View Full Version : Anyone else just sitting back and laughing at the madness?
I mean on one side, you have pent up frustration being able to vent. On the other you have 7 months worth of confidence quickly turning into panic. PR people making frantic announcements. Insiders (fake or real.. who knows) making outrageous claims without even considering the ramifications.
Couple that with people hating Microsoft, people hating Sony, and throw a little console warfare into the mix and a dash of alleged bribery and this place is just becoming a riot.
The mods must be spinning in their chairs over this.
It certainly has stirred things up!
Yes, I installed a popcorn maker next to me PC quite a while ago for my sojourns into AVS.
Brian Shannon 08-23-07, 01:59 PM Yes frankly I am. Watched two movies last night in my theater and could not be happier.
alpha21 08-23-07, 01:59 PM I thought last week was REALLY boring around here.
I should have guessed that something was abound for this week:)
After the past few announcements in BD's favor, it's nice that HD DVD had a REAL announcement!
Everdog 08-23-07, 02:00 PM I am loving it!:D
The Paramount deal is the gift that just keeps on giving.
This format "war" has reduced grown-ups to children on BOTH sides.
BuGsArEtAsTy 08-23-07, 02:02 PM People are much more illogical than before... and that's a pretty remarkable achievement, considering the illogic that permeated these forums was substantial even before The Announcement.
I'll say this...both sides are really shoveling it today! :D ;)
I have to admit that instead of watching a movie last night after the kid and wife went to bed I, instead, spent the rest of the evening surfing the Blu-ray & HD DVD Areas here. Normally I'd call that kind of activity "pathetic" but it was oh so entertaining to say the least. I love a good format war. Brings out all kinds of things in people, heh, heh.
It is funny. I'll say hidden amongst the madness that both sides have to at least respect the other... even if it's school ground respect :p
Missions 08-23-07, 02:16 PM It's gotten out of control. This week more than any other has brought out the worst in people. All the name calling, personal jabs & ridiculous gifs make it difficult to follow a thread nowadays.
Despite what any scientific report or insider says, no one could predict which format will win.
Let's just pick a side or both, and just enjoy our HD movies while we can. Because, let's face it, unless J6P figures out what we already have, both sides will probably end up owning bricks.
kevivoe 08-23-07, 02:18 PM It will turn out the way intellectuals have always said it would turn out.
If all the rumors are true. Just wait till tomorrow
It's pretty amusing. With all the FUD posts/thread around here (that are getting tiresome), I made a thread that actually encouraged people to relax, and got it removed + a warning to boot. Whatever - I don't really care much about the format war anyway since it is lost in terms of mainstream adoption. I'll just enjoy what I can get on both formats, as a enthusiast.
Cheers.
lemonhead99 08-23-07, 02:24 PM Gotta admit, I love the fanboyism and how they can spin any kind of announcement or story into a positive for "their side". Funny stuff!

I plugged in Casino, and surfed. Twice the madness :D
_Avarice_ 08-23-07, 02:26 PM This format "war" has reduced grown-ups to children on BOTH sides.
That is the perfect analogy for what has transpired here. It's almost as funny as it is absurd.
Almost.
brophog 08-23-07, 02:27 PM I don't know about madness, but I do laugh at the fact this board and others devotes a ridiculously long time in these debates with little regard to the other media options out there nor to how long these types of format "wars" typically take to resolve themselves.
SamwisetheBrave 08-23-07, 03:00 PM I am loving it!:D

Yes, it is hilarious!:D
cybereality 08-23-07, 03:06 PM Yeah this stuff is great. Really brings out the best in people.
I mean, if you can't make fun, then who's gonna make it?
wtr_wkr 08-23-07, 03:13 PM I love this war. Fun from the start and getting better. Now we just need BD's DRM broken so FOX goes neutral, as in neither.
dad1153 08-23-07, 03:20 PM If all the rumors are true. Just wait till tomorrow
God, I hope not. I'm exhausted from all the excitement, reaction, FUD, overreaction and spin that has followed Monday's megaton. I'm not sure I could stand back-to-back megaton news on opposite ends of the same week! I need a weekend to relax, watch an HD movie or two and then come back next week (fresh and rested) for more HD madness! :D
Bailey151 08-23-07, 03:29 PM At least it's not boring :D
donricouga 08-23-07, 03:45 PM It certainly has been a crazy week. Maybe next week something else like the paramount news will happen. That will cause the universe to implode from all the insanity. It has been interesting reading everyones reactions though. I should probably work though
Wow...the blu forum was hysterical....from, I"'ll never buy hd dvd", "studio paid off","Antitrust Suit", "Boycott", etc... I have never heard so much name calling and hatefullness in my life...but, funny how it's been alright for Sony to do it all this time and now it's a problem...time for both sides to calm down and relax...
sure makes the workday more entertaining
It is crazy! Reading the Insiders Forum must be the equivalent to watching a soap opera on daytime television.
I think there are many more twists and turns to this war and people on both sides are going to be eating their words as we lead up to the holidays. It is only going to get crazier! In the meantime, I will enjoy being format neutral and watching movies :)
sure makes the workday more entertaining
Oh yea :D

Not so much laughing at the madness, but more or less disgusted at the garbage I see coming from both sides.
One forum thinks the other forum is full of childishness and ignorance. The other forum thinks they are "above the madness" but look like fools while degrading the competition and having their own little name-calling parties. Now that I think about it, I guess it is quite comical.
"Microsoft sux!!1! They paid Paramount. LOLZ!"
"Yeah, whatever...Sony sux just as bad, hahahaha. They pay ppl too. OWNED!"
The whole thing is tiring and almost makes the forum unreadable.
You know what would be great? To enter the (BD/HD-DVD) Software Forum, and actually see *gasp* SOFTWARE being discussed instead of 2/3 of the front page being filled with Paramount threads and "what if the war..." type questions.
Wild concept, I know, but one can wish.
kowhite 08-23-07, 04:44 PM It is kinda funny. Shows me that neither side is much different than the other, since now one side sounds a bit like the other did just last week.
I think I'm going to wait a lil while for some calm to come down before taking anyone too seriously.
splinters 08-23-07, 04:50 PM It's too bad that a civil discussion isn't possible anymore. There seems to be a large population that wants to pick a side and then have that side win like they have their whole life savings on a bet at the racetrack.
I like the idea that the format war will force both sides to be on their game in terms of delivering features and lowering price. Hopefully we will win out as early adopters somehow...

I am loving it!:D
The Paramount deal is the gift that just keeps on giving.
This format "war" has reduced grown-ups to children on BOTH sides.
That presupposes a difference. We're all on a forum, yammering and whining about expensive toys. Oh, did it break? :( Poor baby.

I'm sitting back but I'm not laughing.
I don't see anything amusing about greedy consumer electronics companies, whose workforces are made up of geeks with umpteen academic degrees, failing to apply enough common sense to agree upon a single format that would benefit everyone rather than maintaining polarizing positions that benefit no one.
javayoda 08-23-07, 05:03 PM I only wish we had this kind of dialog before another war currently transpiring.
That said, this really is a minor amusement and the advantage is still Blu-Rays.
Gary McCoy 08-23-07, 05:19 PM Let us not forget that the owners of the basic patents on the dominant format get a piece of every HD player and every HD movie disk for the next one to two decades. Those Corporations will collect a licensing revenue stream from the bitter rivals who are now promoting the competitive format. Just as did the patent holders for the audio cassette, the VHS cassette, and the DVD.
That money is what the war is about, it has never been about winning fanboys to one format or another. The owner of the technology gets a piece of the action for years to come. The loser eats Billions of $ in development costs.
Yeah this is hilarious.
Like watching that SOB of a neighbors house burn and suddenly realizing that hey "That fire is getting pretty close to my house".
If this isn't the start of a chain reaction we will all have 2 players or a dual format player if we want to see all the movie.
Cheers,
Richard
Assayer 08-23-07, 06:07 PM As wild as this is getting with all the bloggers and viral marketing, it scares me to think of how nuts the 2008 presidential election will get. Fortunately, AVS should be a safe haven where we can all talk about the important issues of our time such as when Weinstein will finally release 'The Whole Bloody Affair'.
PlayDoh 08-23-07, 06:17 PM I'm sitting back but I'm not laughing.

Agreed. But it's not like Sony has *ever* been known to go with the flow - they are pretty much the kings of proprietary-ness-ism. (?)
It's just too bad that they *did* get so much support from the beginning, unlike most of their past attempts...
Not bashing Blu-Ray here, because (technically) it should be better. A lot of their proprietary stuff is better... they just have really strange ways of trying to convince the rest of the world.
Some of it has been funny, but overall this sums it up for me::
It's gotten out of control. This week more than any other has brought out the worst in people. All the name calling, personal jabs & ridiculous gifs make it difficult to follow a thread nowadays.
Jason
As one who has never been perfect( I post more than a few pics), what scares me more is SOME of the names in this very thread have been a party to the back and forth. All of a sudden they jump on the bandwaggon making fun of it, playing the "Lets all be friends" card.

I wonder, more likely their spinning over the hits the site is racking up presently, I would be if I was in their shoes.
javayoda 08-23-07, 07:40 PM I was just banned from a thread for largely innocuous comments. Unfortunate - it doesn't help dispel the widespread notion that this board displays a strong and inexplicable bias.

And that bias might be?
Oinky Mac 08-23-07, 08:45 PM I'm not exactly laughing, but it is interesting to watch the biggest tech companies of the last 20 years, along with the major movie studios, go at it. Perfect subject for a book, which I'm sure will come out before too long. To me the outcome is fairly obvious (both survive) so I'm a little surprised how emotional people are getting.

but it is just this anger and outrage that I find so amusing. I am with the op on this one.
I only wish we had this kind of dialog before another war currently transpiring.

i am sorry. You cant come in this thread under a banner of neutrality and then slip a fanboy statement in without being called for a foul!
SED <--- Rules 08-23-07, 11:50 PM Its easy to sit back and laugh if your a dual format owner, but most of us do not have that kind of money! :o I'm all for blu-ray to succeed, but this Paramount news is just silly. But, once a blu supporter, always a blu supporter I say. Paramount can screw themselves...besides, I only like a couple of movies from them, and as for Dreamworks, only Gladiator comes to mind. No huge loss. The Paramount news was like an atom bomb exploding on this already brutal format war. God knows when the dust will settle...
Sketcha 08-23-07, 11:50 PM Yes, I installed a popcorn maker next to me PC quite a while ago for my sojourns into AVS.
Haven't gone quite that far, but I have been laughing for quite awhile. The hilarity has certainly ramped up some this week, however.
Lee Stewart 08-24-07, 12:05 AM So guys . . . how do you like my new Home Office setup?:D

Where is the toilet paper Lee? Must be using a bidet.:D
Great shot!! We need more chuckles around here.
exostrata 08-24-07, 12:19 AM I agree with the intended context of this post and miss the days when a film would simply emerge on one and only one format. However, the back and forth mud slinging that has been occurring worries me very much. It worries me because when was it ever bullshit to state a preference? When did preference lead to madness? This is a hobby guys, not a political campaign and yet, most of us are picking each other apart simply because one enjoys Red and the other enjoys Blu. Also, what the hell is with the bashing of directors? Bay maybe a glorified director but I'm sure half of you own "Bad Boys" and "The Rock."
Let us not forget Stevie either. Just because he stated a preference for Blu people automatically started to call him a child, an overglorified director. Look, I didn't particularly enjoy AI but this man brought us films like Duel, Jaws, and Saving Private Ryan.
Look, I'm not preaching to the choir but its a pain in the ass to see Batman Begins and Army of Darkness on HD DVD and then only to discover Starship Troopers and Rambo First blood on Blu. I'm not reach so I can't afford both so for the time being I'm stuck in standard Def even though I drool over the demos in stores of Serenity and Black Hawk Down.
P.s Just a side note but this format war is starting to remind of "In the Mouth of Madness," only difference is people believe in a format not a book. I just hope crazy axe wielding manics don't start wandering the streets and ask me if I watch Red or Blu. :(
Robert Clark 08-24-07, 12:24 AM This week has been amusing to read on the outside.
While so many argue, I went out today and bought Hot Fuzz on HD-DVD, and Blood Diamond on BD...
:p
Lee Stewart 08-24-07, 12:41 AM How about one more chuckle?

Now don't spoil anything for me. I'm still finishing the last book. I know that one of these formats was forged in the heart of Mount Doom. I know that even now Frodo is approaching Mount Doom to cast the evil format back into the flames. However, my memory isn't as good as it once was. Which is the evil format again????

Huh? What's that? Some sort 1.5 negative? :D
Glad to see you back - guess they needed some extra help? Too many fires & not enough feet to stomp them out?
