of what made Die Hard so good has been imitated so many times it won't seem all that fresh to you, kind of like how tame "Seven Samurai" feels, even though it ushered in many, many conventions of cinema and action movies.

I can't imagine why people who disliked 2 liked 3.

For me, 3 ruined the central concept of the franchise to that point - McClane was just an "ordinary cop" caught in extraordinary circumstances, trying to save his wife.

Given all they went through in 1 and 2, suddenly in 3 she's a bi**h and in 4 they''re divorced.

At least in 4 they did a good job with making his daughter truly act like McClane's child, with a fair bit of Holly to her as well.

I will buy the set just for parts 1 and 2.

Die Harder is actually my favorite of the series. Great cast and nonstop action.

Part 3 ruined the character for me and there was no need to have Samuel Jackson running around with him the entire movie.

I still hate it that Holly divorced him too after everything they went through. Lame.

Part 4 was ok but just did not have the same "feel" as the others. I really missed Michael Kamen's score...they tried but it was lacking. The main bad guy and supporting bad guys just seemed really cheesy compared to the Die Hard 1-3 villains.

Regardless, bring on the set in HD!

I like them all, but I don't rewatch 2 & 3 enough to justify a purchase, for those I'll just keep the sd...but the first one I watch about once a year, and since Live Free or Die Hard was right up there with the first for me, it is the MUST OWN of the series - just so much damn fun.

I will definately be picking up 2 and perhaps 1 if it is not too expensive. I haven't watched 4 but may choose to rent first. Couldn't put it any better. I still like 3 and 4, but they are completely different movies than the first 2 for me, kinda like I barelly see them as sequels to 1 and 2. They are just nice action movies on their own.

Now for part 1, WOW, this is just the single greatest action film ever!!!

Part 2 is a very good follow up IMO, but of course it pales compared to the first.

How much? I bought Mission Impossible for $59.00. Is FOX off there rocker? That is rediculous.
Are they trying to lose the war all by themselves? I mean the Paramount price for STTOS @ $249.00 was bad enough! I hope they do release them separetly.

As far as I know, Fox has yet to announce the pricing for these movies. What that poster was saying is that he'll buy all four movies if they don't cost around $40 MSRP a movie. That is unlikely if these will be available in a set, but you never know with Fox.

3 was horrid - I never purchased it and can't stand it when it's on. It could easily be a Bruce Willis/Samuel L. Jackson film named Explosives Chase! for all it has to do with Die Hard.

BTW, Bruce probably hated filming 2 because he probably didn't like being in the cold for much of the shoot.

If the series is only available as a set, I'll literally throw the disc of 3 away unless I can find someone willing to buy it in a jewel box on eBay.

Actually, Die Hard 3 was never intended to be a Die Hard movie. It was written as a generic "buddy cop" action flick (working title: "Simon Says") but Fox had been planning a 3rd Die Hard movie and just adapted the existing screenplay instead of writing an "original" John McClane story .....

Man, it's not even close - Die Hard is head and shoulders better than any of the subsequent releases. It's smarter, funnier, and very well cast. Die Harder was a letdown for sure, though it is watchable. Die Hard 3 took an uptick, though was very weak in places. Live Free or Die Hard is execrable moviemaking, preposterous to the point of not making a lick of sense.

Overall, I buy the box set easy though. Die Hard is that good.

The thing is, as I mentioned, 3 just doesn't fit.

At least in 4, we've got Lucy acting like Holly, first with the Gennero bit and then by acting very much the way a McClane daughter would. We also had at least a one second flash of Bonnie Bedelia. It at least tries to maintain a rational Die Hard universe.

I'm just rehashing old bits of my last posts here, but though I admit Die Harder was not the film Die Hard was, I certainly enjoyed it quite a bit and watch it whenever Fox Movie Channel shows it, where I actively avoid 3.

I guess to each their own.

Wait a second. I have seen a few threads with comments on catalog titles. I will use Gladiator as an example. It gets shot down as being catalog, and wont sell much, even by a few HDDVD fans.

"Gladiator is crap and catalog. That equals no sales to the little people".

"As Pirates and the Matrix have shown, catalog titles don't sell nearly as well as newly released films"

"Either way, Gladiator isn't going to set any records."

"Gladiator is a classic..........but.........I would imagine many already own the flick (strangely I do not) = how many will double dip? Will it sell any players? While I like the movie I wouldn't double dip for it."

All of a sudden Die Hard is the format defining catalog title? I thought the general consensus esp by BD fans is catalogs dont sell well? Which is it? Or is it that catalogs "rock" if its your prefered format?

For the record, I WILL pick up the Die Hard trilogy. But no way in hell is ANY single Die Hard movie more popular than Gladiator for example. Do I need to quote the tons of BD only people that were creaming over this title BEFORE the big Paramount news?

rickyricardo

But no way in hell is ANY single Die Hard movie more popular than Gladiator for example.

Although I agree that the original Die Hard trilogy won't exactly sell through the roof you are way off stating that Gladiator is more popular than any Die Hard movie.

Gladiator may have been critically acclaimed, but the original Die Hard was a genre busting classic and it's premise and execution are still used in dozens of movies a year. I think the 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (versus 78% for Gladiator) speaks for itself.

Here is the problem with those numbers

Fresh: 114 Rotten: 33 For Gladiator
Fresh: 44 Rotten: 2 For Die Hard

Die hard did not have all that many people reviewing it, not to mention Gladiator won or was nominated for how many Awards?

Also Look at the $

Gladiator

Box Office: $187,344,551
VHS Rentals: $83,880,000

Die Hard

Box Office:$81,350,242
Rentals:$36,000,000

Of course you have to adjust inflation, etc.

Anyway, dont get me wrong, I love Die Hard and will buy the trilogy.
