I am guessing the Paramount announcement created more excitement then the 2004 USA presidential vote. ALMOST ALL of the threads on this page is either about the announcement or related to the announcement. There has never been a news this huge at AVSforum. :)

I think this is the biggest news we've gotten since Paramount and Warner decided to go neutral. Not sure about the biggest news ever though. Maybe.

The news set a new standard and raised the bar for what is considered "big news".

I'd say this was perhaps the biggest punch thrown in this format war thusfar. I'm more surprised at how this managed to be kept under tight wraps.

Assuming that it cost HD DVD 150MM to make this happen, the publicity is worth it. The BDA has probably spent orders of magnitude more with their endless advertising, endcaps, and promotion, and probably have less to show for it than this one brilliantly placed move.
Now that HD DVD can say they have Universal AND Paramount, it utterly negates loads of negative future press about how Universal should just go neutral to end the war. It also frees up MANY fence sitters to now buy HD DVD knowing it will not go away for a long time and has the same possibility of winning as Blu-ray.
This holiday season, who knows how many consumers will buy HD DVD players with the peace of mind of knowing that they have access to TWO huge and famous exclusive catalogs with many iconic titles. As they say, Priceless.
A move that was, IMO, when compared to typical PR and advertising, worth considerably more that the reported cost.
And yet we have another one...

This was big news to the HD early adopters/owners but it was mearly a whisper on news websites and wasn't even mentioned on 2 (NBC/CBS) of my local news channels.
As someone has already mentioned, anyone who doesn't have their pulse on the HD war probably don't care or didn't even hear the news.

I bet j6p heard more about the Blockbuster decision than this one.

Yes, and you managed to add ANOTHER thread!!! Good work, Xboxboi.
I'm not sure you will think back on this day so fondly in a couple of years time, when both formats are niche formats - but enjoy it for now! :)
