View Full Version : Dworak: Symphony #9 on SACD MCH
Currently I have this on DVD-A on Teldec, with the Royal Concertgebouw Orch. Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducting.
I'm quiet happy with the performance and the sound, but I' looking to get this on SACD as well, and wonder what some of you would recommend based on sound and performance. I'm only looking for multi channel releases.
Thanks!
Ivan Fischer's version on Philips Classics is pretty well thought of.

More info about the above SACD: Dvorak: Symphony Nos. 8, 9 - Budapest Festival Orchestra/Fischer (http://www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/10)
Searching www.sa-cd.net for Dvorak will give other SACD MCH recordings as well.
rosedoc 08-27-07, 01:36 AM I have the symphony on dvd performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker from a concert filmed in Palermo, Sicily. It is a German issue with outstanding pq and audio. Shot in hi def with a dts soundtrack. Why just listen when you can enjoy the live concert filmed at a beautiful concert venue. It is available at Amazon and reasonably priced. One of the best classical dvds available.
seowfun 08-27-07, 01:03 PM I have both Harnoncourt's DVD-A and Fischer's SACD. I like both versions, but would give a slight edge toward Fischer's. The brass is more intense in Fischer's version :)
Well I was born In Budapest, so maybe I'll check out the "homeboys"'s performance. ;)
Thanks for the tip, any others are appreciated as well.

Kal Rubinson 09-02-07, 12:24 PM Wonderful new Dvorak 8 with Kreizberg on Pentatone, btw.
indelibo 09-08-07, 11:58 PM I recommend Parvo Jarvi and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Performance-wise, I'd recommend the SACD release of Georg Szell with the Cleveland Orchestra (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000056KW6?ie=UTF8&tag=hdh-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000056KW6). You can't really go wrong with that conductor/orchestra combination.
The sonics are very good for this 60s recording. The Hungarian Szell was a master with Dvorák (amongst other composers) and the playing of the Cleveland is superb. You also get a wonderful rendition of Dvorák 8 into the bargain :D
IS that an MCH recording though? At this point I'm only interested on those.
Thanks.

Thanks.Just checked the cover. It's Stereo.
Recordings were made in 1958/59.
Not sure about this but I think only RCA and maybe Decca had been looking into MCh at that point, to whit the fifty-odd Living Stereo SACDs (of Reiner, Heifetz, Rubinstein, Monteux etc.) released in the last few years being a mixture of stereo and MCh.
As I mentioned the Szell/Cleveland Dvorák recordings are probably some of the best performances of these pieces on disc (IMO), and that's why you'd buy them. The sonics aren't disappointing either :)

Many (but not all) of the Living Stereo SACD's, and also some Mercury Living Presence SACD's, are multi-channel, but the "multi-channel" refers to left+right+center channels, there are no surround channels. There is an excellent Reiner/Chicago Living Stereo SACD of the Dvorak 9, which is 3-channel.
With a timbre-matched center channel and all 3 speakers set to the same output level, some of these have incredibly good imaging, both deep and wide--I don't miss the surround channels. One that I'd particularly recommend is the Munch/Boston complete recording of Ravel Daphnis and Chloe, on Living Stereo.

Yeah, I actually have a Living Stereo 3ch recordings of Dvorak, ad Walton Cello concertos with Piatigorsky on Cello, and it does sound excellent on my rig.
