View Full Version : mounting/unmounting ideas for crt pj
v1rtu0s1ty 08-23-07, 03:00 PM Hi folks. I need some ideas. Once I get a crt pj, I would like to have it mounted on the ceiling in my basement. However, I can't always call my friends to help me unmount the crt pj when I need to troubleshoot. We know it's really heavy but I need some ideas on how I can do it myself. I think it's even heavier than me. LOL.
So yeah, share your ideas please.
Thanks,
Neil

v1rtu0s1ty 08-23-07, 05:05 PM Thanks folks. I don't have any crt pj yet. I'm anticipating all of the things that's going to happen once I own one.
jtnfoley 08-23-07, 05:11 PM I've got a boat winch mounted in the ceiling of my equipment closet, cabled to two pulleys (to turn and position the vertical) which allows me to lower and raise a PJ alone. Was a bit of effort, but generally worth it... just watch your cable clamps!
nashou66 08-23-07, 05:13 PM i did the same thing, i found the mount first and bought it because they are very rare to find. and i knew eventually i would find a Projector (Marquee 8000 mint tubes for 470 $$). and then i found another marquee the refrence 8 so i was glad to find another pulley mount for it. I was actually going to buy the toronto mount then put it up for auction but passed the info on to you. its a good buy even if shipping will be about 50-70 bucks. and even before i got the projector i got a great deal on a lumagen scaler.
good luck with your search

zamboniman 08-23-07, 05:14 PM use a mount made of unistrut.
hang from threaded rod. Get some long ones and make short ones for the final position. Install the long ones which would go from ceiling to floor or to table.
Then spin the nuts up the threaded rod little by little lifting each corner a few inches at a time. Once you get it all the way up, replace each long rod with a short one corner at a time.
Takes a little while to do it but is easy and can be done alone.
v1rtu0s1ty 08-23-07, 05:55 PM Wow, I have to see a picture to grasp your ideas guys. I couldn't visualize it well.
Marquee 8000 for $470? I think that is within my budget. However, can it do 1080p with MP/moome/hdfurry modification?
imprez25 08-23-07, 06:06 PM Personally, I'd wait a while before you mount the projector. Most of these things a many years old and most are going to have some issues that require opening the case on a regular basis. I'd stick with floor mounting for a while until you know you are comfortable with it's operation. For me once it's up, it will be there until it dies or I decide to upgrade.

Then spin the nuts up the threaded rod little by little lifting each corner a few inches at a time. That's how I mounted my first few projectors. It works, but it's WORK.
The last few times I've used a variant of Clarence's chain mount:
http://img242.echo.cx/img242/2576/chains5ec.gif
I didn't want to hang the projector from chains on the top, since it would get too tight when you're getting up near the ceiling. So I made a platform out of 3/4" plywood, put some hooks on that, and hooked the chains on those.
With that rig, my 160lb G70 went from the floor almost to the ceiling in 8 minutes. After a bit of "discussion" with the ceiling mount, I had it hanging and unhooked the chains in another 7 minutes. And that was doing it without ANY help. It took some strength, but that was partly because I was going for speed. :) If you went at it a bit slower, instead of picking up one end and moving two chains at once, you can do it much easier. 3 chains hold the weight while you lift up the other corner.
It was a bit challenging because the G70 is significantly longer than the XG I designed the thing for, but it still worked.
nashou66 08-23-07, 06:32 PM i have mine doing 1080p48 now. i'll try to take some pics on my mount i havn't put up yet, i eventually plan to do a side by side stack with a possible blend later on if i dont ware the 16x9 to the tube. Marquees are great especially the with the moome card. that really made it look great, scan lines a little more visable and not as overlapping as with the rgbhv cable. i have to go buy a new tv for my office at my restaurant mine is dieing after 15 years at 12 hours a day average. so getting a sammy crt slimfit hdtv. driffting from my topic..sorry. have to charge my camera and i'll take some pics of the mount and maybe some screen shots for you.

I used the chain method, like Gary also first time I mounted my Sony 1252. Getting the pj onto the mount was the really hard part. When I took that pj down, I just used a rope and pulley to lower the pj to the floor. I think that when I get ready to put the XG up, I will be using some sort of winch. Got some ideas in my head, but have not put it together yet.
nashou66 08-25-07, 06:08 PM Ok here ares some pics of my my mount and of my PJ doing 1080p48 on a 12 foot screen. this winter i hope to have a stack going but need to get some things together.

Ah, I knew it had to be one or the other! If I ever hit the lottery my kitchen will be all Viking and Wolf stainless appliances. Then I would never leave the kitchen! :D
dropzone7 08-27-07, 06:57 PM I found a 30" all gas Viking stove locally in very good condition for $500 when the previous owner moved up to a 60" unit on a remodel. It fit right in where the old standard stove had been installed as well. Big stove for the big money folks, and I get to love their left-overs. Kinda like CRTs, eh? Three cheers for the rich folks out there!
Score! Nice...:D

Ah, now I understand what those long threaded rods are for. :D
Andrew Low 10-29-07, 01:59 PM I think its worth pointing out that you can do a LOT of maintenance while the unit is ceiling mounted. For the 2 units I've had - once mounted, I never had to take them down and I did quite a bit of maintenance on both of them. (not that you _have_ to do a lot to maintain a CRT.. but I like to tinker)
