View Full Version : Best picture (quality): short or long throw?

Hey everyone,

I've recently moved into a new apartment and am now looking for the best PJ setup. Right now the pj is quite a bit further away from the wall/screen than before, and it seems like I'm losing some "punch". Could this be correct, or do I just need to perfect all the other variables first? (e.g. my screen is now inclined, since I'm letting it rest now on my large front speakers, while leaning against the wall. [Just a temporary solution, obviously...]).

Is there a benefit in terms of PQ of either short or long throw (does it affect lumens, contrast, sharpness at all)? If short is better I'll probably go that route (even though the long throw is easier to set up in my room).

Regards,
Bart.

Given a projector with a zoom ratio, at the longest throw of it's zoom ratio, you'll get less light output, and generally more contrast. At the shortest throw of it's zoom ratio, you'll get more light output, and generally less contrast. The loss of punch sounds like it is very likely due to zooming in (longer throw ratio) and the corresponding loss of lumens. Projectors with a larger zoom range will change more dramatically (most LCDs).

Thanks for replying Lindahl. I think I'm just going to play around a bit with the throw distance then, to see what garners the best results...
