View Full Version : Amazon taking forever to ship?
fatherom 08-28-07, 06:23 PM Hi all,
I pre-ordered Heroes on July 8. It says on amazon it's not going to ship until September 4, with a delivery estimate of 9/11-9/15!!!
I used to get new releases the day or the day after their release date.
I emailed customer service, but haven't heard back yet.
Anyone else experience this? Any ideas why this is?
Thanks,
Chris
divianb 08-28-07, 06:47 PM Not my case. I ordered sometime in June or July and mine shipped today.
Free shipping but I do not have the prime time deal.

I pre-ordered last May & it shipped yesterday and based on my SH Status, "Out to delivery"!!! :D
Since Aug. 2006, ... 98% of my HD DVDs in my library were shipped by Amazon (PRIME 2-day FREE SH) and I received them on the day of the release.

jcsparks 08-28-07, 06:53 PM Prime member. I ordered May 18th and it still has not shipped for me. Didn't receive any email saying it had been delayed, but it doesn't say "shipping soon" yet either, just kind of in limbo.
gerrynole 08-28-07, 06:54 PM mine shipped yesterday but seems to be taking its time in chatanooga(spelling)
jcsparks 08-28-07, 06:56 PM I guess the silver-lining is that demand seems to be exceeding supply. That's got to be a good sign for Universal and any one else releasing on HD-DVD. Maybe HBO will take note that great TV on HD-DVD will sell. :) (ROME!)
mdc3000 08-28-07, 07:00 PM This won't make you feel good - I ordered LAST WEEK and it shipped out yesterday. Must be region dependent ie. The warehouse closest to you doesn't have it in stock, the one closest to ME does.
jcsparks 08-28-07, 07:00 PM Here's an interesting twist: I noticed that TV guide coupon for 5% off, I wasn't going to use it but someone else had noted that they placed an order yesterday and it shipped today. I placed a new order with the coupon a few hours back and it now says "Shipping Soon" for that new order.
I cancelled the original order. I really thought that they would just process orders in the order they were received - but evidently that is not the case. YMMV, but that is what worked for me. Cheers.
Yeah, I had it preordered for a while and it didn't ship today when I figured it was going to considering its the release day...said it would ship the 4th, this with just using the free shipping offer. I didn't use the tvguide code either. I canceled the order, re-ordered it with the code and selected 2 day shipping and it says it should ship it tomorrow and get to me by Friday.
gallifrey 08-28-07, 08:12 PM I ordered it sunday using the tvguide code and it shipped yesterday.
Sofdec7 08-28-07, 08:37 PM I just placed an order this morning and have an estimated ship date of tomorrow. I'm actually surprised it didn't ship today when everything else did (other new releases as well as smaller items like batteries)
Chris Rein 08-28-07, 09:23 PM Nope. Got it today.
And what's even better is I placed an order yesterday for the "3 for 2" deals and got them today. WOW! And I didn't pay for shipping. Nice. :)
I ordered yesterday and received it today. Also, am a prime member.
evolver 08-28-07, 10:20 PM Got mine.

Ditto. I emailed them about it a few days go and the response was "it will ship on the release date"
Yeah Right.
lockheede 08-28-07, 11:31 PM I placed 4 separate orders after midnight last night and they all shipped today...
karlw2000 08-29-07, 12:24 AM I placed my order over the weekend and still waiting. Of course, I went cheap and got the extra 5% off as well as the free shipping...guess Amazon wants to make it difficult so that next time I pay for shipping ;).
I ordered it on July 26 with the tv guide coupon and free shipping. My estimate is the same: shipping on Sept. 4, delivery Sept. 11-17.
I always choose free shipping, and it's often delayed. The funny thing is, the actual shipping time is fast. Once I get the email telling me that it shipped, I usually get it in 2-3 days. However, they often wait about a week before they send out an "in stock" item.
zappa2001 08-29-07, 03:45 AM It's funny that I pre-order all of this stuff months in advance... then you watch the tracking of the items shipped.

lgans316 08-29-07, 06:01 AM I am a newbie to amazon.com.
Is it possible to combine 2 orders ? The web-site mentions that my recent order would be delivered between Sep-17 and Sep-17. I am planning to order Troy (DC) separately and combine this with the previous order. Is this possible ? Please help.
mrowley 08-29-07, 07:31 AM There is no problem combining orders.
You will find the option on your "Where's My Stuff" page.
Mark
It could be the holiday weekend screwing things up. Mine says its awaiting carrier to pick up and I wont get mine till sept 6th with the 3-5 day standard shipping. Not bad as thats my birthday and I have the day off , but would have liked to have it over the long weekend
danc8379 08-29-07, 12:49 PM When Amazon first started offering the free Super Saver shipping I would always get orders literally 2-3 days after ordering. I think they realized that not as many people were paying for shipping because they were getting their orders just as fast using free Super Saver shipping. So I think now they intentionally sit on orders for several days before even beginning the process of shipping.

Orders with certain types of promotion discounts can't be combined but otherwise it's possible. I've noticed that my orders with the 10 % HD discount that I qualified for last year seems to prevent combining of orders where it is applied. First you need to complete the orders and afterwards you are able to combine existing orders if there are no disount types that prevent it.
Adam_ME 08-29-07, 01:21 PM I ordered my copy of Heroes a while back and it still isn't even being prepped for shipping.
At least Dawn of the Dead(2004) and Rotting Hill are being prepped though. Hopefully those ship out today so I can have them by the weekend.
I'm using the Super Saver Shipping, BTW.

Same, never had this problem with Amazon before.
Rainier2 08-29-07, 02:55 PM I ordered some movies off Amazon yesterday and it said I should receive in 5-9 business days... now its up to 12-18 business days :\

You are not alone, it's wired to say the least
maybe dvd shipping centers are slammed with unusually high orders?

Exactly. I've had the same experience. I'm not going to join Prime or pay for shipping to get it faster, though. In my world, it's beneficial for them to ship because I don't get charged until they ship. When they want my money, they'll ship :)
Fortunately, I have a huge backlog of movies to watch (+3 more because of the sale), so I'm in no hurry!
SoulOnice 08-29-07, 03:28 PM My order shipped in one day.
jorgerod 08-29-07, 03:33 PM I got the email this morning about the delay on Heroes from Amazon
Jorge
MrBigglesworth 08-29-07, 03:34 PM I cant speak for Heroes, but I did the 360 add on with 3 movies to ship with it yesterday and standard 2 day shipping but it go here today anyway.
Adam_ME 08-29-07, 03:40 PM Looks like my order is finally being prepped for shipment. If past history is any indication, it'll ship either late tonight or sometime tomorrow. Which means with the holiday weekend coming up, I'll probably get it Tuesday or Wednesday.:(
I ordered just before midnight monday and to my amazement I got one shipment this morning. Thats with my 2 day prime free shipping. Amazing.
user4avsforum 08-29-07, 03:49 PM maybe dvd shipping centers are slammed with unusually high orders?
+1
I ordered the Xbox AO and 3 movies last night. It is supposed to arrive in 3-4 weeks. The HD DVD and Blu-ray promotions have really exploded Amazon sales; especially on the HD DVD side. They will probably accelerate deliveries and ship earlier than current estimates once they adapt for this much higher volume.
baldbull 08-29-07, 05:09 PM Mine shipped on Monday but for some reason via 3-day select shipping even though I am a Prime member and selected 2-day shipping. Kind of annoying since my wife and I planned to watch it tonight. Oh well...
With the 10% off coupon from BB, I might just cancel from Amazon and pick up Blades of Glory and Heroes from there for a few more $.
CorruptedDragon 08-29-07, 06:36 PM I placed 4 separate orders from amazon, 2 on monday, and 2 on tuesday. One of my tuesday orders just shipped, yet the others are just sitting there. I always pick free shipping because im an hour away from an amazon wharehouse and i always get it either next day or 2 days after it ships. There shipping is always sketchy. Sometimes its immediate, sometimes if you pick free, they delay it for days for no reason i guess as a punishment for not paying them to ship it.
OhioMike 08-29-07, 06:59 PM There are probably two things @ play here:
1) They are overwhelmed from the thousands of items sold last night form the HD-DVD deals. I know one person said he bought 15 movies alone on the 3for2. I got 7 items myself.
2) they (i'm pretty sure) pick and pack orders placed the same day with a certain order relating to type of shipping selected. With overnight coming first down through to the free shipping. (maybe) If they don't get to the free shipping orders at days end, they get pushed back behind the overnights and next day deliveries for the next day and so on day after day. So it's maybe not that it is punishment for free shipping but rather a last priority issue. So that could be why sometimes you get them quickly and at other times not so much. Simple supply and demand economics. Could be the case, I don't know, but it is a possible scenario for a company shipping millions of items each year. You would have to have a priority list to manage something of that magnitude.
jus10 said 08-29-07, 08:18 PM i placed my order on monday night and it's not expected to ship until the 4th! that's next wednesday.. pretty disappointing. I did the buy 2 get 1 free deal.. hopefully they ship it earlier!
I do believe that Amazon is being slightly slower than normal with the orders that are in the free shipping category, but I am optimistic enough to think that perhaps they are being flooded with orders and having trouble keeping up. As for Amazon's "expected" shipping date and "expected" delivery dates, I have never actually had to wait that long. I suspect that they set pessimistic dates so that they will have time just in case something does happen. When I choose free shipping I always receive my packages earlier than the Amazon web page estimates. Now Deep Discount DVD has been another story--one of my orders with them took over 5 weeks to arrive after shipping.
Think yourself lucky that you are not sat in the UK waiting for your order. Here are my shipping/delivery estimates for the 6 discs that I ordered: -
Shipping estimate: September 10, 2007 - September 13, 2007
Delivery estimate: September 21, 2007 - November 2, 2007
How'dya like them apples :D
Let us know when the non-combo version comes!
lgans316 08-30-07, 02:11 AM 2 days back I had ordered 4 Hi-Def movies utilizing the 2+1 promotion. I received a mail today that the order has been shipped.
My order shipped today within a couple of hours of ordering - then again I did have to pay USD$24 for shipping to Australia :-)
So you should really change the misleading thread title to 'Amazon free shipping is taking forever' :-P

How many items did you purchase to get $24 in postage.
Was for 9 titles.
Amazon are well worth the postage money - I have ordered many many times over the past decade - they often send from Europe as well as via the Americas - I have never had any probems.
They are also one of the few companies that actually pack things properly - which is especially important when you send stuff 20,000km :-)
jason10mm 08-30-07, 08:17 AM I doubt these HD purchases are even a blip on their shipping process. Look at all the stuff they sell, a few thousand, or even tens of thousands of discs isn't gonna matter. I think they are trying to push prime or standard shipping, and DVD sales are a good place to do so.

Probably, mine still haven't shipped but they are all in stock and I'm using free shipping. Although I can't complain too much... Six movies for $67.83!!! Even if they don't get here until Mid-September that price rocks!
fitprod 08-30-07, 10:04 AM You know... It could be that it is difficult for them to get through the spike in orders.
Just because the HD/Blu-ray orders are in the "few thousands" doesn't mean it's all centrally located, and that they instantly are able to sort through them all.
I ordered my last batch of Paramount Blu-ray last week and it just now shipped out. I figure I'll have to wait until next week for them to process my 'buy 2 get 1 free" orders as well. Especially with the Holiday weekend coming up.
fitprod
mine won't ship till the 4th, well over a week.
XblLucian 08-30-07, 03:25 PM mine won't ship till the 4th, well over a week.
If I order one 'In Stock' item that is eligible for free shipping today (8/30):
It says estimated ship date 8/31 when I select standard shipping
It says estimated ship date 9/4 when I select free shipping
Like OhioMike said, I believe it's all about priority - if someone pays for overnight shipping, it should be shipped sooner than someone who selects standard or free shipping.
I find that my item still usually ships sooner than they estimate (and I'm cheap so I always pick free shipping). I can't blame Amazon for this practice; it seems appropriate to me.
So you should really change the misleading thread title to 'Amazon free shipping is taking forever' :-P
This is true for the past 4 months or so every movie's) that I purchase has taken about 3-4 weeks for delivery. It use to take 7-10 days. And all were in stock with the tag that if you buy them before a certain time they would be at your door like 2 days later. But once you click the free shipping it changes to 21 days! I also had some orders with the status shipping but with a delivery date weeks later, and when I called in to cancel the order they wouldn't saying that since the order is preparing to ship I would have to receive it first then send it back. But how is it ready to ship if the delivery date is the next month? Response. Sorry sir that's what our system states and we cant change it! This has happened to me so many times with Amazon that I now assume that everything will take a month. And if I really need it sooner they I just bend over and take the extra shipping charge. Its not so bad having to wait a few weeks when the price is right. But they use to be a lot better. What do you expect for free.;)
I ordered 300 on August 27 and It tells me Delivery estimate: September 11, 2007 - September 17, 2007 . Its going to take almost 3 weeks to get it :(
byronmhome 08-30-07, 05:16 PM I jumped on the offers of the past few days and started getting stuff today. I got Shawn of the Dead, Sereneity, Pitch Black, Fear and loathing in las Vegas. Tomorrow UPS shows i will get Xbox 360 HD addon, Road Warrior, T3, V for Vendetta and the Toshiba HD-A2. I did the free amazon prime trial :)
tmeekins 08-30-07, 06:24 PM I pre-ordered Heroes and 300 in late june / early july. I still haven't received it yet. Web site says it will ship 9/4 or thereabouts. It's that darn "free shipping" button. When they started to do the free-shipping a year or two back, I still got things within a day or two... but now I think they just bump me to the back of the queue until all other orders are finished and if there's still some room on the truck. It really started to get bad when the offered the Prime service. I think they intentionally delay free shipments to entice me into getting Prime.

I am positive that they do delay the free shipping orders a couple of days, and it is also true that if someone places a one or two day order, they will immediately fill that order first, but to be fair those people are paying for the faster shipping. Regarding Heroes, I think they probably received more orders than they actually had in stock. That is good for HD DVD but frustrating to those still waiting. Also, Labor Day is complicating shipment plans a bit.
rosscan 08-30-07, 11:50 PM Lately for me its hit or miss. I orderered Hot Fuzz on August 5th, shipped out the 7th, got it the next day. I ordered Heroes yesterday but its still sitting there and not in the shipping soon process.
DrSchmoe 08-31-07, 12:20 AM I think they intentionally delay free shipments to entice me into getting Prime.
I'll confirm this. I had somewhere around 60 shipments from them last year. Over the course of the year that the free shipments started getting drawn-out. Also, if you look at their annual report, they mention free shipping cuts significantly into their margins. I moved to Prime, and now everything in stock ships the same day (provided I don't order after business).
Generally speaking Prime isn't a money-maker either. People that sign up try to get their money's worth (sort of like the Costco phenomenon -- the fee ensures loyalty but doesn't necessarily generate huge revenue in and of itself).
As for the priority theory, I've worked in the ERP industry for a long time. I don't think it is a matter of prioritization at all -- I believe it is an intentionally injected delay (logically they are issuing a material reservation against the future date and a future PO). You can tell because they assign an expected ship date a couple weeks out and stick to that with perfection. During the intervening period they could get slammed with new orders, yet they still ship when they say.
narcopolo 08-31-07, 12:36 AM With the 10% off coupon from BB, I might just cancel from Amazon and pick up Blades of Glory and Heroes from there for a few more $.
You won't be able to use it for Blades Of Glory until the sale pricing ends, then you can buy it and get the 10% off.

I don't think 29.99 classifies as a sale. They're just advertising it at the main price they'll be having for weeks to come
eatenbacktolife 08-31-07, 01:10 AM I use Amazon prime mainly so they process my order the same day. Anything I've ever ordered with free shipping usually sits in purgatory for a week or two until they decide to ship it. I can only imagine how much they've paid in shipping costs with the amount of crap I've ordered the last year.
DrSchmoe 08-31-07, 10:25 AM I can only imagine how much they've paid in shipping costs with the amount of crap I've ordered the last year.
They don't... I don't know their specific deal since I haven't worked for them, but I can guarantee they have a flat pricing contract with UPS. They just pay more when the aggregate ratio of shipments moves from ground to 2-day (thus the Prime offset fee). The logistics companies would rather book the guaranteed revenue. In the end, it works out best for everyone.
CorruptedDragon 08-31-07, 10:51 AM I had prime for about a month before i canceled it. Why? Because they would use the free ground shipping to mail me my stuff! I called and was like, why are you shipping it ground if i have prime? They said that because i live within 1-2 days transit time of the wharehouse using ground, they shipped it that way. So im like, soooooo im paying $79 extra just so you can send it to me with the free shipping? She said basically, and i canceled.

Personally I've found that my items always ship before Amazon's estimate when I place the order.
It seems silly to me to - in essence - tell someone, "No, we don't want your money just yet. Because you selected our free shipping option, we're not going to accept your money for a couple days. There, that'll teach you a lesson about selecting free shipping!"
I pre-ordered Heroes with the free shipping option and to my surprise it was waiting last night (Thursday) when I arrived home from work. It only took two days for the post office--not UPS--to deliver it. I still have two open orders related to the sale, and since Monday is Labor Day, I do not expect Amazon now to ship until Tuesday. I will see when they arrive, but I suspect I will actually have them by next weekend. Since I have Heroes for this weekend--plus a local fireworks show related to the holiday--I can live with the "slowness" of Amazon. I still believe that Amazon is the fastest of those companies offering free delivery. As I have mentioned, when I order from DDD I have always received everything, but sometimes the wait involves weeks. I prefer Amazon.
DrSchmoe 08-31-07, 04:48 PM There, that'll teach you a lesson about selecting free shipping!"
True, but they've got to be doing it because people are paying for shipping or get pushed into Prime. From an accounting perspective the delayed revenue is meaningless (they can book your order into AR the second you hit submit -- it's still profit even though it might be "phantom"). The only downside would be potential cancellations due to the delay, and I assume that's minimal since they're still pushing ship dates out.

I pre-ordered Heroes on Monday. No 10% off :(, no prime membership, nothing special. Picked free shipping. It shipped on Tuesday. DHL delivered it to Portland Oregon yesterday afternoon and the post office delivered it to me this morning.
I don't know why things worked out so well for me, but hopefully the rest of you will get your orders very soon.

Yea, they did that to me too, when I had the free trial. Usually took 3 days to get anything. Right before the trial expired they starting sending stuff by 2 day air instead, but I passed on paying the $79.
I paid $6.98 extra (Tuesday late evening, after checking local prices) to ship Heroes by UPS 2 day air and it arrived today after being shipped on Wednesday.
Mistar Muffin 09-01-07, 06:31 PM Ordered Monday, along with everyone else. Called Friday wanting to know why my stuff hadn't shipped yet, but got blown off. My 3 orders from Monday just shipped today, 5 days after I ordered it, and according to their site they won't be delivered for 5 days. Usually, when I order from Amazon, I receive everything within 2-3 days. None of the movies I ordered were backordered, so there's no reason for the delay. FYI, I did the prime trial about 2 months ago, and haven't really ordered anything from then since it expired. Sounds like a conspiracy to me :-p
user4avsforum 09-01-07, 11:55 PM They must be catching up with shipments.
Since I ordered on August 28th mine said it will ship on the 10th. I just checked and it now says it is being prep'ed for shipment, hopefully this is a good sign that it will ship well before the 10th.
rosscan 09-02-07, 12:59 AM Update, mine was ordered on the 29th and shipped today.
TrevorS 09-02-07, 03:50 AM I placed an order for nine BD in the wee hours Tuesday morning and they were reported shipped Wednesday. I placed an order for six HD DVD late Monday evening and they were reported shipped Saturday. I expect to receive all of them by Friday 9/7.
Got mine right away, but I preordered it a long time ago. Any word back yet?
No issue from Amazon here. I don't recall when I preordered Heroes, but I had the disc on the 29th or 30th, and I'm in Canada! I also had my BD 3 for 2 order shipped a day after I ordered, so I should have that early next week.

Just checked outside my door and all three packages of HD discs arrived today via the free shipping. That's exactly five USPS mail days from when I placed the order (Monday night to Tuesday afternoon allowing for Labor Day Holiday.) Interestingly enough -- it appears as though the shipments may actually have been timed to arrive together. The BD came from Kentucky Wednesday, and the others came from Pennsylvania and Delaware Saturday! That's pretty amazing in my opinion :)!

Same here, I called to complain about their using Ground Shipping when I had signed up for Prime and they responded that if they "feel" that the package could get to me in two days by Ground they would use it.
I canceled Prime and got my refund. I also canceled all my Amazon pre-orders and switched to DVD Pacific.

If it doesn't arrive, they should credit you imo. They didn't make you any sort of offer?

Nope, they just used plain, old UPS ground 1/2 the time taking up to a week to arrive.
I originally thought it was just someone on the line just not noticing that I had Prime membership.
Then I called Amazon directly (1-866-216-1072) and found out their policy was that wacky "If we FEEL that your package could get there in two days, we will send by Ground".
They wouldn't change their policy so I canceled and got 11/12 months of my Prime Membership refunded since I had used most of my 1st month.
Needless to say, I was ticked off enough at Amazon that I canceled several hundred dollars worth of HD DVD pre-orders and gave my business to DVD Pacific which I'm quite happy with.

Wow, that sucks. Sorry. :(
Do you have a link to DVD Pacific? Are they more inexpensive when it comes to discs? I've had no real issues with Prime so far, but it doesn't hurt to have a Plan-B. ;)
MichaelHDDVD 09-04-07, 08:56 PM Got mine today! 6 days for free shipping (including labor day holiday) not bad imo

They are about the same price as Amazon. In addition, they also carry adult HD DVD titles, do a search in the Adult section using "HD". The VC-1 encoded titles have rather stunning clarity.
Clever_User_Name 09-06-07, 02:09 PM Just got my 15 movies moments ago (ordered a week ago Monday - first day, super saver shipping)!!
I have a feeling tonight will not be productive.
Damn, 15 movies? Wow... I got my 3 yesterday, ordered last week Tues or Wed I believe.
TrevorS 09-08-07, 04:16 PM Just checked outside my door and all three packages of HD discs arrived today via the free shipping.
Placed another order for three titles via free shipping on Saturday Labor Day weekend. They shipped Friday and I received them today (Saturday.) That's once again a total of exactly five USPS mail days from when I placed the order. Seems both very good and very consistent to me. Thanks much Amazon :)!
Omegasaber 09-08-07, 08:09 PM I've never had a problem with them personally, I've pre-ordered items months in advance as well as the night before and they ship the next or same day and I get them the following day. This is Prime free 2-day shipping.
