View Full Version : Bioshock Gameplay tips and help
Arutha_conDoin 08-21-07, 05:57 PM If you have any tips for this game I'd love to hear them. The gameplay of this game is just incredible. To many choices to choose from. What did you do with your first Gene bank upgrade? Do you save the sisters or harvest? I'm going with saving the sisters. I guess I am not as mean as I thought I was.:D
Beware of potential spoilers to the game..
The gravity gun rules agains (err...plasmid in this game).

Telekinesis is pretty nice against the bomb throwers. I got a 3rd plasmid slot so that has helped. The ice plasmid is pretty fun. My only problem is I am having troubles hitting enemies with any plasmid. I just seem to be off just a little bit.
On another note the first present from the saving the sisters was a pretty nice gift.:
200 Adam plus a Big Daddy control plasmid:eek:
dbburns 08-21-07, 07:33 PM I can't find the incinerate plasmid where it was in the demo (the ladies room in the Kashmir). Should it be there? Or does it show up later in the retail version? I'm going to proceed for now and hope I stumble across it. I've noticed that the trash cans have more booty in the retail version and that the diary of the guy complaining about the stink coming from the bathroom into his theater was in a different spot.
mixtapem 08-21-07, 07:37 PM when are we able to buy additional slots for plasmids? im at the 2nd little sister and looked at the gatherers garden but did not see additional slots for plasmids so i increased my maximum health

you get the incinerate later in the game. They did change a few things around from the Demo which was nice.

I didn't find my extra slot for plasmids until I reached the Neptune area.

vanilla rice 08-21-07, 09:47 PM does it really freeze for a few seconds at a time like on the gamespot review?
Mustang1 08-21-07, 09:51 PM does it really freeze for a few seconds at a time like on the gamespot review?
lol no... I noticed no freezing like that.. it plays smooth for me.. even with the framrate thing turned on..
KlDesigns 08-21-07, 09:54 PM How many different endings are there? What difficulty level is everyone playing on? What effect does saving sisters have on the actual storyline?
I'm playing on HARD ... Quite challenging but fun.
Ive messed myself up already (LOVE the game BTW!). Ive just barely beaten my 2nd Big Daddy and im surrounded by splicers. I have no first aid kits left and cannot find where the little sister ran off to! Im hoping that one of the splicers didnt kill her...

I was playing on hard, but switched to medium. It was taking way to much ammo to bring down the splicers!
Those Big Daddy's are PITA to bring down.
rtweezy 08-21-07, 10:32 PM does it really freeze for a few seconds at a time like on the gamespot review?
I've had it freeze up maybe twice or three times in 6 hours of playing. The best way to describe it is like lag in a multiplayer game. I think this may have to do more with the console than the software. I think mine is on the way out.
I am really enjoying this game, however i don't think I'm too good at it. It takes me around 4 or 5 respawns to kill a Big Daddy. I have been killing all the little sisters. I need all the Adam I can get.
dbburns 08-21-07, 11:00 PM I am playing on Medium.
I have not had any freezes, but there are sometimes where my point of view will "jerk" to a different angle, if that makes sense. I'll be looking at something and walking towards it, and the next thing I know I am looking in a slightly different direction. It is a little disconcerting, but it does not happen that often.
I didn't find my extra slot for plasmids until I reached the Neptune area.
I bought an extra plasmid slot at the Wharf. I believe it was where she left the gift for saving the sisters. I think I bought another one there after the gift as well.
Chevron07 08-22-07, 08:08 AM Gotta say, I'm thinking about turning it down to medium. Hard is just a bit overwhelming to the point that all I'm doing is running around looking at the ground hoping to see some ammo glittering. Those nurses look like they'll be easy, but I think I hit one with about 4 shot gun shells, and she took me down with three shots from a pistol.
I'm having trouble aiming the plasmids also. They have a big circle recticle, but it feels like you have to be dead center pin-point accurate to score a hit.

Wow...I'm glad I went with Medium from the beginning.

Yea I wished they would have made the plasmid reticle the same size as the gun reticle. I'm also surprised there is no tracer on the fire plasmid either. I really have a hard time to see where that is going and that is usually well passed who I was trying to hit.
Anyone else notice a few pop ups on this game? I swear there were times were I was looking at something and then a second later writing would show up. It just feels the game isn't streaming fast enough at times. It doesn't detract from it to much though.
OK...I've taken care of the big sisters in the Medical Pavilion, however I didn't melt the ice near the funeral home entrance and I already replaced the Incinerator plasmid with Telekinesis. :o My question is, am I missing a way to replace the Telekinesis with Incinerator on this level??? I didn't see any Gene Banks and I'm about to go over to Neptune.
newfmp3 08-22-07, 09:55 AM does it really freeze for a few seconds at a time like on the gamespot review?
I'm thinking that the gamespot's 360 is really the issue and on it's way out. I've seen ZERO pausing, freezing or framerate issues.
I'm really surprised gamespot even mentioned it knowing how flakey the 360 is. They even went so far as to mention that it happens after long gaming periods....DUH, heat builds up, 360 starts freezing. Not a software issue as far as I'm concerned. Damn MS and their crappy hardware.
cfmustang 08-22-07, 09:58 AM You don't get the first Gene Bank till Neptune's Landing. I did the same thing, so I went back to the Medical Pavilion from Neptune's to get through the ice. Man, am I glad. That Funeral Home section behind the ice is really creepy...especially at midnight when the house is dark and quiet.
I am in the same boat as some others. I have about 4 or 5 plasmids now, but only two slots. I don't see where you can get new slots.
StreetPreacher 08-22-07, 10:02 AM Yep, same problem here. Lot's of plasmids but no slots for them yet...

Thanks, man! I was just concerned that I wouldn't be able to make it back to the Pavilion after going to Neptune. I'll have to play through the funeral home tonight...when its dark. I'm already scared!:eek::p
mathism 08-22-07, 10:24 AM I bought 2 slots from some machine over in neptunes, I think. They went for 100 adams each, if I recall correctly.

I've seen some longer than usual pauses when hitting a button for an action such as entering the hacking screen, or upon gaining a new plasmid, tonic, etc. But none of that has been that big of a deal.
slyderulz 08-22-07, 10:29 AM If anyone has any tips on battling the Big Daddies it would be much appreciated. The one thing I don't get it the 'stun' move they do...where they charge or even just get close to you and they either hit you physically or hit the ground with their drill and it stuns you. You go into 'slow-mo' and you're a sitting duck...is there any way to avoid this?
My other question is can you view what Gene Tonics you have equipped without visiting a Gene Bank?

Same here. They laid the smack down on me the first few times and I don't know if I even got any shots in. Even after I beat the first one I just remember thinking, "These guys are TOUGH."
I've begun keeping my distance as best as I can and I've tried some hit and runs, but its definitely not easy. They definitely require you to tilt the environment/combat area to your advantage prior to fighting them.

I didn't see any Gene Banks and I'm about to go over to Neptune.Damn. I didn't even notice a doorway, let alone that it was blocked by ice. I was wondering how to access that lower part of the map on that level. And I walked back and forth along that wall four or five times trying to see what I was missing. Yet the ice-blocked path in the dental area was a no-brainer for me as to how to bypass it. :o Guess I'll be making a return trip as well after switching back to Incinerate.
Man, this game is fun. I played for about four hours last night and didn't even come across the first Big Daddy/Little Sister (well, aside from the scripted event in the theater that was also in the demo). I know there are some coming because the map says there are two in this level. I've cleared out the rest of the medical area (except where noted above; damn you ice) and am about to enter the surgeon's wing. Can't wait.
methos75 08-22-07, 11:16 AM I have found that zapping the big daddy and then blasting them with Buck shot works pretty well, blasting them with the electro Buck Shot does even better. The best thing to do is zap and shoot and then move, and just keep repeating and constantly moving so they cannot get to close.
Teamhood 08-22-07, 11:17 AM I got my butt kicked by the first big daddy... I just don't know how to beat that first one so I peaced on it.... Playing on medium, the game is great and I am really enjoying it.

I hear ya. I kept looking at the map thinking that I didn't see a door on that wall. Only when I looked very closely did I realize that I probably needed to use the incinerator plasmid to open up the entry way.
Also, if you want a tip for the surgeon's wing check this out below...
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Hack ALL the bots and the security camera in that area before moving onto Dr. Steinman. Let them do the work.
Teamhood 08-22-07, 11:21 AM Re: Little Sisters
If you choose not to harvest any (100 point achievement) how do you get more adam's??
On the medical level, there was one room I wasn't able to enter because I didn't have some key it said I needed... I don't remember exactly what it said (I didn't want to stand around in front of the locked door for too long because I was getting pummeled by a turret). Anyone have any ideas where to get that key? Otherwise I was able to beat that level and move on to the next level... but I'm still curious how to get into that last room.
Also, did anyone else have a problem with Big Daddies respawning on the medical level? I killed a big daddy, then I went down the stairs to buy some health from a machine I had hacked, then when I came back upstairs there was another Big Daddy. So I killed him, went downstairs to buy some health from that machine again, and when I came back upstairs there was yet another Big Daddy... So I just ran around him to the exit :)
Re: Little Sisters

You can either harvest or rescue the little sisters. Both will give you adam's, but harvesting them will just give you more than when you rescue them.

Good point. Its one of the dental office's, but I couldn't find anyway to get in. I thought it might have something to do with me getting into the funeral home, since I missed that room as well.
And yes, I had the same problem with the NUMEROUS Big Daddies. I thought it might be me or something so good to know that you also have the issue. I killed the first, and the second, and then just started walking by the third. They don't appear to bother you unless you attack them first.

I found shotgun + incenerate (or armor piercing pistol rounds + incinerate) seem to do decent damage. The problem I have is there seems to be almost no way to avoid getting hit/stunned. I actually had a few battles where I backpeddaled around the plants in the Medical area, once in a while the BD would get stuckon the other side and I could do some decent damage. Another thign that allowed me to get a few shots in was getting them as they were walking down stairs while I stood on the other side of the railing. They just react so fast and once the are enraged they almost seem faster than you, one missed step and your a gonner. It almost makes me think that a side-roll type move (ala- Gears of War) would have leveled the playing filed a bit. That would at least give you the chance to avoid getting hit if you times it right.
With the Vita Chambers this doens't keep you from progressing...it would just be nice to have a strategy that could keep me from having to respawn 2-3 times to knock the BD off.
Anyone know if there is any other way to view your equipped Gene Tonics without visting a Gene Bank? I couldn't find anything in the pause menu or by holding the Left bumper button (plasmids only).

This is one of the reasons I spent four hours running around and didn't even get to a big daddy. I kept going back to places I had been to looking for Chomper's key. It is actually inside that room. I had to shoot the terret to keep from killing me. Stand in front of the broken window the splicer is halfway through, and use telekinesis to bring the key to you.

Wow, thanks. I have to keep reminding myself that it's not your run-of-the-mill FPS and I have to be creative and innovative. This is a neat game.

cfmustang 08-22-07, 01:15 PM Actually, I have found telekinesis is handy for picking up all sorts of stuff (EVE, first aid kits, ammo) while staying out of the sight of turrets, cameras and splicers. You'll also occasionally find stuff hidden in the various cracks and holes in walls if you use you telekinesis on them...
Kind of like Luke Skywalker using the force to get the lightsabre out of the snow while hanging upside-down in the ice cave.:D
I love that you can be so creative in this game.
the red worm 08-22-07, 03:26 PM I'm at the last boss fight on hard difficulty.

the red worm 08-22-07, 03:43 PM nevermind, game finished
mrkrispy 08-22-07, 06:27 PM I got the game from Gamefly, played all day with no problems yet. I just got the camera, still trying to figure out how to tell if I have photographed people before.
I still haven't found an efficient way to kill the Big Daddios, electro-shot does okay. If you get a Rosie model telekinesis is must.
TIP: If you lost track of the Little Sister, don't quite kill the big daddy. They will walk around to one of the portals and pound on in until another Sister comes out.
Yung Impression 08-22-07, 07:42 PM Does this game ever have ya'll scared or jumpy?..
Dark Helmet 08-22-07, 09:09 PM Telekenesis works extremely well for killing splicers.Just toss a trash can or something heavy at them, even dead bodies. You can also use things as a shield in front of you to absorb bullets and such.
mrkrispy 08-22-07, 09:11 PM damn I just realized this doesn't have multiplayer, I thought I read it was gonna be... oh well.
chris5977 08-23-07, 04:13 AM I'm impressed at your guys killing the Big Daddies in two or three times. I've tried to kill them about 50 times and just can't do it. I'm getting ready to give up on the game.

Once you've improved your plasmids and upgraded your weapons, fighting Big Daddies is a joke. Remember that you don't have to fight them right away, and that you can backtrack and fight them later.
KlDesigns 08-23-07, 07:18 AM Does anyone know the KEY differences between MEDIUM and HARD difficulty setting?
I just noticed it its harder to take down enemies on HARD. When I was going to switch from HARD to MEDIUM it said it will affect my achievements. If it affects the achievements I don't really care.
The difficulty settings don't affect the storyline or ending?

What is the most effective combination? Also, dumb question. Once you freeze one how the heck do you shatter him? Do you use the wrench?
Speaking of "Mr. Bubbles"...I don't remember exactly where I was but I had just dropped a few splicers I looked out the window and guess who I saw? A Big Daddy was casually walking around out on the ocean floor. I laughed. A perfect example of some of the details that make this game exceptional.
Arutha_conDoin 08-23-07, 08:37 AM Re: Little Sisters
If you choose not to harvest any (100 point achievement) how do you get more adam's??
If you save the sisters you get 80 Adam while if you harvest you get 130 Adam.
I elected to save and after saving my 3rd sister I got a gift of 200 Adam as well as a plasmid for making a Bid Daddy your protector. I think in the long run it is going to pay off to save the sisters.

D@MMIT, good point....I figured out the telekenisis for the key, after about 30 minutes of wandering.....but I couldnt figure out how to get into a room with blocked doors to get an ammo pack that was sitting there. Telekenisis!
Also, about the respawning big daddy's in the medical pavilion. Has anyone kept killing them to see how many show up? I made it up to 3, and was hoping to get a secret achievement or something but nothing.
I have 90 achievement points after finishing the medical level. Has anyone been able to get more? What about some of the secret ones, any of them during the medical level? Im playing on hard and Ive been searching every square inch of the place.
Teamhood 08-23-07, 11:14 AM I played a bunch last night and had to put down the controller. I def. am enjoying this game and I now off looking for the camera!!
BTW: Thank you to whoever helped find that key in the Medical level. I spent a lot of time trying to find it and never thought to look where the turret was kicking my butt!
I am stuck a bit now because I have no cash, few bullets, and no health and Mr. Bubbles keeps killing me...

You can crouch down and avoid the turret, break the window to the right of it, and crawl through to hack the turret.

I'm playing on Medium. I've killed 3 Big Daddies with a variety of the Incinerate (light 'em up) then either a nearby buck shot to the head, or using the machine gun and pump him full of lead. Nothing else seems to work, I tried the armor-piercing bullets but the 6-shooter loads too slowly, and the bullets don't seem to do a lot of damage, or at least quickly enough

Machine gun bullets do a pretty good amount of damage. I'm playing on Hard, and I killed 3 of them last night...usually dying twice in each battle. I have been enraging the person around Big Daddy so they attack him first, then I open fire with the machine gun. I also have the electrical tonic equipped so when he hits me, he gets electrocuted, and I fire more on him while he's frozen.
chris5977 08-23-07, 11:23 AM Thanks for the tip. Somehow I've ended up with the power of Telekinisis and Electroshock. How do I get the Incinerate power back?
I really don't understand how to manage the different plasmids and I don't understand what Adam is.

Sounds like you're still pretty early on in the game. You will be able to use Adam to purchase more plasmid slots. Adam is what you get from harvesting/saving little sisters.
Thrillhouse17 08-23-07, 11:38 AM The easiest way to kill Big Daddies (on medium). Fully research them, which gives you a +++ damage boost against them, then unload 2 clips (8 shots) of upgraded shotgun ammo. They go down super fast, and usually only manage to hit you once or twice.

Hope this doesn't sound stupid, but how do you research them? I just started the second level and I am looking for the camera... do I need a camera to research?
mrkrispy 08-23-07, 12:17 PM the camera enables you to research every baddie, you can research them a full 3 times (not 3 photographs!). The fastest way is to take a photo of a bad guy attacking you, and don't take multiple photos of the same person. I.E., take 3 photos of 3 different Leadhead splicers.

When do you start researching? How do you research? I havent started Neptune yet, if its in that level, just say so and I'll figure it out ; ) You arent able to "research" in Medical though right?
mathism 08-23-07, 02:31 PM You research by taking pictures. It will be fairly obvious when you get to that part. I forget what section it was in though, and I don't want to ruin anything :P

It was in one of the dental rooms of the medical pavillion. A cloud of fog or smoke filled the room, blocking my vision, and then I heard someone running around the room. I just started swinging my wrench like crazy, hitting nothing. When the smoke cleared, someone was lying on the table. I couldn't recall if they were there before the smoke came, and I kept waiting for them to jump at me when I got near them.
The next one really made me jump. Again, the room filled with steam/smoke but the room was dead quiet. I was picking something up from a desk or cabinet, and when I turned around, there was a splicer right in my face.
Good times. I am hoping for many more instances of frights.
I also get scared when a bunch of splicers come at me at once. :o

OMG, the second one you mentioned nearly made me shat myself! It was completely dead silent too and I just non-chalantly turned around and there he was just standing there
It was in the step down area in the water, and I was searching the desk, and turned around and they were standing above looking down on me.
Thats the first time Ive really ever been startled like that playing a game!

HA! I'm glad it wasn't just me! How about the part in the medical pavilion and you're downstairs and you pick up the shotgun for the first time and then the lights just go out? And then a ton of splicers show-up while its still complete darkness!! My shorts were wet after that one. :p

Yep,that one was really creep, it was almost like a battle arena was setup. The other one still startled me more though!
dbburns 08-23-07, 03:26 PM Yes! I think they were nurses. And why did stragglers keep going to that sign kicking it and telling it to work. I think it was a sign. Maybe it was a busted vending machine. But it is where you find the shotgun. Kind of the lobby of the dental offices area. Everytime I came out from another dental area, there was someone new milling about that sign/machine talking to it.

Yeah. I thought was was weird too. I kept looking around there to see if there was some secret that I should find, but I never found anything.
TimothyB 08-24-07, 12:50 AM I find the telekinesis very useful. It allows you to turn other enemy weapons into your own. Like those Nitro Splicers, at the first Big Daddy I kept the guy alive to throw gernades to then redirect at Big Daddy.
But even that is a small reason. I was surprised, even on hard setting, throwing a body (plenty of those) will kill a splicer in one hit. And it with it only taking like 1/6th the EVE to do that, it's very effective compared to the fire plasmid.
When I get home from work I'm going to have fun with my new plasmid. The one that tricks bid daddys into thinking you are a little sister. Now that's much better than hacking those flying bots :)
LAKE4742 08-24-07, 07:06 AM Yeah, the splicer being right behind me definitely made me jump. Also, seeing the little girls eyes in the hole on the wall spooked me. It only happened once so far. They should have done that more often.I just finished MEDICAL PAVILION. I went through the first 2 levels extensively and encountered nothing having to do with the camera for research,so I'm sure it's ahead and I can't wait!! This game is great!!!

Luckily I had a shotgun already equipped, so when I turned around, while surprised and creeped out, he wasn't standing there for long :)
Don't worry, the camera is part of the story so you won't miss it. I just got it and it seems interesting. Usually the first good A grade shot completes a full research, which gives you a tip on them and increase damage. Then you can do it again on another splicer of the same kind, but it won't complete research, you'll have to take several more photos for it to finish and give you more things. Taking one of the same person will result in a penalty points in the research amount you get.
MartyKM72 08-24-07, 08:24 AM Anyone notice the splicers running to a medical machine and healing themselves up! Once I notice that, I hack all medical machines so they cannot use them, I love the AI in this game.
Teamhood 08-24-07, 09:10 AM The AI in this game is really amazing...
Well, I stayed up way to late last night (dragging this morning with some nice bags under the eyes) but I was able to save all the little sisters in Neptune and I am just about to meet up with the guy who has been on the radio with us. Neptune is a sweet level and I really enjoy taking 'action shots' (i.e.: throw my body out there to get shot at to get a photo) for research.
I am in love with this game... I still love the Mr.Bubbles comments that the Little Sisters make.
Great game!!
HDTV_ME 08-24-07, 12:26 PM Question, I'm just about to leave Fort Frolic, but I have a rule about leaving no room undiscovered. In Posiedon Plaza, there is a staircase leading to a small lower level, but it's blocked off by a metal grate and I see no switch or keypad to hack. Is there a way to get in there now or will I be coming back? I tried freezing the grate and whacking it, but to no avail. If anyone knows what I'm talking about and has found a way down there, let me know.
PS Spoiler Alert: I killed Sander Cohen, did anyone else?
dbburns 08-24-07, 12:50 PM I know the metal grates you are talking about. I am trying to get past one in the Lower Wharf to get some loot. It looks like there is ice in front of the grate I need to get into, but Incinerate won't melt it. I tried whacking it with the wrench. I should have tried using Telekinesis to hurl a grenade into it, but I killed the grenade splicer before that thought occurred to me.
So yes, if anyone knows how to handle the metal grates, please share.

Maybe you need incinerate 2? The description says the second one you throw makes it hotter? Might be a clue. I don't know.
dbburns 08-24-07, 01:11 PM I just read a bit of a walkthrough, and it looks like the area I am talking about will be available after I speak with someone named Mr. Peach.
Jeremy Anderson 08-24-07, 01:35 PM Here's a question: Does anyone know how the hell to get Sander Cohen's Muse Box? I did everything he asked and he said something about if I was a true disciple of his, he would share it. So I thought maybe I had to kill him to get in it... but that's not it either. Any clues?
As a side note, I just got an Onkyo 705 last week... and after the Audyssey MultEQ XT setup, the bass coming from my SVS 20-39CS+ combined with my Buttkicker LFE is making this game a blast to play! When the Big Daddy comes around, the freakin' room shakes. And the RPG sentryguns may be the most brutal sounding rocket launcher I've ever heard in a game. It almost feels like it's hitting you in the chest with bass. Good stuff!
mpalmieri1203 08-24-07, 01:46 PM You can use the key by hitting A on the first cylinder. The one with the plasmid inside and the combo lock....I have no idea.

I hear you. A great HT system really makes this game unbeatable. Using a DIY Sonosub with bass shakers in 7.1. Sounds fantastic.

Chevron07 08-24-07, 04:49 PM I'm really loving the machine gun now that I got a Power to the People upgrade. I was primarily using the shotty and almost upgraded that, but I'm real glad I decided to make a lame gun better. Now I have two "go to" weapons.

I upgraded the machine gun as well. I chose to upgrade its power, but I think maybe I should've done the reduced kick. It has both anti-personnel (for splicers) and anti-armor (for big daddies) ammo, which makes it very versatile. Playing on hard, it's much faster to take down a splicer with the machine gun & anti-personnel ammo than using the shotgun.

Oh I missed System Shock... BioShock does remind me of SS from time to time.
(May be someone will remake SS/SS2 for 360/PS3 like what they did with DOOM? Please? :D )
mpalmieri1203 08-24-07, 06:22 PM Anyone figure out what to do with the grates that can be opened. I'm trying to back track into areas to get everything I can and I can't open a few metal grates.
mpalmieri1203 08-24-07, 06:29 PM I'm pretty late in the game so read at your own caution

Although I have to be honest I don't think I will have the nerve to run through it again. I have never dedicated so much time into a game since beating Half Life and Tie Fighter.
mpalmieri1203 08-24-07, 08:18 PM Well I just beat it. Ended rather abruptly but I found the ending very enjoyable. I decided to save the little sisters within the game. Really an excellent game. Any word on the movie? hehe
KlDesigns 08-24-07, 09:34 PM Which Plasmid should I dump for the Telekinesis? Electroshock or Incinerate?
Which one will be needed more in Surgery Foyer? If I don't pick up Telekinesis now can it be found or bought later on in the game?

incinerate then buy a 3rd slot and add it later
KlDesigns 08-24-07, 09:51 PM Thanks for the info.
ferrisg 08-24-07, 09:53 PM I dumped Electro Bolt at that point. It's harder to fight robotic things, but much easier to fight Splicers with Incinerate. Most of the time it gets them off your back for a few seconds, or sends them running to a health station (that you've hopefully hacked). This is on hard difficulty, where the shock then whack method does not work. On the lower difficulties it's probably better to keep Electro Bolt.
LAKE4742 08-25-07, 07:37 AM I just reached ARCADIA,which I'll play later tonight.I wish I had some helpful tips for others, but it seems everyone is ahead of me anyway. One question though:Should I just keep snapping away pictures of everyone to complete the research? It seems to be an A,B,and C level. So just continue taking pictures to fill those up? Replies much appreciated.Actually I really just wanted to profess my love for this amazing game...again.Genius!!!!!!
Not good:rolleyes:Not very good:eek:GENIUS!!!
AstroTravellin 08-25-07, 08:22 AM Yeah, just keep taking pictures until you get the "score too low. picture not taken" message. I don't think you'll ever get the research maxed out otherwise (there are 3 levels of research for each enemy). Also, don't forget to take pics of turrets, bots and cameras. I didn't know I was supposed to be doing that too until over halfway through the game. Hacked/friendly machines don't give points so take pics prior to hacking.
LAKE4742 08-25-07, 08:30 AM Thanks.I realized I'm supposed to research the bots, turrets, etc. You can max out the research though, because there's an acheivement for it.One of the those secret acheivements should be for exploration. This is the first game in a long time to make me want to explore every nook and cranny. And,why would all those crates be highlighted for looking into, only to be empty? Unless there is a reward for doing so.
KlDesigns 08-25-07, 10:04 AM Where do I find the extra slots for PLASMIDS? I'm in the beginning of the Neptune level and there is a GENE Machine that allows me to swap/rotate plasmids around but no way to buy.
After saving the very 1st Little Girl there is a purple machine that allows me to purchase items with ADAMS. What should be my first purchase with ADAMS. Or should I save my ADAMS for something better later in the game?
Do I have to kill every single BIG DADDY that I see on my way? Does killing or sparing them change the ending in any way? Well does BIOSHOCK have different endings? I love the variety of choices to solving problems.
LAKE4742 08-25-07, 10:33 AM The machine to purchase more slots are on that level. If you haven't realized, you need to look EVERYWHERE.There are so many secret rooms.Do that and you'll find EVERYTHING.Also, spend your ADAMS.The items are great and very useful. You don't have to kill the BIG DADDIES unless they're guarding a LITTLE SISTER.Otherwise,it would BE WISE to stay out of their way. They will walk around and look in each hole-in-the-wall for a LITTLE SISTER.On second thought,I just realized 1 of the secret acheivements could be for killing all of 'em.Damn!

I didn't find anything too useful in the first Gathers Garden machine after the frist litte sister. I didn't care about rage plasmid, and all my other tonic slots were full and usefull already. I think I just went with a health upgrade at that spot.
The choices that could have a different ending was clear at the first girl. Atlas was encouraging you to just harvest (kill) the little sister, while that lady was pleading with you to save them. If you choose to save every one, you'll get a different ending than if you killed them all.
So after killing two more big daddys and saving two more big sisters, and a nice reward from that lady, I bought a new plasmid slot, eve upgrade, and the freeze plasmid. One thing I don't like about the freeze plasmid is that if you shatter them, there's no body left to search for health or ammo.
Like someone said, killing every Big Daddy doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless there is a girl with him. Unless of course there is an achievement, but what if they are just randomly spawned. Depending how you play the game, you get a plasmid that lets you only turn Big Daddys into your friend for 5 minutes or so, never timed it, and then again and again. Even one with a little sister.
Question: One thing I was hopping for when opening a new slot was it would do so in every tonic slot. When do we get to upgrade those slots and I hope it's not as much as a plasmid slot.
mrkrispy 08-25-07, 03:52 PM I am about halfway thru the game. My biggest tip so far: don't be frugal with cash, spend away. The wallet gets "full" at $500, I find myself buying ammo I don't really need.
When you start running in to more Big Daddies it is worse, they all drop around $100.
Also, I can't seem to ever use more than 3 hypos of EVE or First Aid, always plenty to find.

Yeah, but I'm careful with what I spend since you I need certain types of ammo to take down big daddys and other enemies and I hardly use vita chambers so I do get low on first aids and eve now and then, especially with big fights.
eatenbacktolife 08-25-07, 05:57 PM You can upgrade those other slots in Arcadia, which follows the Neptune level. I think they cost 80 adam.
the red worm 08-25-07, 08:32 PM none of the secret achievements are for killing all the big daddies, and the big daddies respawn
if you've saved the little sister that they usually gaurd they will mope around the hallways and bang on the walls near holes that little sisters usually come out of. They keep look for a little sister to gaurd.
ZyronEnder 08-26-07, 01:20 AM I managed to finish the game (awesome, awesome game) there's only one area I couldn't find my way into and that was a small room in Sander Cohen's appartment. Anyone know how to get in there?
I'm kinda hoping that one of the secret achievements relates to having completely explored the game. Also, I have to admit I'm surprised that I didn't get the "Listened to all audio logs" achievement. Damn, I thought I was pretty thorough. If I'm lucky there's one in the Cohen room...

Now I'm in Arcadia and now I am not so sure I can go back to the previous areas I have been.

Yes. Just keep going with your missions and you'll get to the bathysphere again. I just went back and finished the little sisters that I left in Neptune's Bounty after saving the forest.

Go into the liquor store next to it (if you're looking at the grating, just turn around). It's called something spirits. There's a button on the end of the counter in there. That opens both the door in that room, as well as the grating.
Here's a hint for others, but it spoils a pair of secret achievements, so I'm going to tag it:
Save before you fight Sander Cohen. Allow him to talk and walk down the stairs, he won't attack you. He'll open up the glass cases that are locked nearby. If you kill him, take his picture for an achievement. If you don't, you'll be able to get into his personal quarters later in the game, which also triggers an achievement.

I used the friend plasmid on the BIG DADDY,and he took out COHEN for me ,but I'm pretty sure his body disappeared.I did go into his quarters.I have the "completed masterpiece acheivement".Did going into his quarters give me that acheivement,or is there another acheivement I should have received?

His quarters are in his apartment, a couple of levels later in the game in the Olympus Heights area. I'm not talking about the locked projection booth where he is hanging out earlier during the Fort Frolic level.

Teamhood 08-27-07, 10:59 AM Quick question: I just left Arcadia and went to the Farmers Market. Will I return back to Acardia? I know that there were a few room's that I didn't explore and I just wanted to make sure that I will be heading back after the market!
Also: One of the rooms that I didn't explore is like right when you walk in. I see it on the map and it has doors but doesn't say you need a key or anything. I want to say it is located in the Tea Garden, but I can't be 100% on that. Anyone know what area I'm talking about?
I've been playing on Easy and it is well pretty Easy. Shotgun + electro buck shots work well on the Big D's. It does damage and stuns them.
dbburns 08-27-07, 12:21 PM **Possible spoilers about the Arcadia Level**
I am on the Arcadia (Garden) level currently. It is my least favorite level thus far. Granted it is still early in the game, but for some reason I find it gets confusing figuring out where all of those red arrows are pointing to on the map. Plus there are brown areas on the map in the middle of white areas I am in, and I can't always find the door to those small areas, or I find them but can't figure out how to open them. I have noticed that doors that were blocked by vines have "burned" open after Ryan killed the trees in the level to cut the oxygen supply. Now I am trying to find a rose for some lady so she'll fix the problem.
Is this the worst level in the game? Or is it just me? I am hoping that there are no levels after this that I find to be worse. I guess I just find each "room" in this level pretty much exactly like the last, whereas the Medical and Neptune levels seemed to have some variety to them. I am still early in this level, I think, so perhaps once I am in the Metro it will improve.
Still a great game, though.

It's a tomb. It has two torches next to the door. One is lit. Use your Incinerate plasmid to light the other one.

I have noticed that doors that were blocked by vines have "burned" open after Ryan killed the trees in the level to cut the oxygen supply. Now I am trying to find a rose for some lady so she'll fix the problem.
I'm not sure any other level has quite so many areas you just inexplicably can't explore until a story even happens. Get ready for an ever increasing number of red arrows on the map, though.
It definitely gets better. Fort Frolic is awesome. You might not like Olympus Heights, though. The only thing about Arcadia that really annoyed me were the crazy nature worshipping Houdini Splicers. They were difficult to take down at the point in the game on hard difficulty.

mohanman 08-27-07, 08:45 PM Hey guys I almost finished the Bounty level (second level), haven't open the freezer yet to continue to the sub yet. I noticed that I killed three big daddies, but only rescued one girl because the other two ran away by the time I approached them. Is there a way to go back and find them again, or should I just go on?
Thanks

The Big Daddies will respawn and pull another Little Sister out of one of those holes in the wall. You will just have to wait. If I were you I'd go on the the next level and revisit your current level a little later. The BD's will be a little easier once you level up a bit as well.

A tip: Wait for her to start sucking adam out of the splicers. Once she takes adam she will not run back into the hole. Then feel free to take out the BD as soon as possible. I really hope we get some DL content for this game. Any word on that? I loved it....but I beat it to fast and I have almost completed every achievement in the game. It is so intense I can't see myself being able to play this one over and over...not something I expected. I will howver hang onto this game for my collection..which I normally don't do after I beat something. It's a game you demo your system with!

You start over fresh each time.
ferrisg 08-28-07, 12:06 AM In case any of you haven't figured out, you can equip all 3 levels of a tonic at the same time (taking up 3 slots, obviously) for some big time extra effect.
dbburns 08-28-07, 01:06 PM I am the one who complained about the Arcadia level a bit earlier in this thread. I did enjoy it much more once I had to find things (rose, nectar, water).
I am currently in the lower level of the wine cellar in the Farmer's Market. There are six huge wine casks along one wall (the western wall if you are looking at the map). Three of them are grayed out on the map, and three of them are brown, leading me to believe I should be able to break at least three of them open. There was a wrench lying on the ground, so I thought that was a clue on how to bust them open, but it didn't work. I tried shooting at them (one of them already had bullet holes in it) and telekinesis. I don't remember if I tried incinerate. Has anyone gotten into these barrels, and if so, how?
Teamhood 08-28-07, 11:32 PM Question about little sisters no spawning. I just met up with Cohen after finishing all those goals and took the tonic that I won and chose not to kill him. I still have one little sister left and I sat there and followed two different BD's around and watched them knock to try and get a little sister out, but she never came...
Any idea what I should do? I guess I can move on, but I hate leaving an area before I have everything accomplished!

I just finished that level last night and took out all three BD's w/ LS's as I encountered them. Maybe you are just following the wrong one. I'd try to leave the level and then come right back to it and see if that helps reset it.
BTW that crossbow really makes the BD fights easy. I saw one at the bottom of some stairs and set up about five or six trip wires along the stairs. Lit him up with an incenerate from the top of the stairs and he ended up right in front of me stunned with hardly any life left. One shotgun blast finished him off.

Did you play it on hard? Im playing on hard and feel like Im going through at a snails pace. I put in 3 hours last night on Neptune and I'm not even through the level. It was taking me forever to kill the stupid big daddies, I still dont know a good combination. I was using incinerate and either machine gun or shotgun. Anyways, thanks for the tip on the little sisters. I was getting very frustrated last night as on two different occasions I endured a 5 minute big daddy battle, only to deplete all my resources, finally kill him, then little #$#@# sister runs away like a little girl  On a couple other occasions, they didnt run away no matter how long I took, which your explanation explains.

Thanks for this link. Does it tell you the location of all the diaries? I can't open it now because I'm at work and they both sites like these but I will look at it tonight when I get home.
I finished the game last night on medium but I obviously missed a few diaries because I didn't get the achievement. No big deal, I'm not an acheievement whore, but the diaries were an important piece of the story. I was being extra careful by exploring every single room.
Hey, at least I have an excuse to play the game again. :)

terryb28 08-31-07, 08:21 AM First a disclaimer: this is absolutely my favorite 360 game, so don't get the wrong idea. Having said that, is it me or is each level, from the Medical Pavilion to Arcadia, progressively less interesting visually? The intro. and first level of the game blew me away from an art design perspective - the sort of New Year's apocalypse - but Neptune was a little less interesting, and likewise, Arcadia was slightly less impressive than Neptune. I've just started the Frolic level, which seems to recapture some of that earlier magic, but does anyone agree or disagree with my earlier statement?

I see what you are saying, but I think some of these areas were intended to be this way (the hideout). Personally I like the variety and even though the variety might have a toned down graphical/artistic direction in places, each area still has details of things to find, nooks, puzzles, etc.
I guess it is just really tough to find fault in this game. So much is done right and it is just plain fun and interesting. :)

I was less than impressed with Arcadia initially. I started enoying it when I went on the gathering missions in that level and got out of the redundant garden areas. I, too, am in Fort Frolic, and I am loving the environments again. I didn't feel Neptune was worse than Medical, but Arcadia just seemed kind of blah to me.
* possible weapons / plasmids spoilers ahead *
Okay, so I'm curious -- question for everybody -- what's your favorite load-out or weapon of choice, and why?
I'm nearly finished with Arcadia / Farmer's Market, which is still pretty early in the game, I think (I hope :))... I find that most of the time I walk around with Telekinesis "armed" and ready to go. It's great for picking up health & ammo just lying around, and when I'm suddenly in a battle, there's usually something I can grab and throw at a splicer (hopefully something explosive like a barrel or oxygen canister)...
So I'm curious, which weapons does everyone else use most often? It's great there's so many different ways to approach this game!
Tenkaipalm 08-31-07, 05:42 PM Electro bolt, and the Pistol with the Anti-personnel Ammo. Just about every splicer is weak against AP ammo, and with research maxed out (or near maxed out) it'a a wrap. Hit with electro bolt, headshot with pistol=swift death. Splicers get so ridiculously easy with this combo it's a joke. I use telekinesis if I want to conserve ammo.
And get your research up, people. Keep the tonic that increases research damage bonus. Right now, I can kill a Big Daddy with a mere two trap bolt lines. I have also found Electro bolt+Electric Buck is a great combination of dropping Big Daddies, especially with the Plasmid that increases electrical damage.

After upgrading the machine gun fully, it was easily my favorite weapon. Except for Big Daddies. There it was grenades followed by the electro shotgun ammo.
My favorite plasmid was Incinerate, especially once I got level 3 (fairly late in the game, though). It killed enemies very quickly. Although, without trying to spoil too much, Incinerate was much less useful against foes for a big chunk of the middle of the game than it was in early and late sections. Remember that with Incinerate you can hit an enemy multiple times, taking off health each time and accelerating how quickly their remaining health depletes. This makes it very powerful. Also equip the Human Inferno tonic and get even better results.

What difficulty level are you playing on? I never found splicers to get that easy to kill on hard. That's a very effective strategy, but it wasn't a single shot, and they were very aggressive once they un-stunned after you shot them once.

Hard. One head shot drops them to zero health with AP ammo I guess because I have spider, thuggish, and leadhead splicer research maxed. If per chance I miss the head shot, I switch to the bolt and zap them again and repeat. Spider splicers and thuggish splicers are easier to me since they have to be close to hurt you. I can usually kill them before they get close to me, unless they overwhelm me with numbers (then it's napalm time). Leadhead and Houdini Splicers are tougher because they can shoot back from range. I don't use that strat for houdini splicers though, since my research on them is lower. I usually incinerate them, since they stay on fire even after they teleport.
KlDesigns 08-31-07, 06:10 PM My favorite weapon of choice is Telekinesis and dead BIG DADDY.
I think I killed 2 or 3 splicers at once when I threw a dead BIG DADDY at them. =)
Tenkaipalm 08-31-07, 07:21 PM Another combo I like to use is incinerate 3 and electrobolt 3. Light 'em up, and them shock 'em so they have to stand there and take the damage. Incinerate 3 does some insane damage very quickly.
terryb28 08-31-07, 08:49 PM maybe not my favorite, but winter blast has to be the most effective. freeze and then a shotgun blast to the head takes out most splicers likety-split, researched or not. has the same effect on anything mechanical. almost makes the game too easy. yes, you don't get items from dropped foes, but if you play your cards right with money and purchases, it's not a problem.

Im still a ways back in the game, but can someone explain to me how they get into the hidden room in the very first part of Arcadia? Its in the very first large open area, there is a door with torches on each side, one of which is not burning. I was thinking somehow freeze or put out the other side and the door would open, but I cant get anything to work.
The area behind the door looks like its very small, but Im willing to be theres a goodie or two inside if its this tough to get open. Thanks for any help.
bryansj 09-02-07, 10:12 AM Just finished the game yesterday on medium and got all 960 achievement points. Now I'm playing through on hard and I'm up to Neptune's Bounty. It's nice to not have to focus on getting all the diaries and whatnot for the achievements. My exploring on round two is just to stock up on supplies.
Anyway, a little tip that I don't think I saw mentioned. I found myself hacking those healing stations, but hardly ever using them or using them as a trap to hurt the enemies. If you take out your wrench and destroy them a first aid kit drops to the ground. So if you don't think you will need the station then you get yourself a free kit. Also, if you cleared out the area and are backtracking then by all means destroy them on your way out.
Another tip for getting all the achievements. This one contains spoilers so only read it prior to doing the last mission before The Proving Grounds.
After you become a Big Daddy and prior to summoning a Little Sister save your game and hop into the Biosphere to pick up the remaining research, little sisters, tonics, diaries, and weapon upgrade stations. The key here is that as a Big Daddy the enemies and security measures will ignore you. You have free reign of the game with the only drawback being that you are looking through the Big Daddy diving helmet. There are no diaries or tonics in The Proving Grounds.

FreeBaGeL 09-03-07, 01:14 PM Does this game ever have ya'll scared or jumpy?..
One of the parts down in the medical pavilion really made me jump for the first time since the Licker jumping through the two-sided mirror in Resident Evil 2.
It was some back room, you step down into the water and start walking towards some alcove. On the wall you can see a shadow of someone around the corner in the alcove, moving around slowly. As you get closer the lights turn out and leave you in total darkness. I turned around and high-tailed it back where I came from. The lights eventually turned back on and I walked into the alcove again....empty....no one there. Freaky. So I pick up the supplies and walk back to the room I was in before and a splicer jumps out of one of those things that stores dead bodies. I guess the splicer had crawled through it from the alcove to the other room. Scared the crap outta me moreso than any videogame or movie ever has.

I got all achievement except for the one for playing on hard in one run so it wouldn't be impossible. You just need to know to save the little sisters and then find all the tonics, diaries, and weapon upgrades. The tonics can be tricky because after I bought the last one I only had 70 adam and I never bought the swarm one or the target dummy plasmid. I think I got lucky with having 70 adam left and I'd think that would be the biggest problem with getting all the achievements in your first run.
Chuck12 09-03-07, 09:08 PM Although this might be a little late for some people:
If you want to get the achievement for all the diaries, make sure you get the 3 before you turn off the self destruct in the rapture control level. You cannot go back to this part of the game, you would have to play though again.

What made you think to do the two secret achievements involving Sander Cohen? These are the two I think are most difficult for a single run, since they're not obvious. Getting them both also requires saving the game, killing him, and restoring the game, which doesn't really count as one run through to me. Closely behind is the collect all tonics. That's if you want all in one shot. If you play through once on easy or medium to do the others, that's not that hard, but it also doesn't count as one run.

The Cohen achievements are all obtained by not killing him in Fort Frolic and waiting until you get to his apartment. There was no need to save, kill, and restore. You don't kill him in Fort Frolic, he shows up later at his apartment (achievement), you kill him and take his picture (Irony achievement), and then use the Power To The People machine (weapon upgrade achievement) in his apartment. Then you simply move on. I will admit that I had heard to not kill him in Fort Frolic so I didn't.
Also, I did say that I got lucky with having enough Adam left to purchase all the required tonics. If you didn't waste any Adam by buying all the plasmids (swarm, target dummy, and all the level 2 upgrades) then it shouldn't be a problem. Which reminds me of another tip, skip the level 2 plasmids.
ChemEng 09-04-07, 07:59 AM Im still in Neptunes Bounty level, but was able to take out a Big Daddy in a novel way. There was an RPG turret across an open area. I hacked the turret. Then the Big Daddy came through and I opened fire with Electrobolt. The Bolt stunned the Daddy while the RPG turret put some rounds into him. I just kept him stunned with the Bolt and the turret finished him off.

ferrisg 09-04-07, 11:06 AM What's with the ending? Is this guy a pimp or what?!
Seriously?
He had no family. He took the Little Sisters out of Rapture and raised them as his daughters. They loved him & were all there for him right up until he died of old age. I haven't seen if there's a "bad" ending yet, so I can't say what happens there.
dbburns 09-04-07, 02:35 PM Edited: Sorry, I didn't think I was giving more away than was already mentioned openly in another post in this thread.
***Cohen Achievements Spoiler Alert***
Yeah, you can get both Cohen achievements on one run-through by doing what the above poster spoiler-alerted out. I don't know why I've seen several people on other help threads say you want to save in Fort Frolic, kill him, reload from save, don't kill him, and continue on your merry way. Just get both of his achievements when you get to his apartment. I will also admit, though, that I accidentally read not to kill him. I am glad I did learn that. Although I am not sure I would have killed him anyway since he never attacked.

I think you are SOL. There is a tonic guide at gamefaqs.com that will help you pinpoint the one you are missing. You can always reload a prior save and knock out the achievement. Maybe the one you need isn't a purchased one since you also have to find some and invent a couple as well as get some from research and saving the Little Sisters.
dbburns 09-04-07, 03:13 PM I've saved all Sisters and fully researched everyone. I am not sure I've ever invented a tonic. That could be my problem. I don't recall having an opportunity to invent a tonic. What supplies do I need? Guess I'll do a Google to see if I can find some recipes for inventable tonics.

I think it is Bloodlust, has to do with gaining health by using a wrench. Not sure though.

I just got that last night by inventing it at the first U-Invent in Fort Frolic. I think there were 3 tonics listed, though, and I picked blood lust. After that the other two were grayed out, though I'm not sure if it's because I didn't have the right ingredients or if it was because you could only pick one.

Aristotle 09-04-07, 04:37 PM This game was meant to be played on a PC IMHO. Being able to run and shoot and quickly make your way out of dangerous situations is MUCH easier with the precision of the mouse and keyboard. Also, the graphics are better on a a high end rig. (my friend has the XBOX 360 version on his 65" lcd)
Playing this game on hard level with the lights out is scary tough! :D

But since you brought it up, I'll respond. I used to be a keyboard and mouse fan, myself. Now I prefer the dual-analog stick controller for shooters. Opinions aside, I really don't understand what the so-called "precision of the mouse and keyboard" is that you're referring to. You're implying that the dual-analog-stick controllers are somehow less precise. And that's simply not true. Using the dual-analog-stick controller, I can point my aiming recticle to every place that I could while using a mouse and keyboard. How is a mouse and keyboard more precise?
In fact, I contend that the dual-analog-stick controller may actually be more precise than a digital keyboard for player movement. Using a keyboard, there are usually only two speeds for player movement. "Walk" and "Run." But with an analog controller, there are many more speeds at which the character can move within the game, which allows for much smoother and more precise movement than a digital keyboard.
The only advantage that a mouse has over an analog-stick controller is the speed at which you're able to turn or aim your character. However, after a short while practicing with the "controller sensitivity" set a little higher, a competent gamer can achieve "looking around" speeds that rival those of a mouse. That, coupled with the distinct advantage of the dual-analog-stick controller for player movement, is why I now prefer it to the old keyboard & mouse control scheme.
I got 47 of 50 achievements on the first run. The ones I missed where involved in the spoiler related thing (apartment and weapon) and hard difficulty. It's stupid I couldn't get the first too, but stupid like every other game. It's amazing how you can have a grenade launcher, shotgun, or your foot but you can't get by a wooden door.
Great game and those two achievements won't bother me much as I go to get the last achievement for hard difficulty.
AHDTVDiet 09-04-07, 09:37 PM I didn’t even consider buying tonics there was so much else to buy. I guess I will have to get that achievement on my next go through. However my next go through was going to be on "hard" which doesn’t seem conductive to achievements as I imagine I will be ducking and running a lot. Other then the tonic the other achievements I missed were research Bouncer and little sister, and thus the over all researcher one. I forgot I had the camera for a while and by the time I remembered it was too late to get everything. I went back and got the research on some of the others I missed but all the little sisters were already saved. This achievement I need to make sure I get on Hard though so I have the advantages the research gives. I can't believe I completely beat the game without having hardly anyone researched (except the machine gun guys) but I did.
Best way I found to beat the Big Daddy. Use the security alert on him... or the hypnotize Big Daddy, have him fight for you and watch him lose health. Then when he gets about half or more down in health let him stop fighting and find a Little sister. Once she is clear of the hidey hole lob a couple of proximity mines at them and he should go down. Armor piercing machine gun bullets or exploding shot gun shells work pretty well to.
Unless your short on cash or just bored never fight a Big Daddy when there’s no Little Sister around, it’s just a waste of time there is no secret achievement for killing lots of them. Also, be careful where you aim and\or be careful getting hit while next to a wandering Big Daddy if you have the Static Discharge tonic on, if you do him damage of any kind he will get a bit annoyed and attack you. Sadly he doesn’t seem to get quite as annoyed with the splicers, though the Daddys do occasionally slap a few out of their way when walking around.
Oh, my last tip is don't use Rage on a Big Daddy...use it on splicers near the big daddy so that they attack him and he kills them. If you use it on him he will kill the splicer and then look for someone else to beat down and I have found 9 out of 10 times, its me.

+1
I made the transition to the controllers after years of the keyboard and mouse setup. I do miss it at times, but that is more from trying to get my stick sensitivity set up right. It is also more of a mental thing too. Moving with the stick seems way more natural now then having to hit the WD or WA keys to move in a diagonal. The only thing that puts me off on some FPS for consoles now is not being able to map the buttons the way I want to. The Medal of Honor: Airborne Demo comes to mind about mapping. Fun Demo, but their controller layouts don't impress me much.
dbburns 09-04-07, 10:48 PM OK. I found my last tonic and beat the endgame. Now I need to play through again on Hard to get that last achievement and harvest the Little Sisters so I can see what happens when I'm "bad". It must affect two parts of the game, at least.
bryansj 09-05-07, 07:21 AM However my next go through was going to be on "hard" which doesn’t seem conductive to achievements as I imagine I will be ducking and running a lot.
I'm finding that Hard isn't as hard as I thought it would be. Once you know a lot of the tricks and when you are going to get attacked things aren't really so bad. I say this as of the beginning of Fort Frolic. For instance, I remembered after the Cohen speach at the beginning when you leave the area with the bathysphere there are a lot of trip wires placed and you get attacked by 5 or 6 spider splicers. I armed my explosive rounds on the shotgun and stayed in that room, as they funnelled through the door I was able to take them out in one to two shots each one at a time. It didn't go that smooth on medium the first time through.
LAKE4742 09-05-07, 10:29 AM Seriously?
He had no family. He took the Little Sisters out of Rapture and raised them as his daughters. They loved him & were all there for him right up until he died of old age. I haven't seen if there's a "bad" ending yet, so I can't say what happens there.
OMG! I'm such an idiot. lol. Thanks for the clarification.
Ok, so I'm loving the game however this whole research thing has me beat. For some reason I have not gotten any research achievments and I have been taking pictures like a mad man. What gives, what am I doing wrong and how does the A,B,C rating factor into it? On currently on the Arcadia level.
Out of curiosity have people been using their ADAM to buy health and EVE boosts or have people been putting it towards getting more plasmid and tonic tracks along with more plasmids and tonics to fill those tracks. I always have a hard time deciding what to get. Right now I have bought 1 extra of each type of tonic track and have purchased 3 (I think) plasmid tracks.
Any help or suggestions appreciated.

LAKE4742 09-05-07, 08:32 PM Your doing fine. Take action shots with the camera to recieve the most research points. Always take shots with whatever attacking you right in your face. Look directly at the cameras and turrets when their alarming or shooting at you and get closeups, same with Big Daddies. I always had more tonics and plasmids than tracks (because they're less expensive), so I suggest maxing out the tracks first.
Thanks for the tips. I'll keep snaping away tomorrow :)

I upgraded all 3 in first run at medium and got the achievement. I'm playing on hard and do I need to upgrade all 5 to the max or just the missing two that I played on medium. Are there enough WEAPON UPGRADE Machines in the game to upgrade all 5 Weapons in one RUN?

Yes there are enough for one run, but you can only get them all by getting into Cohen's apartment (see spoilers in this thread). All the others you can find by exploration.

A tip for getting easy action shots without loosing health in the process:
Get your freezing plasmid ASAP and optionally equip a couple of those photography tonics if you have the room. Freeze your enemy when they are attacking and then just snap away. Make sure you get up close and centered for the most credit. Also, take as many pictures of BDs and LSs as you can, especially the Little Sisters because they won't respawn after you save them unlike the BDs (possible exception in spoiler). If you need more Big Daddy research then go back a few levels and photograph the respawns. Also, freeze turrets and cameras and take as many pictures as you can prior to hacking. Freezing them also slows down the flow rate while hacking so that's a double positive. You can also take pictures of security bots that are spawned by your hacked cameras, but you can't take pictures of security bots that you have hacked. So when your hacked security camera spawns security bots be ready to snap away.
I'm not sure if the Little Sisters at the end of the game can be researched or not since my research was maxed at that time, but this might allow you to get the achievement.
Awesome, thanks for the tips.

RodDude, you have plenty of time to max your research if you are still in Arcadia. I didn't max all of my research until I was in Olympus Heights I believe, maybe even not until Point Prometheus. That is several levels further into the game than the one you are on. Its not hold the A button when it starts. Its something like hold both bumpers or hold both triggers. Can't remember which. He you hold both while the game is starting and until it says press start button. After he did that he said the game ran flawless.

The door on the right is where Cohen appears after killing those two dancing splicers. You kill Cohen and take his picture (achievement), walk through the door (achievement), and use the Power to the People weapon upgrade maching (part of an achievement). If you killed Cohen in Fort Frolic then you don't get a chance for the last two. Since both of the cages are locked it sounds as if you did, he unlocks the one with the combo lock and tonic inside. You loot his key and can unlock the other cage.

I don't know how you could confuse Cohen. He literally comes waltzing down the stairs there and I don't believe there was anyone else around at the time. Getting him confused with someone else would be hard to do.

I didn't confuse him. When I had the Big Daddy klill him, he disappeared. So I thought that was him dancing. I want those achievements really bad. Now that the stuttering is fixed, a second run is inevitable. Altough that game called HALO 3 might take up alot of time.:D

I don't really see it as a plot hole. The Vita chamber in his office is disabled, which could mean one of two things. Either they have a limited range so he wanted to make sure he really died, or he wanted to make sure he was revived at another spot, so that he could more effectively fake his death.

How does that explain all the deaths of characters described in audio diaries? Or of splicers? I think they should've gone with a checkpoint save system. Maybe only activated the vita chambers on easy difficulty or something.

Maybe the vita chambers are only active for people with Ryan DNA. So they dont actually work for anyone but you and Andrew
EDIT: Um yeah, what the guy above me just said.
I just finished the game yesterday. I played the "hard" level first time through. I did not have a strategy other than collecting as much of the research items I could find. I have not even checked my score yet. But a couple of really helpful hints I can pass along for the final level.
1. Max out medi-kits and plasmids even if you have to go back and scavenge for money.
2. Most importantly max out on "electric gel". (Found it to VERY effective)

2. Save game. Start gambling.
3. Reload when you're broke.

I got it quickly and easily, which surprised me. I don't know if there's any trick or not. I just immediately did it on the machines to the left when you enter Fort Frolic. Saved and started with around $250. Was up to $500 quickly and hit the jackpot after 5 minutes or so.

I've had the same problem with this in Bioshock and in other games (particularly Madden and NCAA Football). Just a matter of time before I move on to console #3.
I have been continuing through at a steady pace and as I was leaving Fort Frolic I ran into a glitch in my game. Just before I depart a message comes up stating that I have not rescued or harvested all of the little sisters in the level. The thing is, I have. Fort Frolic has 4 little sisters and I rescued all four of them accodring to the little sister icons when I pause the game, rather than see the little sister behind a big daddy icon, I have 4 icons with little girls' faces, meaning I have rescued all of them, correct? I also remember rescuing all of them and have not run into any since I rescued what I thought was the last one, there are indeed a number of big daddies on the prowl now pounding away looking for the little sisters but as expected they never appear. Is there any way to correct this? I have shut the console off and went back into the game but no luck. I'm thinking because of this I will not be able to get the achievment later on for dealing with all of the little sisters.
I'm not impressed especially if I have to load a really old save in the game to successfully register my 4 rescues.

Arutha_conDoin 09-12-07, 02:58 AM Well I finally beat the game tonight on Medium. Damn fun game as I played through it. I ended up with a 675/1000 for achievements which is ok I guess. I missed one power to the people machine in the game.
One tip I would recommend is to have at least 1 save on each level so you can go back and try to earn some achievements that you may have missed. I missed the casino one which probably would have been fairly easy to do if you have enough money. I'll most likely being playing this one through again on the Hard setting and try to get the achievements that I missed.

Samstag 09-12-07, 10:22 AM Does anyone know if it is possible to go back to the Medical Pavillion? I am just about to finish Fort Frolic and I noticed I missed an audio diary back in the medical area. I tried backtracking, but I got to a point where (I think) I couldn't go back any farther. Do any of the bathyspheres allow you to go back that far?
Thanks,
Robb
You can go back to the medical pavilion, but there are two diaries at the very beginning you can't get to. I think they were Diane McClintock's new year's story and the hole in the bathroom, both from the Kashmir nightclub.
I'm pretty sure all the other diaries in the MP are still available.
I heard about this glitch on Neptunes Bounty, I guess it exists on Fort Frolic also. This link gives some insight to what to do.

I think a note about it is in this thread as well ....
Cool, Thanks for the link. Very interesting, so there was only supposed to be 3 little sisters in Fort Frolic then and when I found a rescued a 4th it triggered the message I am seeing. So the 4th little sister was actually the glitch. Oh well, according to the info in the link it doesn't seem to affect the outcome of the game with the expection I guess I now have more Adam than would normally be possible. Nothing wrong with that :)
This bring up an interesting point. When I was in Arcadia after I rescued the first little sister and watched her go up into the hole and I continued on my way and came back through a little later and there she was again. She said a few things (I can't recall what) then just ran into the same hole, there was no big daddy with here just the corpse of the one I killed to rescue her.

Cool, that's good to hear. When I realized I missed a diary I did try to backtrack, but I couldn't remember how to get back to a certain area. I'll give it another go this time now that I know it's possible.
NoThru22 09-12-07, 12:50 PM You may not be able to backtrack until you beat the level and get to the next bathysphere.
Scott Simonian 09-13-07, 02:15 PM Need some help fellas...
Ive beat the game before and dont need any tips. But now I have run into the skipping/stuttering problem after reading this thread.
My friend owns a X360 and thats how I got to play it. Played smooth and ran like silk. Then I read this thread and saw people had problems with stuttering and lag. There was supposedly a way to defrag the game/system. I asked my friend who owns the 360 about it and he said that he could do the system defrag by holding A while booting up. Didnt really look like anything happened so I tried doing it in the game too. Held all the triggers and bumpers before the main title came up. Now the game stutters like mad...almost unplayable. He was going to keep this game forever and now its pretty much broken. Stutters every few seconds and its really annoying cause it ran perfectly with ZERO stutters before.
Ahh...so I dont blame the thread at all....it was my idea that I brought to his attention, so I take full responsibility.
Any advice on how to fix it since the defrag might have made it stutter now?

Theres another thread about it somewhere, but just clear the system cache. Easiest way, from the Xbox startup menu, click to play the game disc and immediately hold both left and right bumpers and dont let go until after the 2k logo has completely disappeared. Then let go. It cleared all of my games stuttering problems.
The holding A way is how to clear the Cache playing Oblivion and possibly a few other games.

Hmmm....thats exactly what I did yesterday (no stutters at all before) and then after that the game would stutter almost constantly. Should I tell my friend to repeat the procedure and maybe that would fix it? Ill let him know...
newfmp3 09-16-07, 09:29 PM ok, i started getting the lag that everyone talked about. I tried clearing the cache and stuff which didn't work at all. Luckily I am one of those gamers that makes a LOt of gamesaves. So for kicks I loaded up a earlier save not to far back from where it started stuttering, and sure enough, problem resolved.
Go figure.

What area did it start stuttering at? I got bad stuttering after reading this thread when I was in Olympus Heights, but once I left the area there was no stuttering.
Arutha_conDoin 09-16-07, 10:15 PM I never did the update on this game. whenever I booted it up and it would come up saying there was an update I would say no. Although I do wonder if the patch would help fill in some textures that seem to take a few second to pop into the object when you first see it.

Fort Frolic. 3/4 of the way through, meaning I had all but 1 photo left to take for that psycho guy. . I was just outside the casino area. Haven't seen the lag since.
I thought about trying to go back to another area to see if reloading the level would get rid of the lag as well, but I never bothered...too far to walk :) I'll try that next time to.
Pink Floyd 09-18-07, 07:11 PM I may have a problem, and I'm not sure if it's a glitch or not.
I just received the incinerator plasmid, and now I cannot change back to electricity. It clearly says in the book and in the game that to switch plasmids you should hold LB and cycle through (just as you would with guns w/ RB)...Needless to say, this isn't working. Does anyone know what is going on?????
Pink Floyd 09-18-07, 07:19 PM Okay, I just received my telekinesis and it's letting choose between plasmids. However, now I am wondering if somehow it let me pick the incinerator over the shock, and now I lost it. Would this be possible??? If so, I'm screwed.
AHDTVDiet 09-18-07, 07:28 PM Early in the game you are limited in your plasmid slots. You have to get Telekinesis to move the story along so you have to drop incinerate or shock. No worries though since you will be able to change back later when you get to one of the machines that let you switch between the plasmids you have picked up. Plus you will get to purchase more slots.
The only bad thing is that in that medical section incinerate would really come in handy but so does shock and well like I said you kind of have to have Telekinesis for a bit so you have to make a tough choice. I stuck with shock and telekinesis but then couldnt get into one of the rooms until I came back later.
Pink Floyd 09-19-07, 07:47 AM Thanks for the help. I was worried for a minute that I wouldn't get it back, but just like you said I am early in the game and can only carry two plasmids. Anyway, I just beat my first Big Daddy and reached a machine to get my zap back. great game so far!
hotdogwater2 09-19-07, 07:28 PM FYI an easy way to get (camera) action shots is to use the rage plasmid -- not only do you get a bonus for action, you get one for multiple enemies in the same picture. It's kind of nice taking pictures in a splicer's face while they're fighting another one. :)
LR6AGB001 09-22-07, 03:19 AM I just rented the game and at the very beginning trying to locate Dr. Steinman and I switched to telekinesis and left the electric shock projectile. My question is how can I get back to that menu and switch back at will?

Read post #245
I have a question (I may have missed it in this thread). Ive got a certain level that there are 2 little sisters left and no big daddys (hit pause and it only shows the girls faces and thats it). Is there anyway to still catch them or am I screwed because they arent walking around with a Rosie?
