Shocker. Hey, it's Half-Life, and a MS based game on top of that. No suprise there. I'm beginning to wonder how well it will even run on the PS3?

I would imagine it would run great, the only thing that would hold it back would be possible developers not wanting to rewrite code that needs it.

I don't mind the wait, as it will all be worth it in the end. I can't wait to play through HL2 again, but this time on my home theater instead of on my laptop.

I noticed this while browsing around a couple sites yesterday but didn't see any stories specifically mentioning the delay or giving a reason for it. I'm sure between Warhawk, CoD4, HS, Halo3 and R&C I'll be able to stay a little busy for those extra few weeks, so while disappointing I don't terribly mind the delay. Just hope it's not a bad omen.

It should run just fine on the PS3....HL2 isn't all that demanding graphics-wise...

I'll believe this when I see more official-sounding confirmation.

...but it does seem very possible in light of so many other 2-3 week delays for PS3. I think companies should start recognizing that it might be in their best business interest to delay *all* versions until each version has been finalized. Doing so many staggered releases only ensures that the PS3 versions will undersell other versions.

Well, seeing how the first episode of Half-Life 2 was on Xbox, I don't see how it can be that much more of a technical hurdle to release it (And it's second parts, etc..) on more powerful consoles. Sony's probably just adding the ability to open doors and activate buttons by shaking the controller up and down (they probably forgot to abuse the six-axis when porting it and remembered it at the last minute), rather than overcoming tehcnical problems a "last-gen" console could handle. Don't tell me they rewrote the code THAT much for episode 2, did they?

lol this article is scary!

WHO at valve is he speaking with? more importantly Valve is not doing the port for the PS3......

For those wondering, beloved EA is doing the port for the PS3 :)

More specifically, the port to PS3 is being handled by EA's UK development office. From what I understand, this internal development office is built on EA's recent acquisition of Criterion (developers of Burnout and Black).

Remember, EA's a big company and has many development groups (most recently earning a controlling share of Ubisoft), not all of which are utterly hopeless.

EDIT: There's a decent Gaf thread on this subject:

Most of the posters see this as great news for PS3. The upshot of the interview is that HL2 is using close to the full processing power of the 360 to run, while the PS3 version runs the game without using any SPUs. Developers, for better or worse, have yet to figure out the actual maximum processing power of the PS3.

That's not really possible. One of the cores of the 360 is roughly equal to one PPE on the PS3. The 360 has 3 of these cores. The PS3 has 1.

So if HL2 were using the full processing power of the 360 to run (all 3 cores and all 6 threads), it couldn't run on the PS3's single PPE.

Incidentally, while HL2 isn't very demanding, Episode 1 did step up the graphics a bit by including the HDR lighting that they had introduced in the Lost Coast episode. I would expect Episode 2 to step it up a little more than that, especially considering how long they have been working on it. ;)

Hence the delay:
For the 360 version of the game, we can probably say we are using around 93-94% of the console's power given our current optimization. With the PS3, we can't exactly say what power cap we reached, since no developer really knows where the boundary is for the PS3. We can tell you that in terms of the whole game together on the PS3, we are not even using the SPU's and it is purely built on the graphics card and Cell. We're still optimizing for PS3 more because we can, which can explain the slight delay to you. But no worries, everything is going smoothly to put down any rumors.

umm...half-life isn't an ms based game (unless you mean pc based game)
