I have a new Sony KDF-46E2000 LCD RPTV which supports HDMI 1.1. When using my new Oppo 981HD DVD player and PS3 with HDMI inputs, there seems to be a lack of colors causing gradients which reminds me of an old computer graphics card using 65K colors versus 16M. When I use component inputs, there are smooth transitions in color. I don't know what the proper term for this is so it's hard search the forums. Is this an DVI/HDMI limitation?
Anyone?

What chip is in the Oppo again?
This is one of the raps or maybe even the rap against the modern Faroudja and Genisis processors you know.
Try setting the Oppo to 480i as a test and letting the diplay di what it will with it and see if this partcular issue is the same or any better.
I have a Sony 55XS955 LCDRP and had an older Oppo 971 dvd player (connected via HDMI). I had the same problem with gradients (they would look like bands of shades... not a smooth light to dark.) It is a problem with the Faroudja/Genesis chip. I sold that player and got the Oppo 970 (which uses a MediaTek chip) and it's back to what it should be (smooth gradients). I also had bad macroblocking and some green push (probably because of DVI to HDMI causing weird color space issues) with the 971, too.

I don't think the Oppo 981 can output 480i and it's HDMI only. I see the bands of shades on my PS3 and a older sony DVD player using HDMI. If the DVD has a bad transfer, the gradients looks much worse. I can't double check the Oppo since it doesn't have component outputs, but my Sony DVD player and the PS3 look fine using component. The only problem it's now it's not upscaled to 720P and I lose image quality. Now, I'm wondering if it's my TV's HDMI processing or just HDMI in general.
