Anthony in NYC 08-21-07, 02:37 PM I will buy neither HD-DVD or Blu Ray. I have stopped caring. I was really excited about the prospect of HiDef DVD's much the way I was really excited about Hi Rez audio formats. After much BSing Hi Rez audio folks convinced me never to buy a Hi Rez audio player. Now the HiDef DVD people have done the same. I can wait for the movies to come on HBO or Showtime and DVR them.
spectator 08-21-07, 02:41 PM Enjoy your limited selection of low-bandwidth, non-OAR, special featureless movies!
David Scott 08-21-07, 02:41 PM Thanks for letting us know.
Mustang1 08-21-07, 02:42 PM Good for you... you do that..
Holy crap, I was waiting for that announcement. The suspense was killing me. Now I can get back to work.
rboster 08-21-07, 02:46 PM I understand folks frustration on both sides of the aisle. But, I honestly don't know why members start threads annoucing their intentions of buying or selling something? Why do other members care (read: complete strangers) if I or anyone else choses to get in or out of a format....or what titles I've bought or going to buy (unless a review is posted)?

How are the LPs working out for you? Still upset about that whole 8-track/cassette tape war?
alfbinet 08-21-07, 02:47 PM You don't see folks who were looking to get a HD DVD player (and still sitting on the fence) changing their minds do you? The only fence sitters that now refuse to jump into the fray appear to be those that planned on purchasing blu.

That's all well and good, man, but what do you own?
hd nOOb 08-21-07, 02:50 PM The only consistancy here is the these are all the Blu ray supporters posting these rants. I have yet to read an HD DVD suporter or even a TRUE format netural person post such selfish comments.
5thDanMaster 08-21-07, 02:51 PM That's all well and good, man, but what do you own?
:D;)
rboster 08-21-07, 02:52 PM I own both...I'm on my second Toshiba and I replaced my Samsung with a Panny. I have 70+ HD-dvd's and 50+ BR titles. I base my buying decisions on PQ/sound codecs, cost and features last (I did break down and paid more for the 300 HD-dvd, when someone posted a $5 target coupon). So I don't give a rat's ass who is on what side of the format war. I posted the samething response to someone on the BR side with a similar "annoucement" I frankly don't care what ppl buy or don't buy....as I would assume grown mature adults don't care what purchases I have or will make

Ian Fleet 08-21-07, 02:56 PM This is only good news for consumers. Who cares about winners anymore, they make too much money anyway.
Now that content is on a equal plane, It will only ramp up the format war bringing in more films, cheaper players, more HD video rentals and more special sales.
Don't be such a fatalist As soon as the right blu-ray player comes in at the right price I'm buying one.

but not 2 different HD Players?
Ktulu_1 08-21-07, 03:06 PM I have stopped caring.
Stopped caring about what? Optical disc formats? Who cares? If you cared about watching movies in HD, you would buy one or both format's players, a couple movies, maybe a little popcorn, a beverage or your choice, and enjoy the show.

How bout you buy a nice tall warm glass of shut the hell up!
cheezycheech 08-21-07, 03:14 PM it's a good idea. let the fanboys fight it out on forums and studios double dip going from exclusive to neutral and then back to exclusive again. i commend ms for throwing the monkey wrench in the mix and using consumers and CE mfg's as pawns to slow the HDM arena so it can be dl'd fairly easily via paysite or illegally. this will definitely happen. no confusion there as there will be no players to buy and no retail optical media to burn for consumers in the future. eventually, this will be a shift of media content moving away from CE mfg's of hardware devices and helps build the infrastructure for download content that ms wants in the first place. phone/cable companies will be very happy. sony and apple have same intentions. however, optical disc, at this time, is a tangible device that consumers feel there is value. this is why we all buy rather than download. we can see it, touch it, feel it, and own it. this move has segregated hd supporters even more and we are on our way to how music media is obtained in the present. it's good or bad depending on how you view it. as for friends and family, i would not put them through this confusion, the headaches, and $. i will continue to buy bluray and won't defect until i have to. there's always still sddvd. going neutral will just add more fuel to the flame. we're in for a long war and i don't think anyone of us will win by the amount of money we have to shell out. what a shame...
CPR Jose Ortiz 08-21-07, 03:18 PM If recent events would of favored Sony; There wouldn't be a thread like this.
Stop crying...Do some push ups!

No need to be rude. I try not to be rude to people, especially if they are named Anthony and from Brooklyn. But hey, that's just me. When you make immature comments like these, you end up being just as childish as all the other fanboys.

When I make valid points they are dismissed. Which leads me to believe that the jokes, drama and controversy is what feeds this thread and some of this site.
Again. If Paramount would of been Blu Ray exclusive there would be no thread.
But. HD DVD gets a leg up and everyone is loosing their mind like Michael Bay.

Yeah, that has been my experience as well at times.

I don't understand your point. Why would you let others convince you to do anything? Why don't you buy a player and try it out. If you don't like it return it. If the idea of denying yourself the pleasure of next gen movies appeals to you then go right ahead and stay on the sidelines. To each his own.

I hope you have no fun watching standard dvd's ;)

At least AVS hasn't dedicated it's own special forum for people to post in when they switch sides (LIKE High Def Digest does).
But then again, it might be a good idea to have that here to. That way, we can avoid having to see those threads here in the HD-DVD specific forums.
Maybe we should add Smackdown as well, so we can avoid seeing Fanboy FUD in the HD-DVD forums.
That would be the only reason I would want those forums. Simply to keep the BS Crap FUD away from the forum I prefer.
Doom4420 08-22-07, 11:54 AM Aww man, just get both. Who cares?? I can't stand all of these people whining that they will just sit on the sidelines till whatever happens. Your loss. I'm enjoying 2 hd dvd players and a PS3. You have fun with your upscaling dvd player and delude yourself into thinking it looks close to HD.:D

You know, I have to be honest, I've never really figured out the hype that the high res audio got. Quite frankly, I'm not overly convinced that even if there'd been a single format that it would have succeeded. Why? Because I'm pretty convinced that at least 90% of the people out there wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it and a cd. (And quite frankly, I think a significant number of people that claim they can might be deluding themselves). Now, I'm not saying nobody would be able to tell the difference, just that it's a very small segment of the market. And to be honest, it's one reason that I personally aren't overly concerned about whether the HD movie titles are coming out with lossless audio. Because once again, I think it's only a very small segment of the market that will ever be able to tell the difference.
Digital Man5 08-22-07, 12:54 PM He posted the same thing in the BR forum to similar responses. Why he feels anyone cares is beyond me. That would have been better suited to another section of the forum.

Well I didn't want to seem biased. This was a decision against both Blu and HDDVD.
Thanks for the truly intelligent responses everyone. Your Posts in general seemed well thought out and full of good information. Good to know that I can count on you AVs'ers to handle things maturely.

techstar25 08-23-07, 10:40 AM I think the OP is an example of somebody who drove themself crazy reading all the FUD on boards like this.
For the most part, everybody who picked and format and bought a player has been happy with their decision. I don't know about you, but for $299, the HD DVD player isn't so much of a financial risk anyway. And if you pick Bluray and get a PS3, worst case scenario is you end up with a awesome gaming machine.
You can really drive yourself crazy by reading all the FUD. You just have take it all with a grain of salt.

Look, the first thing you need to do is step back and realize that both of these formats are more similar than disparate. The PQ of one is for all extents and purposes identical to the other (Obviously so when identical encodes are used). Ditto for the sound. There appear to be legions of "shellshocked" Blu-Ray fans on these forums acting like they've been robbed of a grand HD "legacy" after the Paramount announcement, and it's just not so. Put down the Kool-aid and read up on the HD DVD software and hardware threads, and you'll realize that most people are very happy with what this format provides. And you can be too, for a lower cost of entry than Blu-Ray to boot. Or if you don't have the stomach to dive into a format war, then wait it out. But please don't be fooled into thinking that HD media is going to die a slow painful death simply because Blu-Ray may not become the defacto standard.

Does anyone actually own either format to enjoy movies?
Apparently not. Everyone just buys things to help boost companies' market shares. And the bigger collection of movies that people actually have no opinion on before buying, just proves what a cinema lover they are.
Hey, let's organize a buy day to skew the top 100 at Amazon...
I am also going to stop buying hd-dvd and bluray. Back to ole reliable dvd.
