Hey everyone. There is a... thing I've noticed for quite awhile and I don't even know how to search for this topic, so I started a new thread!

In another part of the forum, someone posted this image taken from upconverting SD DVD on a brand new XBR4 (using a Sony BD player to upconvert):

If you notice, there is a "band" at the very top of the image. There is a similar one at the bottom of the image, but the top really shows it off. I notice it much more when the background is whiter than blacker. Here's a close up of what I'm talking about, blown up 4x and centered around the top of the stand up base:

It's that hard edge I'm talking about. Now, the movie "Walk The Line" is shot in 2.35:1 aspect ratio and the TV is 1.85:1, right?. I notice this even on an old SC CRT TV as well for anything that's not 4:3. Is this the DVD players? The TV? What is this effect called? And of course, most importantly, how do I stop it?

Like many on this forum, I'm bugged by little things like this, and I know someone out here knows a way to stop this. I just hope it costs less than a grand! (I can always hope)

Thanks for your time.

I've also noticed this on my DLP on different DVD players. I assumed it was the TV itself (hls5087w). It doesn't bother me much but if there is a way to get rid of it I'd definitely be interested too.

Just looks like EE to me ... be it the TV doing it or on the disc itself.

Yup. Not uncommon to see on DVDs. It also can be the chroma bug(CUE), you can see that especially sometimes if the topmost (or maybe it's the second line down I forget) looks like it is in black and white, basically it's missing chroma info since it's wrongly getting it's chroma from the black bar area where there is no color, so it comes out with this odd looking kind of line of B&W picture at the top or bottom that looks kind of like funky EE.

I'm guessing EE stands for "Edge Enhancement", right? So, it could be:

a) on the source material, on the DVD, and the "what to do" is buy a different disc. :(
b) The DVD Player adding "Sharpness" and you can either turn it off or get a new DVD player or
c) The TV is adding "Sharpness" and you should turn it down.

Is that correct?

Yes, and also what I mentioned, d) the DVD player has the CUE(chroma bug).

Do you see the same thing on all discs? On test patterns?
