Hi,

What companies, other than svs, are currently making cylinder subs?

Thanks

Just you partner... get yourself into a DIY... very big bang for your buck...
not that difficult of a build....

Check this thread... http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/diy-subwoofers/5849-decided-sonosub-help.html

More power, cleaner output... depending on which driver you choose... for maybe 1/2 the price...

Otherwise, SVS is it.. and they make great products, I have 2, but am going to build 2 of those that I linked you to...

I wish svs would apply the '1/2 price' logic to their sono subs...

good point jimform2k1 they should apply that 1/2 point theory or at least more of a price difference than they currently offer $50 difference for a 25 31 pci similar to pb10 nsd and $0 for 2039 pci similar to pb12 nsd. WOW big savings for something that supposedly costs much less to build.

Yep, That one is mine, and let me tell you, a little work and you'll be much happier. I'll bet you couldn't match it at 4 times what I paid (with commercial subs). But it's alot of work and some people just don't have the time or tools to put into it. But if you do you will be greatly rewarded. I'm still showing it off. Oh, and i'm coming from an hsu 3mk3 and a 25-31 pci.

lvisneau, you did a great job with that sub, and its gotten to be a very common project around here... cheaper then buying 1 SVS-Ultra13, and will knock the socks off 2 of them for sure... Can't wait until my Hot Tub Deck is complete, so I can get going on building my dual 15" TC-Sonotube setup...
It has been raining here in the Milwaukee area for 2-3 weeks... grrrr

The women in my life are questioning my sanity... hehehhe

Oh and to the Original poster, you can substitute a Creative Sound SDX15 driver (Found Here (http://www.creativesound.ca/details.php?model=SDX15))for the now Non-existant 15" TC-2000.
A Behringer EP2500 amp for @ $300. and Build Materials @ $100. to $150 Thats really pushing it...

$750. to $800.00 each maybe... Can't beat that...or the performance...

Stupid Question Time:

If you can make a better sounding sub for less as a DIY project, why doesn't SVS (or other companies) just make them in a similar fashion and put out a better, less expensive model?

I always hear DIYers saying DIY sounds better but I can't imagine pro speaker/sub guys sit around with their thumbs up their asses. A price disparity I can understand but why would there be a quality disparity?

If their material and labor cost is a quarter of MSP they might be able to keep the doors open. It probably needs to be less for any a business with steady volume.

Totally understand them being more expensive but wouldn't these companies put more R&D into a speaker/sub than a DIY guy? Tweaking, testing, readings in anechoic chambers and such?

I was just curious why a DIY project would even come close to the accuracy or quality of big-name products.

Look at the size of the sonotubes. That is impracticle for all OEMs, except maybe eD. An OEM has to make things the general public will buy.

Keep in mind that we're talking about subwoofers here...and just simple ported subs. There is only so much R&D a company could even do with such a sub. Now if the company is doing extensive R&D on the driver, thats a whole nother matter. However, the DIYer doesn't need to do such R&D when they purchase the driver from the driver manufacturer/distributors. With the driver out of the equation, there isn't much that needs to be "figured out".

Whether it is DIY subs or speakers, the DIYer can equal or better the commercial company. But it just takes much more work to do so with speakers. With subs, it just takes choosing the right driver, amp to match, then the proper alignment for the situation/desired performance/aesthetics. With modeling programs such as Unibox and WinISD, its pretty easy to get a fairly accurate prediction of a DIY subs performance.

And ransac is correct.

Please let us not forget, that most people in this world are lazy.... Its takes time to build one of these subs... Sonotubes are much easier then building boxes, but most people just assume there is so much research and development involved, that they just think its beyond their abilities... Reading and learning can take you a long way, and then implement that knowledge - and you have a completed project....
