View Full Version : Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix HD DVD only?
UlumaProDave 08-28-07, 08:08 PM In the USA Today, today they had an article about this Fall release. HD DVD, Blu-ray and films to be released on both formats. In the HD DVD only list they have Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Maybe I missed something or this has been posted before, but anyway why would this be. I know Batman and other Warner films are only on HD DVD, But Blu-ray is suppose to have its java thing worked out by Fall.
Anyway, GO HD DVD!
probably just a efitorial mistake.
David Scott 08-28-07, 08:13 PM Hmmm, either the writer made a mistake or...............let the speculation begin.........

It seems that the new profile might get pushed to 2008, USA Today might have leaked some info ahead of time, since CEDIA is around the corner. Can this article be seen anywhere online?
sunnysky 08-28-07, 08:15 PM I'm glad there is no smackdown forum here, because that type of error could cause widespread panic and over the top crazyness.
very possible considering warner has been favoring hd, alot of blu ray owners are still waiting for batman begins, matrix and V for vendetta.
Regardless of how it comes out, I will say that I bought the import version and it is one of the best HD DVDs I have seen - I have about 30 now, but it is still one of the ones I put on to show off...

Then punch up the "high-def formats duel over prices and new films" story.
Read this if you want to, then punch up the "What's coming to high-def and when" story to see the release dates, and who's getting what films.

I agree, I have it also and it looks and sounds excellent.
It wouldn't surprise me since the import version of Goblet of Fire has an In Movie Experience and Blu-ray's still incapable of housing one of these in the same way that HD DVD can. If the entire series has one of these available I could see them delaying it on Blu-ray until there are enough new players out there that can utilize the PiP.
Goblet of fire was HD-DVD only so why not order of the p. It seems if this is true. BD-J could really be messing things up. I'm sure WB wants to put out more blu-ray. But I think they want to have all the same stuff on each disc as id imagine it eazyer to set things up. Just the final specs are different..

Where can you get the import versions?
wasn't HP series coming out as a box set in the US?? I remember reading this on some press release weeks back.

What most gathered from that box set announcement is that it will be available when Harry Potter 5 is released, the box set of all 5 for HD DVD will be available that day.

Very reputable and dependable site to order from. I ordered from them and received it in a few days. It was well worth the money.
honestly, I don't understand the phonomanon surrounding the HP series but I'll pick up the boxset. The gf seems to love it, any reason to get her hooked on hd.
Arakis5 08-28-07, 09:12 PM I'm going to be pissed if the BR spec slips and causes a delay in release of the HP series!!!!!
I have the UK HPGF import, great picture and audio!
cybereality 08-28-07, 09:18 PM It could be a misprint, but it seems like a strange mistake. Warner has been favoring HD DVD, it wouldn't surprise me.
DrumAllDay 08-28-07, 09:30 PM Traditionally, Warner has liked to release discs with parity. So, discs like Batman Begins, Matrix, and V for Vendetta were HD DVD only because Blu-ray couldn't support the IME features. They have strayed away from that with Blood Diamond and 300 and released HD DVD versions with more features than the Blu-ray versions. But, maybe they are back to wanting parity. If that is the case, there should be some nice extras on Harry Potter 5 that can't be done with Blu-ray.
The Doctor 08-28-07, 09:33 PM Their Ten Top-selling High-Def Discs Since Inception is incorrect, so why not the rest of it.
It would be strange slip of the tongue. If it tuns out to be true somebody can claim they read the tea leaves :)
philnerd 08-28-07, 09:34 PM Even if profile 1.1 is completed on Oct 31, how long before 1.1 players are released? And if they DO get released, what will be the prices and adoption? Honestly, if a large base of PiP capable players were anticipated to be INSTALLED during December, then Disney would not have used the fake PiP on the upcoming Cars disc.
I'm pretty sure that Warner understands that the majority of BD owners during the holiday will not be PiP ready. If they're not willing to compromise on the HP series with a stripped down version (ie Matrix), then it will of course be HD DVD exclusive.
I've got no interest in these films, but I can only imagine how good their release will be for HD DVD.
Slim GoodBooty 08-28-07, 10:07 PM Warner has continually stated the importance of features on these types of discs and has been holding back catalog titles from BD because of it. Ask yourself...where is the announcement for The Matrix, and others that are out on HDDVD fpr BD?
eapleitez 08-28-07, 10:21 PM Imagine this scenario: Profile 1.1 delayed to 2008, Warner once again decides to go forward only with the HD DVD release. For all intents and purposes, HP would be exclusive to HD DVD this holiday season. That would be monumental, especially if they can advertise it like crazy.

Even Warner will eventually tire of this.
Yes id imagine warrner will either put out movie only BDs pre BD-J updates. Or not at all. Which seems to be the case. But like said if they don't get going then WB may go HD-DVD only. Atleast until everything is up and running..

Doesn't seem like an editorial mistake. They have a separate list filled with Warner movies on both formats.
Mabye hd dvd camp paid for this , which being unable to get all of warners exclusive is the next best thing , this is easily one of their biggest series to get exclusive , unlike the matrix its still an on going series and many will want to buy 1-5 before 6 comes out next fall and why not see them in hihg def ? Also since movie 5 and book 7 came out this year it still has a crap load of hype driving it
e_professor 08-29-07, 08:14 AM Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is already available on HD DVD in UK, Germany, France and parts of Europe, not so on Blu-ray.
It is possible that Warner could have decided not to go ahead with the Blu-ray version until there are enough players supporting the BD-J 1.1 profile before releasing an Blu-ray edition similar to the HD DVD.
Looking at it another way, Warner could have wanted to avoid the situation where both HD DVD and Blu-ray versions have great disparities (P-in-P video commentary and web-enabled features only on HD DVD), thereby increase publicity within the Harry Potter community to embrace HD DVD instead of Blu-ray. The price of HD DVD players just makes the format even more enticing to buy into...
Warner did earlier mentioned that Harry Potter boxset will be available on both HD DVD and Blu-ray... but it could have been HD DVD now and Blu-ray later?
I think wanner was/ is planing on both formats. But at that time they thought the new profile would be ready. But if it gets pushed to some time in 08. It very possible they could pull a matrix. Put the HD-DVD set out first and say blu-ray will come. But not have a date...
But prehapps they should just put out a bare bones blu-ray version. Like they do with some movies now. Although I think both the audio and video should be the same. TrueHD and VC-1,mpeg4 on both. Prehapps a LPCM track on BD. Although I don't think its needed. But being the room is their why not..
cobolisdead 08-29-07, 08:49 AM I can't wait for the boxset to come out here in the US.
Z07VETTE 08-29-07, 09:33 AM What about the 3rd Pirates movie? I didn't see that coming!!
TokyoShoe 08-29-07, 09:53 AM What about the 3rd Pirates movie? I didn't see that coming!!
Uhm, can you explain this comment Z07VETTE?
Jonto81 08-29-07, 10:34 AM Where can you get the import versions?
You could also try www.play.com I live in the UK and that is where I buy any HD DVD's not available on pacific DVD or Amazon.com (I don't use amazon.co.uk)
johnny15 08-29-07, 10:35 AM That would be great if it ended up getting pulled from the Blu-Ray line up. This would be another nice benefit for HD DVD. :)
I was reading that the DVD release date in the UK is November 12th for OotP and I would think the HD format would be released at the same time. why would they want to miss out on sales during the holiday season by releasing it weeks later.......

Uhm, can you explain this comment Z07VETTE?
Possibly a vague reference to Disney dropping Blu-ray?!
johnny15 08-29-07, 10:40 AM What about the 3rd Pirates movie? I didn't see that coming!!
Uhm, can you explain this comment Z07VETTE?
probably referring to not seeing it in the list of movie release dates, but it's clearly listed for Dec. 4..........
Z07VETTE 08-29-07, 04:07 PM I thought I saw it under HD DVD releases.
DrumAllDay 08-29-07, 04:30 PM I thought I saw it under HD DVD releases.
Definitely not. Disney is absolutely blu for the foreseeable future.
If you saw that somewhere, it was a misprint.
TokyoShoe 08-29-07, 04:30 PM Ah ok. Clear as mud, thanks! ;)
I emailed USA Today to ask about this, and I just got this response:
"Warner Home Video has not announced its plans for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I honestly cannot tell you why I put it in that category except that in my interviews the previous week with Paramount and Dreamworks they both mentioned it coming out and that stuck in my mind.
We should have a correction running tomorrow and the story on the website is being corrected."
mikesnider 08-29-07, 05:57 PM Ha, you beat me to it. I wanted to apologize for causing the commotion. As I said, I'm not certain why I left Order of the Phoenix in the HD DVD only list except that subconsciously Paramount and Dreamworks folks both mentioned it last week.
My bad!
Thanks for reading.

Nice. TBH, I more curious about the potential Blu-ray Java features and whether any player out there will be able to use them and how people will react! :D

From July >>> Not current at all. Heck, BR was getting Blades 2 weeks ago.
$149 for the frickin' series. Screw that. I might get one or two. They are all the same movie anyways. Once you've seen one, you've seen all.

Eh, I dunno, not bad for MSRP. With Amazon's standard discount it should come out to around $100 shipped, which is $20 per movie and is basically as good as you can expect for a new HD release. Add in Amazon's 10% discount that most of us have and it only gets cheaper.
