View Full Version : Buzzing from Plasmas - electrical noise in the entire house?

So I recently hung a few 42" Panasonic Plasmas, and I get a pretty loud buzzing sound from the Plasmas - even when they are not on.

It's not fan noise, and it's not ground loop noise, because it does it even when bypassing the ground. The noise is coming from inside the TV where I assume the power transformer is, and it does it no matter where I plug in the TV. All the new TVs do it, in different rooms, some louder than others.

The buzzing is loud enough that you can hear it over the volume of the TV itself unless you turn it up really loud. Even when off the buzzing is loud enough to be an annoyance when I'm sitting at my desk about 8 ft away.

This is a new house and I'm thinking something is not quite right with the electrical. I had the electrician out here the other day doing some other work and he checked for loose grounds, etc. at the main box and he said as far as he can tell everything is fine. Voltage at all the outlets he tested is right around 122-123.

It's funny ... when we first moved to this new house I noticed that my APC Battery Backup system for my computer made a loud buzzing sound when I plugged it in - even when it was off. It was so loud I could no longer use it under my desk, and ended up putting it in the data closet for something else. It was silent at my old house (except for when the fans kick on), but I just figured it was going bad or something and didn't think twice about it.

So this electrician I had out here didn't seem to be the most knowledeable guy in the world. I assume there must be some way to troubleshoot this type of problem, but he didn't have any ideas. Is there some kind of device one can use to test for noise in the circuits? Do I just need to find a more knowledgeable electrician, or is this a pretty unusual problem?
