My Sony Pearl will sometimes have problems with frame rate. When it comes on it will stutter. Sometimes it will be fine and at other times it will just have an occasional hit and yet other times it will act like it is dropping every other frame. I am feeding it via HDMI directly from my Comcast (Motorola) cable box. Has anyone else experience this problem?

You are likely experiencing the typical issues experienced with Motorolla's HDMI output. How long is your HDMI cable? Have you fiddled with the HDMI connection? I had this problem but seem to have solved it with a Gefen HDMI extender and making sure there is a solid HDMI connection (long and heavy HDMI cable).

That could be part of the problem. The HDMI cable is 25' long. However, when this problem shows up, it shows up at boot up and doesn't go away unless I shut down the projector and the Motorola Cable box and then restart everything. That doesn't always cure it, but it sometimes is less pronounced, ie fewer dropped frames. At other times I will boot up and everything is fine - No dropped frames. All this is on HD channels, including 1080i channels.

SOMETIMES, I get dropped frames - it can be groups of frames or occasional single frames. If it is doing it on boot up it stays that way. If it boots up and is not dropping frames when it starts, it will not drop any. It seems to be some part of the boot up sequence where it goes awry.

This is what is frustrating. Its hard to figure out because when I think I have a solution (stops losing sync) it may do it all over again a few "start-ups" later. I'm a bit confused. I truly can't fugure out if it is the Onkyo 805, the cable, the actual connection, or a combination of them. When I fiddle with the connection, it syncs up and may hold the sync. But even without moving it, it may lose sync again the next or a few start-ups later. My next step is to try the Port Savers. If this doesn't work I may split the HDMI length and use the Gefen repeater, which I am currently using at the end of my 50' run. Unfortunately I don't have options for a shorter length unless I table mount the projector instead of keeping it ceiling mounted.

I wonder if Sony CS has anything on this problem in their database. I had a problem that occured on start up where the picture would flip inverted and back to right side up, several times after start up and the image woulf get very noisy. I took it in to the Sony service center and they looked up the problem on the OSny service web-site and they found that the problem was caused by an incorrect resitor value in the original units. They replaced the resistor and the porblem has never returned. I sould call to see if they have seen this one too.

I just called the local Sony repair station and the tech. told me that he has heard of this problem several times. He said that Sony says it is a problem with Comcast's box and Comcast says it is a Sony problem. He also said someone just brought in a JVC projector with the same symptoms. He told me he would go through the Sony database to see if there has been anything new on this and whether thare might have been a resolution. He is going to call me back later today. If he comes up with anything, I'll let you know.

My problem turned out to be the cable. I have perfect sync now with a 25', extender, and a 15' HDMI.

I just had Comcast change out the Motorola DCT3416 for a brand new DCH3416. So far it is fine. The Comcast Tech who came out said that he suspected the problem was with the disk drive in the DCT3416. He said everything is buffered through the drive and that the drive performace was likely the issue. I'll let you know if anything changes.
