Hello !
Is it still available ?

Is it still recommended over similar priced 1080p units ?

I bought a JVC RS1 to replace my older S2. Hated the JVC. It went back immediately and I bought an S4. Couldn't be happier. The biggest difference is the JVC can fill a very large screen a bit better, but to the detriment of it's wacky colors. If you prefer accurate color to a better fill factor, check out the RS1, But, just don't buy into the "If it's 1080p, then it has to better". The S4's glass is far superior for a sharper image, and there's also no convergence issues.

I just sold my S4 to upgrade to an 11S1. While I had the S4, a few weeks ago I also had a BenQ 1080p that just came out, so I decided to see just how good 1080p was. The only difference I noticed was the Benq was a little sharper. I used similar clips from Casino Royale played on the PS3 to do the comparisons. Mind you, the Benq had not been calibrated at all, but it made me realize just how good the S4 is. Santellavision and others, including Dan Miller from Marantz, have posted in several threads here about the stunning capabilities of the S4. If I hadn't sold it, I would have still been very happy with it knowing just how good it is.

Now, if you want to compare the differences between the S4 and the S1, that's a whole 'nother story! Needless to say, the S1 is simply amazing.

on an 80" 16-9 screen will the S4 be as bright as lets say a VP4001 on a 100" screen?

On the VP4001 from what I have heard most people are closing the iris to the max to get the best results. And you econ for the bulb. Do you also have to close the iris on the S4 to get better contrast? I would like to use the S4 over the VP4001 because of the color acuracy of the S4, extra HDMI port, and because I heard the S4 does a great job with SD DVD's, even better than the VP15S1. (Dan Miller said this). I would also mount the S4 about 6 inches to 1 foot back from its Min. throw distance to get the 80" image. So I will be mounting it very close to its Min throw verus its Max. I hear so many bad things about he brightness of the S4 so I don't want to make a mistake and sell the VP4001 and find out the S4 is not bright enouph to satisfy me.

I have both right now with zero hours and can't decide which one to sell. And I was also looking at a sharp Z12000mkii. I don't want to try them first because when I go to sell the one I don't want... I can't say it has zero hours on the Lamp. So I would like to keep the S4 but am afraid that it may be a while before I make my room dark. there is a white ceiling and walls... but it is a very long room 40+ feet so the back wall is far away. my floor is a dark hardwood floor.

I was looking at one of the new Sony Dynaclear screens and before i can make my room dark.. I would use the Dynaclear. they only have an 80" wich is okay by me.

The 12S4 is clearanced around, so you just have to find them. Great unit for sure though, and better than some of the 1080p for sure.

well I have someone who wants to buy the VP4001 today... but I like your feedback on the S4 and you know how well it works on an 84" screen.

WHAT

first you say the RS1 has wacky colors.

then you say: If you prefer accurate color... check out the RS1

this sure makes a lot of sense.

Mis-type. Should have said "If you prefer accurate color to a better fill factor, check out the S4".
