I know PS3 can run with YDL + VLC. Since the MS HD-AddOn is using usb, would it be possible to get it working on the PS3?

thanks in advance,
~joy

Unless things have changed, no. The Sony can't even handle NTFS usb drives .. what chance does it have against a HD-add-on?

You'd need drivers. I doubt anyone will be releasing drivers anytime soon.

I would be kind of neat. You can run it from vista and xp. A nix driver is not out of the question. It would be strange marriage, but you would have hdmi out and would be format neutral.

heh, yeah MS writing drivers for the PS3...I can see that being a happy marriage!

Alot of things would be neat if the PS3 could do it. But.... there's so many things it's lacking in right now, the last thing you should expect is for Sony to permit a rival format to be played on their console. I'm still waiting for DVD-Audio to go with the SACD on the Ps3 .. but that ain't gonna happen, so I still use my hybrid Pioneer until Sony gives me a reason.

Sony can't even handle NTFS usb drives .. Indeed - and there's NO EXCUSE why PS3 is running an ancient file system.

was there any real reason the ps3 is using fat32?

It certainly doesn't make any sense. You would think they could format it using the same file system the internal drive is formated in.

You would think they could format it using the same file system the internal drive is formated in.Precisely. Sonly probably had to re-format the drive when they got the batches INTO AN OLDER FILE SYSTEM (fat32) from its native NTFS. How crazy is that?! The only thing I can think of is that Sony had developed the OS on fat32, which again, doesn't make any sense. The 4GB file limit is a huge eyesore and it's quite unbecoming of a system that touts itself as being a "next generation console." Argh.

You'd have to have GPU support in Linux in order to play movies anyways...so I don't see this working anytime in the foreseeable future.

I'm pretty stupid when it comes to this, so be kind. Couldn't you load Windows onto the PS3 and then run the add-on from windows? I've seen "install other operating system" and thought that might be a solution. Probably wrong or it would have been done. Anyone care to elaborate why that can't work in words that I can understand. Thanks.

From what I've read, linux is limited in it's memory on the PS3 (thus limiting the effectiveness of applications), so I would imagine that Windows would be as well - if it would be possible to begin with. And it's probably like playing a game. "Play game. Hmm. I'll stick this sega cd in here. DOH!" Probably has to have support for it in some manner prior to OS install. Not sure.

I *really* don't know what I'm talking about, but this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/BluRayAndHDDVD
link shows how it's possible to play HD-DVD's under Ubuntu Feisty Fawn ith the XBOX 360 HD-DVD player. And there are tons of links for installing Ubuntu on the PS3.

Wouldn't that combination give you the option of watching BR (via PS3 OS) or HD-DVD (via Ubuntu in "Other OS" option)?

Edit: Well, I should have read the entire post I linked to...it's not as easy as inserting a disc and watching a movie under Ubuntu...most movies will probably need to be decrypted and stored locally...which makes it almost worthless. My bad.

honestly it'd be easier to just make a HTPC with a Blu ray and HD-DVD drive.

Uh because NTFS is owned by MS?

I still think it would be cool to have the add on running off the ps3. Blu ray and hd plus hdmi out. A very strange marriage and it would make me very happy.

The PS3 should use ext3 :D
