right now I have a hd70 with tosh hd-xa2 HD DVD player,
83" 16 x 9 hi gain white sceen.

the projector has the extended 4 year warranty with one bulb replacement.
(that was a extra #200)

the hd-xa2 is outputting 720p into the hd70

there is new software upgrade it in sept to let the hd-xa2
pass thru 1080p @24 native from the disc

now here is what i want to know:

1) will my hd70 take a 1080p@24 signal
2) how does it match up against the hd80?
3) is it worth the money to upgrade?

It will take the signal, but it will just downrez it to 720p so the only difference is that the projector is now downscaling as opposed to the xa2 and the xa2 has a better scaler.

Only you can decide if it's worth the upgrade by viewing a 1080p projector. Unless you are seriously annoyed by screen door or are constantly thinking to yourself that the picture could be a lot sharper/detailed, then I wouldn't upgrade.

I would recommend use 1080p as input

HD 70 will take the 1080p 24 directly and display at 48Hz
- no more 2/3 pulldown judder

Another advantage using 1080p as input instead of 720p is, you can use HD70's zoom in function to see the extra details available of only in 1080p. (part of the image at the two edges will be cropped off but HD cable do that 90+% of the time - not a bad idea to watch your 2.35:1 HD DVD the 2nd time at higher than 720p resolution, 1st time I would watch at original aspect ratio)

HD80 is definitely better but your screen may be a little small to get the most out of a 1080p

Just how good is the HD70's 48 Hz option? I mean, is all of the judder practically gone?

No more 3/2 judder. Projector actually slightly quieter at 48Hz mode.

Okay, time for a stupid question. What I'm wondering is that, will the HD70 now operate in 48hz mode because that is a multiple of the 24fps signal it is being sent (@1080p)?

I have the same projector (on order) and the same HD DVD player so I'm very interested in this topic.
