Thank you all for the quick response on the G90 Service Manual.

Now, where can I find a good test pattern DVD? I have an older Avia Guide to the Home Theater, but the disc only has 4x3 test patterns. I tried that on my G70 that I now have working and I can't (or don't know how) get a 16x9 test pattern so I can fill the screen.

I would like to use an external source if possible for the convergence setup of my new (to me) G90. I have a Toshiba HD-DVD player to run the disc.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide.

there is a HD version of DVE:
http://www.videoessentials.com/DVE_HD.php
http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Video-Essentials-Combo-Disc/dp/B000IHYY3Y

or
http://www.w6rz.net/

or burn your own test pattern DVD in HD-DVD format:

If SD is good enough, the GetGray disk (http://www.calibrate.tv) is very good for grayscale.

Ray,
How old is that Avia disk? Mine is around 5 years and it has at least one nice 16x9 crosshatch pattern with 5 circles (big central and one small in each corner).

If I were you, the first thing I'd do is closely check that disk again. As you say, your Toshiba will up-scale it, so you don't really need an HD-resolution disk.

Herve, Avia has 16x9 patterns -- BUT the disk itself is 4:3. So if you're setting up a 16:9 screen, the 4:3 content will be pillarboxed in the middle, and then the 16:9 pattern on the disk is letterboxed within the 4:3 area. So you end up with a 16:9 pattern that's much smaller than your screen.

Obviously you can increase your raster size to enlarge the pattern to fit your screen, but then you're not using the projector config that you actually want to set up. You really need a 16:9 disk.

Yes, I found a nice 16x9 crosshatch pattern on my Avia disc, but although it is 16x9, it only extends horizontally to the 4x3 width. So it is too small on my screen to reach the edges of the screen. I don't know how to make it larger to fit the screen.

I played with it awhile with no success. If you have any ideas, I would sure welcome them.

Thanks,

Another option is GetGray. The producer says it is not meant for CRT as it does not have cross hatch patterns and some other patterns normally used for CRT. However it does have pattern like pluge for brightness, step gray ramp and window patterns for gray scale etc that are useful for CRT. It costs 25 dollars and you download it yourself and burn it on to a DVD-R. Its patterns are 16:9 and it will fill you screen unlike old DVE and AVIA. I bought it and the process if fairly simple as long as you have a DVD burner.

Thanks for the posts.

I really want a crosshatch pattern, so I can compare to the internal patterns. I think I will first try some of the downloads mentioned above, then buy a CD is that fails.

I'm off on five week road trip today, so I won't get to mess with my projectors for a while. But as soon as I get back, I'll look up the forum again and get some of your suggestions to work.

Thanks again,

Ray

The VE is HD. Is there a BD version?
