Early Details of Universal Studios' November Wave of HD DVDs

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Pride & Prejudice on HD DVD, this November 13. This title may offer some indication that Universal Studios may be abandoning Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 altogether, for original audio tracks, in favor of Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless. This is a logical move considering that all standalone HD DVD players released to date are capable of decoding and playback 5.1-channels of Dolby TrueHD audio.

The main feature will be presented in 1080p High Definition Widescreen 2.35:1 video with Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (English) & Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 (French) audio options. English [SDH] and French subtitle options are provided.

Bonus materials include:

* Audio Commentary with Director Joe Wright
* Conversations with the Cast
* Jane Austen, Ahead of Her Time
* A Bennet Family Portrait
* HBO First Look: Pride & Prejudice
* The Politics of Dating
* The Stately Homes of Pride & Prejudice

Instant buy. Great news about abandoning DD+ in favor of TrueHD - What good is having TrueHD mandatory hardware support (2 channel, but all STB support full 5.1) when you always include a DD+ track as well - cutting into the already tight bandwidth budget?

Kudos to Universal.

I hope my wife does not hear about it...

Will receivers and decoders that cannot do DD-HD still be treated to a downsampled 5.1 DD track?

My wife has already heard it is coming. :(

Will receivers and decoders that cannot do DD-HD still be treated to a downsampled 5.1 DD track?There are not any such HD DVD players. The receiver does not enter into the picture. If the player has a proper HD DVD logo then it must decode two channels of TrueHD. But currently all HD DVD players will decode 5.1 channels of TrueHD (unless you have a gen 1 Toshiba player that was never updated to firmware 2.0 or higher).

No expectations to see 2.0 channel only TrueHD decode again -- but the HD DVD spec does allow it.

This has made my wife's day! (Which makes mine, wink, wink, nudge, nudge!)

I am pretty sure my wife will want to have this, too, but in her opinion, it's far behind the BBC six-episode miniseries that she watches about every few weeks. Geez, even I memorized half the dialog, and I'm in danger of having that piano intro stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Unfortunately, that one was "filmed" in SD.

This will be great timing for me. My Wife's Bday is the 17th and she watches this one everytime it airs on HBO and it's on our DVR. At least it makes part of her bday shopping easy on me! :)

does anyone local brick and mortar have this ? my wife is demanding of a copy.... and bestbuy.com doesn't show in stock anywhere in my area (or any other sample zip codes I tried). I figured for sure* they would stock this.

we're in Pittsburgh, PA

Please update your location in your profile or mention it your post when you ask which local b&m is carrying something. I lived in the Bay Area, so I can tell by your signature that you're in the East Bay (and not Western Penna).

You live in the Bay Area and buy movies at Best Buy? Why? Anyhoo, check Wal-Mart (the one in Union City) and Fry's. Both should carry it for $19-20.

What is this Pride and Prejudice? Is this a movie about the HD DVD and Blu-ray areas on AVS Forum?

CD Warehouse, (Oakland) Pittsburgh

Pittsburg is a suburb of Oakland, CA. Many people mistakenly add the "h" on the end, so I wasn't sure.

(The same wiki search shows that Pittsburgh, PA has a neighborhood called Oakland. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland_%28Pittsburgh%29 Ouch! :o )

What about Borders or Barnes and Noble? You will pay a LOT (MSRP) without a coupon. (Find a 30% off one somewhere.) I have no idea whether Waldenbooks or B. Dalton carries HDM. Honestly, if you're willing to pay that much, what about an overnight from Amazon, DVDPacific or DVDEmpire?

Two HD-DVD (A35 and XA2 -- soon the Onkyo) players will pass bitstream to the receiver to be decoded. The receiver is still an issue if it's connected to the player via optical. (Quite a few members still do it this way for the cheaper players.) In this case they are getting lovely Dolby Digital not TrueHD. One needs a receiver capable of accepting audio over HDMI or a player with analog outputs for full TrueHD.

Not relating to this thread, but Opus Arte's "Die Zauberflote" does have a TrueHD stereo option in addition to surround.

I'm saved. My wife hates this version. But the BBC version - now that's another story. She watches it every other week. Over and over and over.

thanks for the heads up!

yeh, I was just hoping to buy it B+M and leave it at her computer to find as a surprise this afternoon, if i order it online, she would get the package before me (leaves earlier from work)... I guess that will be surprise enough. I was just expecting to find it today and still surprised I can't. Will Amazon it like I do most of my HD-DVDs and get it by Friday. None of our Bookstores carry HD/Blu except 300, Transformers, and Spiderman in store. ugh, Pittsburgh(the PA one!) is behind the times :cool:
