Let me think about this ...

The best sci-fi this side of the 70's
High def - I saw bits of this on broadcast HD and it was fantastic
Lossless audio (Dolby TrueHD)

Pre-ordered. Thanks for the link. :D

I'm thinking about picking this up, but I was wondering if I will like the series (I've never seen it at all, but heard good things). I love sci-fi but I'm more of a Star Wars fan than Star Trek, if you get my drift. I also really liked Serenity. Do you think I will like BSG?

The show is brilliant. I really can't fathom how anyone could not like it.

It's neither Star Wars, nor Star Trek. It doesn't really compare easily to either of those.

That being said, it's fantastic. Really, really fantastic. I'm going to take a stab and say that you'll like it. A lot. ;)

I'm doubting it. They may get all of that out before season 4 hits video (thus making the HD DVD day-and-date with standard def), but I think that's the best we can hope for.

Season 4 is starting in January 2008. My guess is that they'll release Season 2 on HD DVD right at the end of the first part of the season (in March/April) and then put out Season 3 right at the start of the second part (in the fall).

As for the Razor movie, I would hope that that would be day-and-date w/the DVD release. But I'm not sure what the plans are.

All of this assumes that sales for Season 1 aren't in the toilet, of course. Pre-order that sucker, baby!

It may all depend on whether or not they sell enough of season 1 to even warrant other seasons.

Newbie Alert! Newbie Alert!
Not a BSG fan.
So would someone help me?
There were/are three TV shows, right?
Or, is it three & a half???
There are movies from the first & second shows, correct?
What is the best BSG? 1st TV, 1st TV movie(s), 2nd TV, 2nd TV movies, or 3rd TV (any movies from 3rd TV?)?
Are all the movies just pilots?
Thanks.

BIG ED -- to clarify, we're discussing the new show, not the 1978/80 TV show. (Which has it's own charms, but that's another topic...)

Given that, there was a 4-hour miniseries that led to a full show. That miniseries is considered part of Season 1.

So, all you have currently is very easy to follow:

Season 1
Season 2
Season 3

Later this fall, they are airing a movie called Razor that deals with a subplot in the show. And then they're airing Season 4 (the final season).

That's it. Just 3 seasons and one upcoming movie (which takes place -- I believe -- before all of the shows, so it can be watched at any point) and then the final season.

Your best bet as a newbie is just to get Season 1 and dive right in. If you love sci-fi at all (or even just good drama), you're likely to love it. I haven't met a single person yet who hasn't enjoyed the show.

Not trying to rain on the parade, but... meet me. The show didn't do a thing for me. Granted, I've only seen one episode, but I think it was enough to let me know that any more would've wasted my time. I'd say it was probably better than 90% of current tv, but that's not saying much and it's still not enough to divert my attention from the rare (and, mostly, older) stuff out there that's really good.

Just MHO.

it's a shame you only gave it one eppisode, you are really missing the most unique show on television... I guess thats not saying much considering all of the cookie cutter dramas out there. Maybe if you gave the mini-series a shot you would really get into it.

I'm willing to give it another shot (and starting with the mini-series is the way I'd do it). The episode I saw just did so many things generically and in an unconvincing tv-show kind of way, it's hard for me to have much hope for it. None of the characters were compelling to me, the plot was a little silly/absurd and it was all weighted down with so many 'mandatory' trappings of a modern ratings-seeking pseudo-sci-fi show that I felt like I've seen a million times. Which is not to say that I have any problem with common genre trappings; I just want something interesting done with them.

BSG has much more of the visceral action adventure qualities of a Star Wars than it does the episodic, classic sci-fi qualities of a Star Trek. Basically the show is a very moving and gritty human drama set in a distant future. Most of the show is zoomed in to the lives of the characters, so it's a lot about them dealing with their situation. And then it zooms out for these really spectacularly done battle pieces, so you kind of get the best of both worlds. You spend a lot of time being intimate with these characters, so you develop feelings for them, and with the space battle scenes you get that epic quality that a good space opera needs. It really is a great show (the first season being my favorite, so I'm very glad Uni decided to release the HD-DVDs in chronological order), and I feel confident recommending it.

I'd definitely recommend giving it another shot, starting from the beginning, and at least getting a few episodes beyond the initial miniseries.

This is an ongoing story, and *not* something that lends itself to the watching of a random episode.

I'm not guaranteeing that you'll like it, but I think starting at the beginning is a good idea.

Agreed. I didn't really get into the miniseries that much - I recorded it for a friend and watched it while I was recording, but it wasn't that great IMHO. I recorded season 1 on the TiVo, but didn't get around to watching any of it until halfway through the season. I watched a couple of episodes, and it started to grow on me a little, but I still didn't love it. Then a couple of more episodes after that and something "clicked" with me -- and it's now one of the few shows I watch. Season 3 disappointed me quite a bit, but it's still pretty good. The first two seasons were very good though.

I knew something was different about the SD DVD for the MS.

Still weird!
BSG (current version order & format):
Movie (released after S1, S2, & S3)
S1: MS & RB (regular broadcast)
S2: RB
S3: RB
S4: RB

Why is S4 the last season?
Any more movies tied into the current show?
Thanks, again.

Thats wrong. Season 3 has not been released on DVD yet. Season 2.0 was split up so that people could get up to speed, there was a 6 month or so intermission in the airing, i.e. Season 2.0 (1st half) was put out on DVD before the second half had even aired. Season 3 had no such interruption and hasn't even been released. When they do it will be the complete season. The HD-DVD releases will be complete seasons.

If someone is interested in this show they can always pick up the minisieries and see if they like it. It's essentially 4 episodes. However there's an extremely high probability that you will be hooked, and impatient to wait for the HD-DVD come this december. Maybe you should just order the HD-DVD set on our recommendation. You could easily find a buyer here if you should happen to not like it.

Pre-ordered btw :)

I really suggest that if you are someone who watched one episode and didn't like it....stick it out. I started by renting the mini and I kind of discounted right off the bat. I felt like some of the fx were cheesie and I had bad memories of the original show. Well a few months later someone gifted me season 1 and I was like oh great that cheap space show. I sat down to watch it with my full attention and I wound up loving the pilot. I will see though the next episode "33" really picks things up.

Hey I just got hooked into this series. I am renting season 1 on HD DVD and I will probably end up purchasing this set. Am I right to understand that this HD DVD set includes the "Miniseries" DVD I see listed on amazon? Also I agree you really need to get through the beginning before it gets really interesting. I watched disc one and was pretty bored. Halfway through disc two and I am completely hooked. This is a great show.

Have any other parts of this series been announced on HD DVD? Also do you think it is best to go ahead and watch the season 1-4 before watching the "Razor" prequel? I figure that is how everyone else did so it makes the most sense.

Yes, the HD DVD set includes the miniseries and you should probably watch seasons 1-3 before watching razor, especially through season 2.
