supposedly by Xmas of this year, according to other posters. has anyone seen these? do they look to be a lot better than the LED models? I also hear BB staff were given advance information---anything particularly interesting?

I also saw a lot of Mitsu previews, but only the occasional Samsung preview. anyone know whether Samsung will stick to LEDs, or go Laser?

Is there a standard manufacturer, like Phlatlight for the LED tech, where we can read more about this?

sincerely,

/iaw

Just what are supposed to be the advantages of laser?

They claim more colors, better contrast, and ALLOT brighter. Laser front projectors are due soon as well, and they claim a minimum HONEST 1,000. lumens. You cannot do that with LEDs as yet.

Also (for Mit anyway) no more color wheels

will they have it in 60"+ size?

They will still have the 73" size, so I assume the smaller sizes are safe. They may even go bigger than 73".

The Mitsubishi Laser will be launched at CES 2008 at a party at the Palm Casino's night club on the room. Look for a press release and pics then..They had to delay it to get the technology right. They expect it to revolutionize DLP....

I also heard from JVC that they will skip LED and jump from UHP lamp to lasers, but who knows when. Mits is apparently a lot closer.

That is good news. Lasers combined with DILA (LCOS) is a killer combination. I wonder if they will ever sell their 110" rear projection TV they showed at a show, recently. If they can upgrade that behemoth with laser light, they will have something out of Star Trek. Three chips, three lasers, that is the way to go! :)

What kind of question is that? Who wouldn't want "lazerz"?

You know, it'll still cost less than 60" Plasma. I would additionally have to admit that OMFG, I want one as well.

Now I do hope you will please excuse me as I get a tape measure.

I hope it looks better than that picture of the dolphins.
Not as sharp as Pioneer's Kuro 60", or a crt projector, which is what I'd get if I wanted a 100 inches

Are Laser DLPs going to be a huge leap foward? Or just another small improvement that can be marketed to sell more DLPs?

that would be my question also. It appears that sets have reached a point where the limiting factor is source material. If its just a matter of brightness, current sets can fry your eyes out with light levels given today. Granted, a bulb needs to be replaced on a periodic basis but this brings you back up to light levels from the first day of use again. Whether there is any other wear issues (none that I know of) its like having a new set again.

Till broadcasters start putting out better source (this starts from the original filming all the way up the food chain) this will be a limiting factor. Even with BR and HD dvd's how much room for improvement is there? It appears as if the changes to those formats are more to add additional featurettes to dvd content.

The one area I have noticed there are differences in sets is how they handle Standard broadcasts. All appear to handle HD or BR/HD DVD great, but I've noticed differences between sets in this other area. Personally I think the Mitsubishi's handle SQ better than Sony/Toshiba/Samsung sets I have seen.

Will lasers help with viewing angle at all? What about startup time? To me personally, those are the weakest points for RP. Most DLP's I look at, even in the sweet spot, the corners of the picture look darker to me. Maybe its just my imagination, but that's what I see.

Here are some questions that I would like answered.

What is the life of the typical laser diode?

Its long been said that laser pointers are dangerous to the eye so will there be some lower inherent danger with a laser based DLP?

What will be the price difference to a comparable LED based unit?
