View Full Version : Streaming Music to PS3 from PC...What is Going On With the Artist Names and Folders?
LSUMatt1514 08-24-07, 08:26 PM Ok, I'm about to drive myself nuts with this thing guys. I am trying to stream my music from my PC via a wireless router to my PS3. At first, all of the artists names were screwed up so I spent the entire day yesterday checking ID3 tags and re-naming each file so that it is correct and perfect and also the same for each artist.
I go downstairs tonight and when I go to sort by artist on the PS3, it's still displaying all of these crazy artist names. I don't get it!!!! The songs/files are not being sorted properly. For example, the 311 song "Unity" was displayed under Ernie something. What?!?!?!?!? I checked the file on the computer and it is indeed 311.
Has anyone else had this problem? I have TONS of music files that are out of place and listed under the wrong artist. I don't get it? What's causing this?
One other issue is my signal strength. Since the router is on the second floor and the PS3 in my home theater room in the basement, I'm only getting about 60% signal strength and frequent loss of connection drops. I spoke with Linksys and they said I could go up to a Wireless N router (currently have a Wireless G) and it MAY help with the issue but he would make no guarantees. What have you guys done to boost your signal? I know not everyone has their PS3 hard wired to their router or sitting in the next room.
Thanks.
Matt
What server are you using to stream the music?
Mattardo 08-25-07, 08:25 AM Sounds like Windows Media Connect.
footbag 08-25-07, 08:56 AM Switching to a wireless N router won't help. I find my wireless to be buggy and my router is 3 feet away, but through a wall. Have you considered a wired connection? I do a lot of streaming, mostly from my laptop to 360. But the only way to eliminate all of the dropouts is to use a wired connection. If you have a basement below, you can add ethernet to behind you entertainment center very easily. It will also be very helpful in the near future.
This is usually due to the router.
I had this problem a lot with my DI-624 and WRT54G...but 1-2 months ago I got a DGL-4300, and my problems are solved. It's probably one of the best non-business wireless routers out there. You can always give it a shot (and return it if it doesn't do the trick).
Don't really feel like going into a detailed review...so I'll just paste my uptime:
Connection Up Time : 35 day(s), 14:19:20
Router's been on since my last power failure it seems :).
LSUMatt1514 08-25-07, 11:31 PM Thanks for the tip on the wireless N router and I may give that other one mentioned a shot at least. I don't know how easy it will be to add a hard wired connection since my modem and router is on the second floor in my office. The only thing I can think of is running a wire to the outside of the house and down the exterior....really don't want to do that. Other than that, I don't know how to add a hard wire connection down there. It would definitely be the best route though.
Does anyone have any experience with these "power outlet adapters" that basically turn your electrical wiring in your home into a hard wired connection. Are they worth a flip?
BTW...noone has said anything about the way the PS3 is displaying the artist names and why it's throwing up these random artists on the screen. Any thoughts? All of my files are VERY well organized on the computer. It's like the PS3 is just picking some random songs, pulling an artist out of it's a*s, and assigning a song to it (like the 311 example I mentioned). No earthly idea what is going on....

Des Flurane 08-26-07, 01:58 AM What server are you using to stream the music?
Have you answered this yet????????
I had a similar problem using Nero Mediahome, switched to Tversity and all my problems went away.

I said you were probably using Windows Media Connect - which will jumble all the songs in a non-sensical manner. If you use Windows Media Player Library sharing to stream your music to the PS3, then ... don't. Try something like Twonky which keeps the track number, etc, properly if you have tagged them properly.
LSUMatt1514 08-26-07, 11:17 AM Sorry guys, but I wasn't sure what you were referring to when you asked what server I was using. I have to asssume it's the Windows Media Connect because I just downloaded the new Windows Media Player 11 to allow file sharing to other devices (I'm running XP). However I also have MusicMatch and I Tunes, but I think these are irrelevevant. I believe it is the Windows Media Connect streaming the music.
Can you give me a litte more info on Twonky or Tversity? What are they and how do they do what they do differently than WMP 11? Thanks a lot fellows.
Matt
TVersity is an absolutely brilliant program. It is all web based, runs in the background as a tiny app, has built in support for the 360 and PS3 and also can stream pics, music and video to Wii (though on 640x480 resolution).
To be truthful, it can stream pics, music and videos to any Flash enabled Web Browser including many Cell Phones.
As long as your PC can view it/play it, your consoles will too. WMP11 limits what you can playback, whereas TVersity does not. It Transcodes everything on the fly to a format your console can accept. There might be a 1-5 second delay when playing back some videos, but that all comes down to the power of the PC running TVersity.
Drop WMP11 sharing like a bad habit. With TVersity, you are able to use your console the way you expect.
Mattardo 08-26-07, 01:17 PM I haven't used TVersity, but most people love it to the point of needing a restraining order - so it must be fairly decent. Twonky worked well in displaying files correctly, but I found that it froze up frequently, and TS files were iffy - sometimes they worked and sometimes they didn't - whether this was a Sony thing or Twonky thing, I couldn't justify paying money for Twonky or any server yet. Gimme IFO handling, then we'll talk, Sony. Until then, I'll have to continue my relationship with my HTPC - right now you're just an occasional fling when I'm drunk..
LSUMatt1514 08-26-07, 01:28 PM Sorry I don't have time to search guys (I've got a fantasy football draft to prepare for in 30 minutes) but is Tversity a free download, or do you have to pay for it? Any conflicts with it, MusicMatch, and ITunes? Thanks!!!!!
Matt
TVersity is free (for now, I would assume some company will buy it and destroy it)
LSUMatt1514 08-28-07, 10:56 PM Guys,
I've been fighting this thing for over an hour now, and am no where closer to getting it setup than when I started. I disabled the media sharing option in WMP11 and downloaded TVersity. I can't for the life of me figure out how to configure it to "talk" to my PS3. The PS3 is not recognizing any media servers since I disabled the media sharing in WMP11. Can someone please give me some initial setup instructions in leyman's terms. The TVersity setup instructions are not all that easy to follow. This thing seems really robust and I want to learn how to use it, but I can't even get it to talk to my PS3. Help!!!!
Matt
When I get home, I will view my settings and report back.
