View Full Version : Can they really just cancel Blades of Glory a week before its release?
Dr Kain 08-21-07, 01:42 AM Seriously, is Paramount really going to cancel Blades of Glory a week before its release even though all of the commercials have been advertising it like crazy? Wouldn't that be a waste of money then after they produced thousands of copies?
I'm sure the $150 million they got more than pays for the pressings. ;)
trgraphics 08-21-07, 01:45 AM Apparently so! Not a bad way to get people to buy HD DVD players if this and many others films are of interest that had been announced.
At least it's not a title to lose sleep over.
AustinSTI 08-21-07, 09:22 AM My money will just go to Fox...

I have seen the "updated" commercials last night, and they just say "coming to dvd". They have removed the Blu-Ray reference, however have not added the HD-DVD reference yet
jlangner 08-21-07, 09:36 AM Yea, had it pre-ordered as well from amazon. /sigh
Ok, is it just me but I could care less if Paramount is releasing "Blades of Glory" on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD... It was a horrible movie at best, and barely a rental at best...
mdc3000 08-21-07, 11:10 AM ^ just you. Blades of Glory was awesome. Hilarious throughout and a classic Will Ferrell flick.
kmiller32906 08-21-07, 11:36 AM Yes. And the few that leaked(saw a pic on this site) will go for way more than any Will Ferall figure skating movie should.Just wish I had on to sell
GizmoDVD 08-21-07, 11:42 AM I'll be watching it on HD DVD
jdawg131 08-21-07, 11:42 AM Blades of Glory is a hilarious movie.
CorruptedDragon 08-21-07, 12:04 PM No they cant! In fact, at this moment federal agents are surrounding the paramount offices and demanding the release of blades of glory! OH wait, they can, its their movie!
maingon 08-21-07, 12:08 PM ^ just you. Blades of Glory was awesome. Hilarious throughout and a classic Will Ferrell flick.
Plus Jenna Fisher in HD, in that outfit....:D
Thats why I feel like they cheated me. I watched their movies and downloaded their trailers off the playstation network.... They should have at least kept their commitments to their customers. IE release the movies that were promised.
For them to schedule movies, then release trailers in HD on the playstation network... then release exclusively on HD-DVD.... I just feel as though they misled and cheated me.
I will not support them in the future.
zalahmar 08-21-07, 12:10 PM My money will just go to Fox...
And you'll be paying for it too..... Catalog titles priced the same $40 as Brand Spanking new releases. Fox = Ripoff IMO. Only time I buy their titles is when there is a huge sale, or their day and date that I want which I can justify the extra money for.
GizmoDVD 08-21-07, 12:13 PM I will not support them in the future.
Yeah, just like all the HD DVD supporters who said they would not support Fox, Sony or Disney. You will change that tune in a few wees I'm sure.
JosephShaw 08-22-07, 12:19 AM Amazon still shows that I'm supposed to have Blades of Glory shipped on 8/28 as of 11:18 PM CST.

Hmmm, did Fox Sony or Disney advertise a release on HD-DVD and then pull it a few days before because they were bought off? If they did, you have legit beef.
Paramount advertised on the Playstation network, they scheduled BD movies. And because someone threw a few $$$ there way, they cancelled those.
Its fine that they chose HD-DVD. But they should have kept their commitments to the customers by releasing promised films. Commitments to your customers shouldnt be on the bargaining table.
Its easy for me to avoid stardust, transformers and shrek(movies that I had planned on buying)
Iggster 08-22-07, 12:50 AM My money will just go to Fox...
If they ever release anything... announcement or not but when it comes to fox, unless its on the shelfs most wont believe it lol
yellowcanary73 08-22-07, 01:07 AM I smell class action law suite alright now we can make some attorneys rich
kucharsk 08-22-07, 08:30 AM All studios say that release dates are subject to change without notice, so there's absolutely nothing you can do about this.
Except bid on one of the copies that's sure to "leak" onto eBay somehow (hey, now there's how Paramount could get around the issue; watch out for that Dutch auction of 10,000 Blades of Glory BDs by "bgrey" :D)

I personally do not believe in law suits its always better to handle it with a baseball bat.
Bailey151 08-22-07, 12:32 PM No fan of the movie & don't generally post in here..............but........an outsider's opinion -
It's just freak'n stupid. The discs have been pressed & they're ready to go - the point of dumping it now is?
Sorry, just can't see it (even if it's the $$$, they're courting you = you have the positional advantage = you dictate the terms). So simple to say "we'll do it starting w/ XYZ"
thewretched22 08-22-07, 12:55 PM They can, and they did

That's the point. They did negotiate the terms, and this was part of the terms agreed upon. Paramount may lose money on dumping so many Blu Rays, but it appears they're being paid to do so.
JamonWithLove 08-22-07, 01:04 PM I am not going to buy the title on HD DVD anyway, but it seems like such a waste considering a good amount of people would have bought this on Blu-ray. what will they do with all the pressed copies???
edo9125 08-22-07, 01:15 PM I cant believe what Iam reading. These are corporations not fuzzy little that teddy bears that wanna make you feel better. They exist to make deals and money. This is nothing new sony did the same when MGM distribution rights went over to Fox. They destroyed the RoboCop Blu-ray's Iam one of the lucky few who got a leaked copy. The same thing also happened for With a Fish called Wanda special edition dvd they were supposed to be released but were destroyed when Fox took over but there are still some leaked copies on the web some places. The same will happen with Blades of Glory, the ones in their possession will be destroyed and they will try to get back the ones that were already sent out. Either way some will reach the public.
bender29 08-22-07, 01:28 PM It's not like this movie was worth the purchase anyways.

Heaven forbid that corporate America takes any responsibility for what they sell to consumers exactly whats wrong in America today.

Id guess no BDs were ever pressed. This deal may have been in the works for months. Most store get stock a week or so ahead. If that were the case a few may have leaked on to the fourm. Pictures anyway..
Meh, I wasn't planning on buy Blades of Glory anyway. I'm more bummed about Transformers.
briankmonkey 08-22-07, 02:10 PM Curious is the HD DVD version going to have a lossless surround track?

Didn't that merry-go-round already happen? As in lossless for Blades of Glory - why? :D
Johnsteph10 08-22-07, 02:39 PM It worked for Fox...repeatedly (though it was greater than a week)

I didn't watch it in the theaters and I simply would like to know. I've asked the same question for blu-ray titles. I know the blu-ray version had it but that was cancelled.
kmiller32906 08-22-07, 02:43 PM You guys who want it do know that evil thieves will upload the HD-DVD onto Newsbin.com and evil pirates will be able to download load it and image it onto a blu-ray. Evil pirates. I would never do such a thing. No clue how I had King Kong on BRD for months.
Neo1965 08-22-07, 02:44 PM Blades of Glory was just as appropriate on HDM as Talladega Nights, meaning, it had little to show for all the extra pixels... At least there's some nascar footage on TN, but even that was of doubtful value due to all the dust thrown around in the segments.
Still, I had it on order as it was a blockbuster, and I had to collect it. Now I have to think if I will get it in the red box. This is not Bourne or Transformers, so I'll pass this time around. (Paramount and Fox and Universal sell the most expensive HDM disks around).

You're probably right about the deal being in the works for quite a while, but I was under the impression that Sony handled the authoring of Paramount's BDs, and handled the BD50 replication. If that's the case, Paramount would have had to have gone through the motions with Sony, otherwise they would have known something was up.
Everybody please correct me if I am mistaken.
A BR owner need not mourn a Will Farrell release. Now, the Jack Ryan collection, that is a loss...
