View Full Version : Considering going neutral

I have considered going format neutral for some time now. I have a PS3 so I have some blu-ray titles. Is there a list of HD-DVD exclusive titles that I can look at to help decide if it's worth the cost to go with both? I am very selective about what I buy (not like when I was fully supporting SD-DVD). From what I have been able to find the only movies I might consider must haves on HD-DVD are...

The Matrix Trilogy (coming soon to blu-ray?)
Bourne movies (though having 1 and 2 on DVD might not push me to purchase soon)
Batman Begins (maybe?)
and now Transformers

There are others I might want to rent but I haven't been able to find an easy list to look at titles that are ONLY on HD-DVD.

Thanks

khwiggins2 , thanks for the link. That's a good post. I did see a lot of Blu there though :) Even so there are probably only about half a dozen BD releases I would buy as well (like I said, picky about what I spend $25-$30 each on).

Seems that you like action movies.

When I am spending that much money I do like a movie that is good on the eyes and ears. Until recently I was all about sound for HT. Of that list there are really only two I would definately want. Top Gun and the Jack Ryan collection. Lebowski would be considered but I could enjoy that movie on a 20" b&w tv :D. Again, others might be rentals though.

No matter what anyone tells you, neutral right now is the way to go. Any HD movie that comes out you can go and pick up, without having to worry about imports or if this studio will go red or blue. Every HD DVD fanboy will tell you there is nothing good out on BD, and every BD fanboy will tell you there is nothing good out on HD DVD. They are all full of it. There are alot of great movies out on both formats, and the real winners are people who enjoy movies, instead of fighting over a disc format as if they have some personal stake in it.

I've been neutral since February. Bought my Samsung BD player with Tax Refund.

THIS WEEK BEST BUY IS HAVING A DEAL: GET 2 FREE TITLES INSTANTLY if you purchase TOSHIBA A2 for $299.00 or TOSHIBA A20 $399.00, plus the 5 free by mail movies.

The 5 free are by mail. Best Buy prints up a reciept with the titles available. All you have to do is select which 5 (which are in 5 groups) fill in your address and mail it to Toshiba. The titles offered include The Chronicles of Riddick, Seabiscuit, U-571, Casablanca, Constantine, Apollo 13, The Rundown, Blazing Saddles, Sky Captain, there are more but these are what I remember. But you could choose 2 right away with this weeks BEST BUY offer. That includes recent titles like HOT FUZZ, BREACH, SMOKIN' ACES, DISTURBIA, 300, TMNT, BOURNE IDENTITY etc.

Here are some lists of HD DVD and Blu-ray exclusives that are easy to read and compare.

This list is for summer and September: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=856401

This list -- though far from complete -- is for the fourth quarter, so far as it has been announced: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=887732

Only 2? Not really worth it for you to go neutral yet I spose. Most of the films I want are on hd-dvd, but there are maybe 10 I want that are blu-ray only, like the die hard collection that is coming out, layer cake and a few others. Just can't justify buying a player just to watch those films though. BTW U-571 is quite impressive in hd.

Its worth it just for the 7 free movies. 5 via mail in 2 of your choise at best buy. Any 2 films.

Do you have a xbox 360? The add on may be a option as well as its $179 now. So you'd get 5 free movies as well..

I f I could afford a dual format player - I would go neutral at this point as well
but I can't - besides HD does have better movies out currently
by the way, why no love for Army of Darkness , it looks and sounds great

Do it, brother. If you like HD media, going neutral takes all the stress away. And with the prices of the Toshibas (along with 5 free movies), there's no excuse not to (if you love movies, that is).

Damn, there are tons of movies exclusive to HD (which is why I chose it over BR initially).

Serenity
Pitch Black
The Mummy
Spy Game
The Untouchables
Shawn and Fuzz

Add to that the new exclusives coming from Paramount - heck, the Jack Ryan collection includes some outstanding movies. HFRO, Patriot Games, CapD (best one actually)... Top Gun...

Just as there are exclusive titles on BR that make it a desirable format. It just happened that I preferred the ones on HD DVD. Actually, it's funny, because the title that put me on the HD DVD bandwagon isn't a very good one. Spartacus is one of my all time faves. The HD DVD is not a noticeable improvement. But there it was, on the shelf. Bought it. Had to get a player to go with it. And there ya go...

BTW, I have _Willy Wonka_ and that is one freaky trip on HDDVD, especially if you never got to see it on a big screen... Though theoretically it could someday come out on Bluray if Warner ever gets around to it...

And dont forget to look at the import's that are blu-ray only but can be on hd dvd other places..

It is silly to buy imports (because they are exclusive) since you are thinking of going dual format. There are a couple nice imports like Brotherhood of the Wolf and Patlabor, but otherwise save your money and buy the native format.

Untouchables was released on both formats on the same date.

I love both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz which has some amazing extras. I'm also waiting for the first season of Heroes next week. I've also considered The Thing, but recall it not getting high PQ marks on the sticky here.

Being a fellow dual format owner I would recommend waiting for more info on V and Batman since there is some speculation on different extras or remastering for the Blu-ray editions later this year.

Besides the films already mentioned, keep in mind that 2 of the biggest summer smashes from next year will be Ironman (Dreamworks) and the Incredible Hulk with Ed Norton (Universal), both now HD DVD exclusives! Hell, if Disney can announce BD releases coming 18 months from now, why not mention these? :p

The Thing looks wonderful! If you love that movie, pick it up today. You won't be disappointed. It's gotten a lot of great notices in here, all I've seen are positive comments about it. Get it! :)

It's SO easy to invest in HD DVD. There are many great pricing deals on hardware. For the life of me, I can't understand why somebody wouldn't have an HD DVD player. Great time to get one right now. Just Heroes, Bourne, Transformers and Battlestar Galactica alone would be worth it, but there are dozens of other movies exclusive to HD DVD

I'll second this, this movie looks great. Is it Hot Fuzz, no, but a fantastic transfer of an older film.

Neutral is good stuff , I would go neutral if i could afford it. But i'm on a limited budget right now (just bought a car) so I can't afford the $600 or so it would cost for a blue ray player. I rather spend that on a 32 inch high def tv later in the year.

I have the hd dvd add on for the 360 and I just watched hot fuzz . The movie is funny , has alot of action and looks amazing , one of the best looking movies on either format i've seen so far. Don't scratch it off your list just yet.

I have shaun of the dead also but haven't watched it yet.

Thanks for all the thoughts (sans blu bashing). Many titles are mentioned over and over and event though I might like to watch them, I just don't know if I would buy them. For instance, with a movie like Hot Fuzz. I would love to see it and just read a great review of it but I don't know if I would need to own it.

I think I will see how my budget looks for the possible Best Buy deal. The list of 5 free movies isn't stellar IMHO but at least it's something. Getting two right away at Best Buy does make it very enticing. Just like getting TN with my PS3. Was it a great movie? No, but it was something to watch in HD. I would really like to go with the A20 for the better upscaling so I can retire my SDVD player.

I'll third it. One of the best horror movies made. And it looks absolutely great.

Although I might be able to afford it. The question is if I should spend $400 on going HD-DVD now. Because I don't buy a ton of HD movies I figured I could wait for something like the Matrix and live without the few others I would want (or watch in SD). With the Paramount news I may decide now is the time (or soon).
