View Full Version : Sub Placement Suggestions?

I have finally got my new set-up in place and functioning. It consists of Paradigm CC390 centre, Monitor 9's and Atom Monitors as surrounds. The surrounds are wall mounted about 7 feet up. I have an HSU VTF3 MKII sub.

I have not calibrated all this yet - waiting on an SPL meter and AVIA/DVE to do so.

The attached file is a layout of the (basement)room.

I need suggestions for the sub placement. It is currently located at the point marked in the drawing. I thought near-field was the way to go, now I am wondering....I did crawl for bass, and liked that spot. Putting in the corner near the AV stand was too much I thought, and not enough up front near the TV.

The room is big, by my standards, carpet over underpad, over cement. Drywall. No acoustic panels or bass traps - I have the sub, no need to go there with the WAF yet.

I assume I need to find a place for the sub and then do a calibration. If I don't like that spot, move sub, re calibrate? Or can I put the sub in the listening area and take SPL readings from various areas and compare response?

What are your initial thoughts on placement?

My suggestion would be closer to either the front left or right corner, experimenting by moving it along one of those side walls or back walls a few inches at a time. Keep in mind for each location, you will have to recalibrate. You can use the built in receiver test tones, or a calibration DVD. Your never going to find ONE location using one sub that will satisfy all locations in the room without multiple subs, room treatments, and/or EQ'ing to get a flat response throughout the room.
