So after building up my system using Vista, I just couldn't find the right blend of frontend software for my needs, dvd/cd ripping/catelogging, PVR. The only windows software that remotely came close was mainlobby/dvdlobby, but I didnt think the cost/benefit value was for me. So I went back looking at Linux and MythTV and it seems to be more of what i want.

So I burnt the MythDora dvd last night and will be installing later today on this setup, anyone foresee any issues or have suggestions:

Case: Moncaso 932B
MB: Gigabyte P35 DSR3
CPU: E6750
Mem: Corsair ValueSelect 1GB x2
Vid: Gigabyte 8500XT 512MB

Am I gonna have any issues with mythdora? Should I install something different? I was really liking the fact that i could install it quickly, see if its gonna work and if not, drop the $250 on Cinemar software and be done.

Can I assume that my 360 HD drive will not work in Fedora? For playing or ripping?

Thanks for the feedback guys, actually looking forward to being back on Linux.

Wow, a lot less traffic in here than the Windows main forum. Could be a deciding factor for me just based on available help.

It's only been a few hours :) I've asked questions on the windows forum (I use both) that took way longer to get a response.

Personally, I have no experience with mythdora.

A know a lot of people on these forums use Ubuntu. The Ubuntu community pages have great how-tos on myth and associated programs.

It's hard to know what issues you may have without really knowing in what ways you plan on using myth. From what I've heard, mythdora works pretty well.

I think if you get more into it, and encounter problems and with install or configuration you'll get help here. Your question was kind of general.

Best wishes.

If you were planning on using zap2it listings for your guide data you might want to wait since this service is going away next month. A new solution exists for that amount of guide data (schedulesdirect.org), but patches probably are only available via svn right now... and I have no idea when they will be available for mythdora.

I've never used MythDora, but since it's just a prepackaged Mythtv on Fedora Core...if you are asking if MythDora will have problems with your fairly generic hardware, I don't think it will. GNU/Linux is pretty accepting of hardware in general, at least for a basic level of functionality. Maybe you'll need a newer proprietary driver from NVIDIA for your graphics card. Memory and CPU are not going to be your problems.

You don't mention anything about video capture devices (hard to do PVR without those) or remote control devices, which cause far more trouble for mythtv users IMHO than CPU, hard drives, RAM.

What do you mean "360 hard drive"? Windows Media Connect or whatever from your Xbox 360? Mythtv has had uPNP functionality since last December or so, presumably that's made it into the latest rev of MythDora; I think when I tried it with my 360 the 360 wanted me to enter some serial/"key" number from the "Windows Media Center server" so I decided not to bother. My 360 is hooked to the same TV as my mythbox but is noisier than the mythbox. I have an iodata LinkPLayer2 that will play music & HD content from the mythbox via uPNP, but it's also on the same TV so I might as well use the mythtv interface and get the automatic commercial skipping.

For when I am not in that room, there's one really nice Perl script that makes a mythtv frontend easily on pretty much any Mac OS X box. My Macbook Pro (Santa Rosa 15") is now a wifi-HD-playing remote frontend all around the house. The little Apple remote even works with mythfrontend. If I needed more frontends I would think about the new iMacs...

BTW, I indicated in the schedulesdirect thread that the patches are now in trunk so there's no need for extra patching, just normal update and build. I'm beta testing and it's working well so far.

Cool, but who knows how long it will be before those are in mythdora or other distro packages (for those of us who don't build from source)? That's what I want to know (well, specifically I want to know for ubuntu :))

Glad to hear it is working well.

You may be able to use the repository ATrpms for MythDora. The maintainer, Axel Thimm, is pretty good at keeping up to date on things.

According to this ticket, Schedules Direct support was back ported to 0.20-fixes on 8/17/07.

I meant the 360 HD DVD addon drive. Not hard drive.

Not long ago I saw one of the more active members of the forum on www.mythtvtalk.com comment that they seem to get a lot of posts from MythDora users with problems.

I had great luck with Gentoo, though I tend not to recommend it to those not already familiar with Gentoo due to the potential learning curve. People seem to have pretty good luck with Ubuntu in general from what I've seen.

Given the popularity of Ubuntu, I wouldn't be surprized if they were pretty quick to get binary releases out there for the Schedules Direct changes once they're sured up, but that's the problem with binary disrtibutions...you have to wait for someone else to package it unless you start installing from source.

Oh. I plugged my 360 HD-DVD addon into my mythbox (which is FC5) and it wasn't recognized very well IIRC. Possibly that's better in later Fedora releases but then there's still the AACS to "work around" since one of content providers main goals is to avoid anyone with an open-source OS using their content.

Your capture card will matter more than anything on that list other than maybe the motherboard.

Really, you'll just have to try it and see. I'm an experienced Mythtv user. I've been using it since 0.14(?) or so. I've tried basically every iteration of OS and Mythtv release (svn, official ubuntu deb's, atrpms, everything) and so far, Mythdora is the only one that comes close to working out of the box for the hardware i've tried.
