So far I am only aware of TiVo compatibility with Amazon Unbox and the iTunes store with AppleTV. There's still Movielink.com, CinemaNow.com, and probably others that offer legal movie downloads either for rent or purchase. TiVo will cost you $300 + monthly service, AppleTV is $300...to have all the options just isn't cost effective at the moment. I'd like to see a consolidated system that is compatible with everything, and costs <$300.
My vision for what the future holds is a Wi-Fi capable device that is not only a DVR, but has compatibility with any existing and future legal download service. You can access a menu listing all the stores you can rent/buy from and then click on one, download the movie, and start watching immediately, as all the stores' movie player software is built in (or if a new store opens, it will be added automatically through either an automatic update or firmware upgrade.)
No need for an HD DVD or Blu-Ray player...if you've got a 1080p TV, just download a movie in 1080p. A couple terabytes of storage space in the next year or two will probably be feasible at a premium price.
Hopefully a company will make this a reality soon...I honestly envision it as being the future of the industry.
