View Full Version : Do I understand display resolution options?

Just got my PS3. I want to use it to play games and watch BR discs on my direct-view CRT (480P and 1080i only) and my projector (480P, 720P, 1080i). I'm going to use the component cable and switch it manually from one to the other.

I'm guessing that I'll need to have only 480P and 1080i checked when it's connected to the TV, and check 720P and uncheck 1080i if I ever want to watch BR in 720P, right? What a pain! Please tell me there's an easier way.

I'm at a loss as to how it could be made any easier, what are you hoping for?

There are no quick settings for multiple displays or display resolutions.

Thanks for the affirmation, footbag.

What I was hoping for, kylebisme, was a way to select for a preferred current resolution among the allowed resolutions. So, for example, I could switch to 720P from 1080i when the PS3 is connected to the projector. The way it is now I can switch, but I have to go through the whole display setup procedure and unselect 1080i. When I'm done I have to reselect it and do the setup again. Painful.

I also don't want to run the risk of having the PS3 select 720P for a game when conected to the TV, because the TV doesn't support it. The end result is that I'll probably just never use 720P.

I'd like to control the output. I don't like the model where I tell the console what the display can do and let it use its infinite wisdom to decide. Especially since it doesn't know that I use the same cable for two devices.

Sorry for the rant. I know that when I can afford a 1080P display life will be better.

Thing is, a lot of games don't support 1080i, so you'll need 720p selected for HD quality rendering in those games. However, games that do support 1080i generally render at a higher resolution when doing so than 720p is the maximum rendering resolution supported, so it is generally good to have 1080i selected too. But there is no risk in having 720p enabled when playing a max 720p game on your CRT as long as you have 1080i enabled as well; the console will use that 1080i for it's system menus so even if you do pop a 720p max game in with 720p enabled on your display that doesn't support 720p, all you'll need to do is go back to the menu and dissable 720p. So while you are picking the avalable resolutions rather than the prefered resolution, it is still simply a matter of going into the display options and chaging one thing either way.

Thanks for the clarification. I haven't played a game yet, and I was worried that it would put the display into 720P and I'd be stuck there.

The easiest way to fix your problem is to get a display that support all (480i,480p,720p,1080i,1080p)
that how i fixed mine :D
i put my crt in the bedroom and my new 1080p in the living room.
