I‘ve been using an Infocus X1 for about three years. The X1 went south and I find myself unexpectedly needing to replace it as soon as possible. I was always very happy with the performance of the X1 watching mostly HD sports & movies from my cable box, standard DVDs and standard def television. My replacement budget is very low. $750 is my magic number. I’m looking for suggestions for a PJ with comparable or preferably better performance than my X1.
Some details on my HT- I have near-total control of ambient light. I am projecting from a distance dictated by the room- 11’8”. The walls are dark burgundy, with the exception of my painted in “screen” which is approx. 85” diag. and painted with a screen formula that I don’t remember right now. My sources are an HD Comcast/Motorola cable box and a mid-range Sony DVD player. Can I find a PJ to replace my X1 for under $750? Suggestions? Thanks.

The Optoma HD70 is currently under $750 after a $200 rebate. It's a good 720p PJ and has served many of us well under the conditions you describe.
There are several other good 720p PJs under $1,000 but none as low as the Optoma currently.

I agree with the HD70. I didn't know it was that cheap now.

Many XGA options await you at or below your price point. Check out the upcoming labor day sales.

I would love to get the HD70. Unfortunately, with my setup it just won't work. I have a VERY low ceiling in my HT room, just over 6 feet. With the HD70 offset, the bottom of my screen would be almost on the floor. Any order XGA PJs around $750 anyone recommends?

Ceiling Mount: 72 - 41 - 12 - 6 = 13 inches from the floor (plus, add whatever inches above 72" since you said it was just over 6 feet.)
That's not bad unless you want more than one row of seats.
Or, low table/shelf mount and project up the wall. If the top of the image was 70" to allow a 2" black border, that would put the bottom of the image at:
70 - 41 = 29" from the floor, sitting on a table 17" high.
