I have heard from some people that if you use a wired router it doesn't matter what router you use, is this true?

I am getting ready to buy a PS3, but my 2wire router only has 2 connections, which are already in use (1 computer for me which is connected through HDMI to my HDTV, which the PS3 will also be connected to via HDMI, and another computer for my wife).

I have also heard that any cheapo wired router will work better than even the best wireless like the DGL-4300 (Wouldn't I have to also buy 3 $70 adapters for each computer and the PS3 to use it? If not that does make it *slightly* more affordable)

Is this true (that any cheapo wired router will work)? Somehow I doubt it, since I have heard of some people having problems with some wired routers.

I have researched a bunch of routers at various prices and I'm just not sure what will work best for my situation.

SO... the question is, what are some of the better wired routers with 4 ports that are known to work really well with PS3 (not cutting out or giving weird problems like that) and don't require really expensive adapters for both of my computers and the PS3?

Can I use still use the old adapters from my 2wire on the computers or will I need to get new adaptors for both computers?

From the poll here it seems that (b/g) routers work best for Playstation 3, but isn’t that just for wireless, or does it apply to wired as well?

My PS3 will be around 20 feet from the router and the 2 computers, if that matters. I live in an isolated area so my DSL isn't the fastest.

Sorry, but I don't think there is a definitive answer for this question - no "one" golden router above all I mean.

I can tell you that, at least from my experience that b only routers are no supported or at least not supported well on the PS3. I've heard/seen/read of people and friends connecting both wired and wireless by all three brands with success, and some failures - I myself am running an all Mac OS X network, utilizing an Airport Extreme b/g router, getting 97%+ signal strength with an average of 5500 kbps. If you can, I mean if it works (I know lots of people out there are having wi-fi issues) but why would you not utilize the wireless function of the PS3, works great once it's configured properly that is.

Linksys WRT54G

i'd recommend the WRT54GL actually, but you seem new to networking so the added benefits of being able to flash your router using 3rd party firmware is probably out of your grasp for now.

On Amazon the WRT54GL gets way more positive reviews than the WRT54G, so I will probably go with that.

And I have read that its not nearly as good without updated or third party firmware, so once I have all the hardware and cables I need, and know exactly what firmware I need installed, I'll get a professional to do it.

Do I need Linux to upgrade the firmware? My computers run Windows XP Home.

Will I need an adapter for it, and if so, will I just need 1 for all three devices, or will I need a separate adapter for all three? I don't know if I can still use my old 2Wire adapters or if I'll need new ones for both computers?

What kind of cable will I order to attach it to the computers and the PS3, is there a problem with using it at a distance of 20-25 feet?

I've heard many people talk about v6 and v8, is this the firmware, and if so, will I need any extra hardware to upgrade/modify the firmware so it works as well as other people's here do? I've seen so many third-party firmware for this router, what firmware would you recommend? I've heard some people mention DD-WRT, but I don't know if that's right or if there are other firmware changes that I need.

I don't have Linux on my computers. As long as I have everything I need to install this, I'll probably just get a professional to hook it all up and update the firmware, but I want to get everything they will need 1st and know exactly what firmware I need installed so they will charge me less.

1. Buy a router (hopefully something that is like plug n play or install and thats it cuz it doesn't sound like you know much about this area so the less complex the better).
2. Buy 2 ethernet cables which are the cables you'll use to connect your PCs and PS3 to the router (or 3 depending if the cable that the router comes with is long enough for any of your stuff).
3. Install
4 Setup the PS3 Connection on the PS3
5. Enjoy.
Also, there is a router by D-Link ... forgot the exact model number but its like 4300 or something like that ... its a gaming router. Supposedly it prioritizes the bandwidth or something of that sort and games are top priority. I haven't gotten it but I am going to ... I have heard nothing but good things about it.

You dont need Linux to upgrade your routers firmware. you will need 3 separate ethernet cords. i think they can be 120 feet the longest. one for each computer and one for the PS3. windwos vista or XP will do fine. V6 or V8 is just a router version. mine is a V8 so i went to this site http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1166859837401&packedargs=sku%3D1149562300349&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=3740100349B03&displaypage=download
and downloaded the latest V8 firmware. its easy. u get to chose your version number at the site mentioned above. you dont need any extra hardware, u just need your modem, router and 3 ethernet cords

I've got the Netgear 824 router it works like a charm for me. I've got 2 computers plus my PS3 going wireless to it. Great range as well.

also, if you upgrade your firmware, never EVER do it wirelessly. if something goes wrong, you can "brick" your router. i also HIGHLY recommend staying away from DLink, especially "gaming" routers in general. i've had bad luck with several DLink models, so just an FYI. the "gaming routers" work using QOS (quality of service) which you can do with a Linksys. for the average user, QOS is not necessary anyway. unless you have kids downloading huge files while you're trying to play online, don't bother.

@notsobright: nobody said you needed Linux to upgrade firmware, only if you want added features.

I have a Dlink DIR-655 router and a Netgear GS605 switch.

PS3 is connected to my router, and I have my 2 PCs connected to the switch with a network cable laying on my desk incase I need to hook up my laptop to the LAN.

I have had 2 laptops (my work's and my fiance's) connected wirelessly. I ran out of network cables and wall ports, but I did play around with hooking up the PS2 onto the router before I had gotten my PS3, and that seemed to work as well.

Some people absolutely hate one brand over another, but it's different from person to person.

I've had no problems with Dlink routers so far, and I actually prefer them over Linksys and Netgear.
